2 tab overview ti- First drive by Horizon Hobby National champ on its first try! By RC CaR action Staff PHOTOS By Hope McCall The Turn of The millennium brought with it some radical changes in the RC industry, as emerging technology and a new wave of mainstream manufacturers forever changed the landscape of the hobby both in the backyard and on the racetrack. By the mid-2000s, nitro racing had taken the country by storm and the 1/8-scale buggy class, which was once the fringe division in the U.S. behind 1/10-scale 2WD stadium trucks, became the pinnacle of radio control competition. TLR (known then as Team Losi) was the first U.S. manufacturer to hit the scene with the release of the original 8IGHT buggy at the end of 2006, and they were rewarded with dozens of industry accolades, widespread media praise, and the ultimate prize the 2007 ROAR National Championship in the hands of superstar Adam Drake. The sheer success of TLR s first-class entry left the rest of the market to play catch-up, and the pace hasn t slowed down in the half-decade since. The 8IGHT didn t slow down either and TLR s race team continued to refine the 8IGHT platform by releasing the 8IGHT 2.0. Their drivers kept winning as well repeating as National Champions in 2008, 2009, and Leading up to the 2012 IFMAR World Championships in Argentina amid a sea of new chassis from opposing manufacturers in an increasingly competitive environment, TLR went back to the drawing board for a third incarnation of America s best buggy to kick off the 2013 season which, again, won a ROAR National Championship. We were the first to put the TLR 8IGHT 3.0 through its paces, and this is what we thought. 5 product/brand awareness campaigns FIRST DRIVE t s very easy to make a case for Team Losi Racing being one of the key innovators in RC, especially after you see its allnew 1/10-scale 2WD racing buggy, the 22. TLR got its start in 1/10-scale 2WD buggy racing when it tore open the box of innovation with the JRX Pro. Fast-forward to today and TLR has done it again. Losi didn t carry anything over from its previous XXX-CR racer. The 22 s platform is all new from the ground up; with an all-aluminum 2.5mm 7075 chassis and large 12mm threaded-body shocks, this ride is two buggies in one. You can run the 22 conventionally as a rear-motor car, or with the included parts in a mid-motor configuration. There is a lot more to TLR s latest racer, and we expose it right here for the very first time! 56 MORE FROM THIS ISSUE AT RCCARACTION.COM BY JASON SAMS PHOTOS BY JASON SAMS & HOPE MCCALL Price: $ (may vary with dealer) Wheelbase: mm Width: 9.9 in. He finished third at the Cactus Classic, second at the Midwest Electric Championships, and put his tuck on top of the podium at Motorama this year. Ryan was kind enough to sit down with me and share his maintenance routine on his SC10. Anyone who has had the chance to see Ryan drive his short course truck around the track knows how fast these things can go and still take a beating in the hands of one of the best in the world. Even though these trucks can take abuse with ease, maintaining your short course truck is a key to making it up on the podium. WORDS AND PHOTOS BY BRENT FIEGE RYAN S PROGRAM PRE-RACE Ryan has two different routines for maintenance. He gives his truck quite a bit of attention both in the pits and at home in his garage. There are two different types of maintenance schedules that he follows meticulously. They vary from each other but both are equally as important to keeping his truck handling properly and most importantly, finishing the race. 1 Before heading up to the driver s stand for practice, Ryan will go over two of the most basic but extremely important parts of his setup, the slipper clutch and ride height. His choice ride height on the SC10 is 31mm front and 28mm rear. Ryan always has an Upgrade RC setup board in his pits and checks the front ride height on the flat part of the chassis just behind the front kick-up. The rear is measured in the middle of the plate where the transmission case pops through. RC SHORT COURSE PERFORMANCE ht_maintenancev2.indd 79 7/14/11 5:55 PM
