5 What is SMA? About SMA SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) is a degenerative neuromuscular disease that robs people of strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants. There is no cure and no treatment but we are asking you to help us change that. By sponsoring this event, you are helping us to spread awareness about the disease and to take another step towards eradicating it. Cure SMA Cure SMA is non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is working to fund the research necessary to develop a treatment and cure for our children. Since 1984, Cure SMA has directed and invested in comprehensive research that has shaped the scientific community s understanding of SMA. We are currently on the verge of breakthroughs in treatment that will strengthen our children s bodies, extend life, and lead to a cure. We have deep expertise in every aspect of SMA from the day-to-day realities to the nuances of care options and until we have a cure, we ll do everything we can to support children and families affected by the disease. Facts about SMA Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) courtesy of Cure SMA ( When two carriers have a child, there is a 25% chance that the child will be unaffected, a 50% chance that the child will also be a carrier, and a 25% chance that the child will have SMA. SMA affects approximately 1 in 10,000 babies, and about 1 in every 50 Americans is a genetic carrier. There are four primary types of SMA I, II, III, and IV based on age of onset and highest physical milestone achieved. Individuals with SMA have difficulty performing the basic functions of life, like breathing and swallowing. However, SMA does not affect a person s ability to think, learn, and build relationships with others. SMA is the #1 genetic cause of death for infants.
