2 Appeal Dear Friends, We cannot have ecology movement designed to prevent violence against nature, unless the principles of non-violence become central to the ethics of human culture. Mahatma Gandhi What is the meaning of "Smart City"? I am sure when the news of the Central Government's vision to set up 100 Smart Cities across the country" was announced, like me, many people had the same thought. Looking at the conditions prevailing in many cities in India, it is going to be a very difficult task before all of us. As the saying goes, It is never too late" or better late than never". I immediately went into action and searching on the Net, I came across many definitions, articles explaining its various meanings. The one I liked was, "A city equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions". (Times of India - May 2, 2015). In this definition, what impressed me more are the two words "Sustainable Environment". However in one other definition, concern towards resource consumption" is also cited. For more than two decades, Indian Concrete Institute, Pune Centre has organized an Annual Mega event "CEMCON", a conference on variety of topics related to construction activities. Recognizing the importance of Sustain ability as the need of the day, ICI PC organizing committee has chosen the theme, "Sustainable Materials and Technologies" for this year's "CEMCON 2015". As usual, we are getting a fabulous response from many technocrats from Industry and eminent authors, sending their technical papers for this two day event, here in Pune. I personally, on behalf of organizing committee members, would like to invite all concerned Builders, Structural Engineers, Architects, Contractors, Construction Managers, Manufacturers of Advanced Sustainable Materials and Technologies, Private and Government Organizations to associate with this Mega Event. You can patronize us by sponsoring events, deputing delegates as audience as well as for presenting your products, or by advertising in the Technical Volume. We hope to see you at the conference and share your valuable experience to make construction truly sustainable. Thanks, Suresh S. Athavale Architect, Chairman, Organizing Committee CEMCON 2015.
