2 Introduction This programme aims to provide systematic in-service training for practitioners in shipping and logistics industries. The course provides a solid foundation that prepares participants for their future career advancement and enhances their expertise in the field of shipping and logistics. This programme is aimed to respond to Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE) of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Hong Kong (CILT). Industry Highlight According to the Summary Statistics on Port Traffic of Hong Kong, July 2012, Hong Kong ranked the 3rd container ports in the world. It handled 24.4 million TEUs of containers in The port provided about 440 container liner services per week connecting to about 500 destinations worldwide. By the country of domicile, Hong Kong fleet of ships over 1,000gt as of 1st Jan 2012 was 766 ships of 42.4 million deadweight, which put Hong Kong in the position of being the world s 7th largest country of domicile (2011, 8th), according to the Year Book of of Hong Kong Shipowners Association. Furthermore, Hong Kong was the 4th largest Ship Register in terms of Gross Tonnage and Deadweight of vessels of over 300gt in Jan The deadweight of ships flying Hong Kong flag also represented 7.7% of the world total. Hong Kong is undoubtedly a pre-eminent maritime center with sizable shipping-related companies that provide a wide range of services such as ship registration, ship finance, ship broking, ship sale and purchase, marine insurance, port and liner agency, ship management, arbitration, mediation, logistics and multi-modal transport. Moreover, Hong Kong is at a strategic location in Pan-Pearl River Delta (PRD) so the substantial growth of maritime activities will be supported by the China s rapid and strong economic growth, a demand for experienced and qualified shipping professional will be created in the foreseeable future. 3 Intended Learning Outcome After studying this programme, students are able to: problems and solving disputes by ways of negotiation and other dispute resolution methods. Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in Hong Kong (CILT). Programme Curriculum This programme comprises 8 modules. Each module consists of 39 contact hours. It is conducted in Chinese supplemented with English. Course materials and assessment will be in English. Students completed Part 1 of the Professional Diploma in Shipping & Logistics Management can be awarded the Certificate in Sea Transport ( ) before proceeding to Part 2 of the programme. 4 Professional Diploma in Shipping & Logistics Management Module Descriptor Part 1 General Shipping Practices This module aims to provide students with an appreciation of types of ship, types of cargo gear, types of cargo & trade routes. Additionally this module builds up the knowledge on shipping contracts, documentations and ship s costs for continuous learning in relating subjects. Ship Operations and Management This module aims to provide students with an appreciation of strategies that influence and determine the operations and management of fleets. Economics of Sea Transport and Liner Trades This module provides students with concepts in economics and how these might be applied to sea transport. It also aims to enhance their knowledge in Liner Shipping industry including social, economic, trading practice and environmental issues. Law of Business and Carriage This subject gives an introduction to the basic business and carriage law. It aims to enhance student knowledge in two main general legal principles of business law, namely negligence and contract, the law of carriage of goods by air and sea and their associated international conventions, insurance and arbitration an alternative dispute resolution method that is getting more and more important in the transport and shipping industry. It is the intention that knowledge of the general concepts and understanding of the associated legal principles and applications are sufficient to meet the expectation of this subject. Part 2 Marine Insurance This module aims to introduce the practical legal knowledge in marine insurance law and also the legal method to resolve legal problems. Ship Sale and Purchase & Shipping Finance This module aims to provide students with knowledge of a broad range of concepts and methods in financial management and ship sale and purchase to develop skills in applying these to decision-making in shipping.

5 Progression Pathway Professional Recognition Graduates of Professional Diploma in Shipping and Logistics Management shall be granted the provisional partial exemption of 3 Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILT). 1) OL1 Business Environment for Transport and Logistics 2) AL1 Law of Business and Carriage 3) AL3 Transport System and Management Website: Admission Requirements exemption from the above requirements. 6 Fees Application fee: HK$140 (to be paid at the time of application) Tuition fee: HK$21,840, payable in 2 instalments 1st instalment: HK$10,920 (payable upon admission) 2nd instalment: HK$10,920 (payable before 2014) In the case of re-assessment, additional fees will be charged. All fee paid are non-refundable. Financial Assistance Education Loan Successful applicants are eligible to apply for the Non-means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS) administered by the Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) of the HKSAR government. The maximum financial assistance under the NLS is equivalent to the total tuition fees payable for the programme.
