There is compellig evidece to suggest that law eforcemet agecies eed to ehace their traiig o iteractios with persos affected by metal illess. Research coducted by the Washigto Post ad the Treatmet Advocacy Ceter (TAC) highlight how ofte the iteractios betwee persos affected by metal illess ad the police ca lead to ijury or fatality. Metal Health First Aid (MHFA) is a eight-hour course focused o metal illesses ad addictios as well as providig law eforcemet with effective respose optios i order to de-escalate icidets without compromisig safety. 4 THE ONE MIND CAMPAIGN The Oe Mid Campaig seeks to esure successful iteractios betwee police officers ad persos affected by metal illess. To joi the campaig, law eforcemet agecies commit to implemetig four promisig practices over a moth timeframe. Agecies demostratig a serious commitmet to implemetig all four required strategies i a timely fashio will become publicly recogized members of IACP s Oe Mid Campaig. Four Required Practices: 1. ESTABLISH a clearly defied ad sustaiable relatioship with at least oe commuity metal health orgaizatio. This partership will serve to istitutioalize effective collaboratio betwee the police agecy ad the metal health commuity. Where appropriate, a Memoradum of Uderstadig ca be crafted. 2. DEVELOP ad implemet a writte policy addressig law eforcemet respose to persos affected by metal illess. A writte policy esures that the departmet is takig a holistic approach ad settig miimum stadards for ecessary traiig, officer respose, ad evaluatio of outcomes. 3. DEMONSTRATE that 100 percet of swor officers (ad selected o-swor staff, such as dispatchers) are traied ad certified i MHFA. Officers who have take this eight hour course are able to employ a variety of de-escalatio ad commuicatio techiques to reduce the likelihood of a ufavorable outcome. 4. DEMONSTRATE that a miimum of 20 percet of all swor officers (ad selected o-swor staff, such as dispatchers) are traied ad certified i CIT. This comprehesive course uses a team approach, which coects officers with metal health professioals durig a law eforcemet respose. Beyod the four campaig strategies, there are multiple approaches that hold promise as well. Parter with a state associatio of chiefs or sheriffs to adopt a statewide model. Effectively utilize techology to ehace awareess of commuity metal health services. Take a leadership role with City/Couty/State govermet i supportig the establishmet of a metal health court. Implemet routie diversity ad cultural awareess traiigs, focused o where culture or laguage barriers make effective respose more difficult.
