1 The Inter School Competition on Consumer Awareness 12 October, 2015 An Inter School Competition on Consumer Awareness, Consumer Convention was organised by the Centre for Consumer Studies, the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi in collaboration with the Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidhlaya (R.P.V.V.), Thyagraj Nagar, Lodi Road New Delhi on 12th October, The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, sponsored the competition. 40 students in Junior category and 43 students in Senior category from different Delhi schools participated in the Poster Making and Slogan Writing Competition,with two students from each school (one junior level i.e. VII, VIII, IX and one senior level i.e. X, XI, XII). The competition included Poster Making Competition (Splash of Colours) on Consumer Awareness. The objective of the competition was to create awareness among the students in the area of consumer rights, duties and responsibilities of consumers and role of individuals as consumers in the society. It was an effort to make students understand the role and importance of Consumer Protection and motivate them to come forward to give an outreach to the consumer movement. The Poster Making Competition was organized for two level of students i.e. Group A Junior level (classes VII, VIII, IX) and Group B- Senior level (classes X, XI, XII). The themes assigned to the groups were Junior Group Jago Grahak Jago and Consumer Rights whereas the topics for seniors were Misleading Advertisements and Swatchh Bharat. The time duration for the competition was one hour and one participant from each group had to make a poster with an appropriate slogan. The programme started with a floral welcome of the Chief Guest and the judges followed by lighting of the lamp. The Chief Guest for the function was Ms. Bharti Das, CCA and JS, Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. Prof. Suresh Misra, Chair Professor and Coordinator, Centre for Consumer Studies, IIPA and Shri G.N. Sreekumaran, Consultant,SCHKRMP,CCS,IIPA were the Guests of Honour. The other dignitaries who graced the occasion were Dr Premlata, former Member DCDRF and sector Expert NCH, IIPA, New Delhi, Dr Sheetal Kapoor, Associate Professor, Kamla Nehru College, New Delhi,

Mrs Sunita Sharma, Vice Principal, R.P.V.V, Thyagrajnagar, New Delhi gave the Welcome Address and thanked IIPA for trusting and believing the School. Ms Bharti Das,CCA & Joint Secretary, DCA,GoI in her Inaugural Address said that inspite of the enactment of the Act, the consumers are still victims of many unscrupulous practices like adulteration, short weights and measures, dubious hire purchase agreements, etc. Misleading advertisements, cyber crimes, plastic money frauds, are some of the challenges which consumers face in the present scenario. She said that our Consumer Protection Act remains one of the best pieces of legislation in the world. The objective of CPA is to provide better protection of consumer rights and interests and for the same it provides for the setting up of quasi judicial bodies at three levels. She stressed that it is our duty to ensure that the consumer gets justice in time bound manner to keep his faith in the system. She said programmes like this are good initiatives to engrain the spirit of consumer awareness in the young minds. Prof. Suresh Misra addressing the participants Ms Bharti Das delivering the Inaugural Address Prof. Suresh Misra, Chair Professor and Coordinator, Centre for Consumer Studies while addressing the participants said that the Centre has been trying to involve each segment of the society in the consumer movement and it is by medium of this programme that we are trying to involve students in the consumer movement as they are the torch bearers of future. Stressing on the importance of consumer rights he emphasized that consumers should not only focus on their rights but also try and think about consumer responsibilities which are equally important. He said that 2

3 information enhances our awareness and knowledge of our rights and responsibilities. Therefore, more and more such awareness programmes should be organized to inculcate the consumer awareness among children. Shri G.N. Srekumaran, addressing the participant Sh. G. N. Sreekumaran, Consultant, SCHKRMP, IIPA in his address said that in order to protect the consumers from any kind of harassment it is necessary that they must be educated and made aware about the Act and redressal mechanism under the Act. He stressed that the need of the hour is to sensitize the consumers especially children and also make awareness campaigns especially in rural areas to make the people understand their rights and the manner in which it can be exercised. Dr. Mamta Pathania, Assistant Professor Public Administration, CCS, IIPA, New Delhi while addressing the participants highlighted that consumer safety is an aspect which needs to be given due attention and especially children should take due care of safety instructions on products while purchasing and using products. She said that armed with information, consumers can make good choices and wise decisions. One should not fall victim of the false claims made by certain advertisements which target young children and thus lure them to buy different products. She stressed that translating education and awareness into action is what is required to be done and for motivating students to be a part of this movement, such programmes play an important role. The students of class VI and VII presented folk dances and other cultural programmes for the assembled guests. The students of Class X, highlighting the need for girl education and also the ills that creep in when the girls are denied education, presented a small play on Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao. Giving wings to their imagination and colour to their thoughts, the participating students made beautiful posters and also gave apt slogans to them. Dr. Mamta Pathania addressing the participants 3

5 The prizes and certificates were given to 3 students from Junior Group and 3 from Senior Group. Two consolation prizes in both the categories that is junior and Some winning Moments senior level were also given. However, certificates and mementos were awarded to all the participants. One poster was chosen for getting it printed as a New Year Card by the Centre for Consumer Studies, IIPA. Out of the total posters, some posters were selected by the Centre for Consumer studies for getting them printed with the students name and school for the next year s calendar. The calendar thus printed was released on the National Consumer Day, 22 nd December, 2015 by the Honourable Minister of Consumer Affairs, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan.The programme ended with a Vote of thanks by Mr. Yadvendra Shukla, R.P V.V, New Delhi. 5
