As one of the nation's oldest college newspapers, the award-winning Tech has been serving the MIT community since The Tech was honored in 1994 as the winner of the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT's most prestigious award for service to the Institute. Each Tuesday and Friday morning, The Tech is distributed free to nearly 60 campus locations. More than 15,000 students, faculty, and staff turn to The Tech for campus news and events, coverage of worldwide news from The New York Times and The Boston Globe, crossword puzzles, comics, and more. In addition, The Tech brings MIT home to countless parents and alumni. As the campus' primary and largest newspaper, readers depend on The Tech for information about job openings, concerts and theater events, places to shop and dine, and much more. Hundreds of advertisers, from Fortune 500 companies to local retailers and restaurants, have consistently found The Tech to be a reliable and cost-effective way to reach the thousands of members of the MIT community. We publish daily during Orientation at the end of August, weekly during January, and monthly over the summer. In all, there are approximately 70 issues per year. A study by students of the MIT Sloan School of Management shows that The Tech's average readership is 15,000 per issue.

Orientation is the best time to make a first impression upon new students as freshmen and new graduate students will form the consumption habits they will maintain for several years during this period. During Orientation, The Tech will print a complete listing of planned campus and social events, making the newspaper a necessity for freshmen and upperclassmen alike. Career Fair Guides MIT hosts a number of career fairs throughout the academic school year; the first will be held on September 21. The Tech will feature the Career Fair in its Tuesday, September 19 issue, and may publish a students' guide to the Career Fair as a pullout. In the past the guide has been distributed on newsstands on the day of the Career Fair as well. Family Weekend Family Weekend is a time for MIT families to discover MIT and all that the Institute has to offer. Family Weekend 2005 brought 753 familes and 2,428 people to campus. Each year, Family Weekend provides families the opportunity to interact with faculty and administrators to experience MIT culture first hand. This year's Family Weekend is being held from October The Tech will publish on October 13. Independent Activities Period Between MIT's fall and spring semesters is the Independent Activities Period. The Tech will publish on Wednesdays during January. Starting on January 8 and running until February 2, 2007, IAP is a time for students to explore interests that do not necessarily have an academic focus. They can take classes ranging from Japanese to Pottery Making, explore Boston, or take advantage of many other exciting opportunities. Regardless of what students choose to do, IAP is a period when students have the most free time to explore Cambridge and Boston. The Year in Review Our February 6 issue will include the Year in Review, a look back at the events of The Year in Review is also sent to all incoming freshmen and graduate students in the summer. Spring Break MIT's spring break, March 26-30, occurs at the midpoint of our spring semester. Spring Break is a great time for students to escape the rigors and surroundings of MIT by traveling, spending money, and relaxing. Our last issue before Spring Break is March 23. Campus Preview Weekend MIT's Campus Preview Weekend is an opportunity for newly admitted students to visit campus and experience MIT first-hand. Many of these students are accompanied by their parents. This year's CPW will be held from April The Tech will print on April 13. Commencement June 8 is the date for our full-color Commencement issue. This issue is a great keepsake for over 2,000 graduates and their families. The Commencement issue is also sent to all incoming students in the summer.

3 Advertisement Rates and Information Local Open Rate $10.50/column-inch High Frequency Discount The local rate applies to all local (Cambridge and Boston area) advertisers other than Massachusetts Institute of Technology. National Open Rate $15.00/column-inch The national rate applies to all national (non-local) advertisers. These are commissionable only to recognized agencies. Non-Profit Open Rate $9.50/column-inch The non-profit rate applies to all federally recognized non-profit organization with the proper federal ID number. Any advertisement placed 10 or more times within the same academic semester is eligible to receive a 10% total discount, after applying appropriate rates and surcharges. Advertising agencies are excluded. All publication dates need to be specified ahead of time, at once, for discount to apply. Spot Color Color is available for all advertisements. The advertiser may specify the desired color for a charge of $200 per color. This charge is the same for ads of any size and applies to advertisements of two to three colors. Four or more colors qualifies as a full color ad and will be billed accordingly. Recruiter Open Rate $18.00/column-inch The recruiter rate applies to all advertisements dealing with recruitment, info sessions, and interviews. Full Color Full color advertisements are available at a cost of $550 per advertisement. For full color ads, the advertiser should provide a digital file and/or color separations to avoid additional charges. Insert Rate $500/1000 inserts The insert rate is per 1,000 inserts, per 8.5''x11'' sheet. An additional $50 is applied per extra sheet. The same insert rate applies to all types of advertisers. The Tech's circulation is 8,000 per issue. Guaranteed Placement Guaranteed placement is available for a 25% surcharge on a first-come, first-served basis on all pages except the front page, page 2, and the editorial pages (4-5). Institute Rates The Institute rates are available only to Massachusetts Institute of Technology departments, clubs, organizations and individuals. Late Fee Advertisements submitted or altered after the deadline are subject to a $3/column-inch late fee. 4 Advertisement Sizes and Information Paper Size The Tech is a tabloid, folded in quarters, printed on 30- pound, 34-inch recycled newsprint on an offset press at Charles River Publishing, Charlestown, Mass. The active image area is 10 inches wide and 16 inches tall. The page is divided into 5 columns, each two inches wide. Advertisement Size Sizes are expressed as the number of columns wide by the number of inches tall. Each column is 2 inches wide (i.e. a 1x2 advertisement is 2 inches wide by 2 inches tall). Multiplying columns by inches gives the total number of column inches (i.e. 1 x 2 = 2 column-inches). Multiplying column-inches by the advertisement rate gives the cost of an advertisement. Any size advertisement can be created using the following rules: Widths are in even number of inches (full columns). Heights are in full integers. Deadlines All copy must be received by 4:30 P.M. on Friday for Tuesday publication, and by 4:30 P.M. on Tuesday for Friday publication All advertisements must be accompanied by an including size, run date(s), billing information, and contact information. Common Sizes Sample sizes as they appear on the page are shown below. Although many advertisement sizes are available, some of the most common sizes are: Eighth-Page: 4 wide (2 col.) x 5 tall Quarter-Page: 6 wide (3 col.) x 8 tall vertical or 8 wide (4 col.) x 6 tall horizontal Half-Page: 10 wide (5 col.) x 8 tall Full-Page: 10 wide (5 col.) x 16 tall Submission Specifications Digital advertisements are the preferred form of submission. Our address for submission of advertisements is ads@tt.mit.edu. The favored forms of submission are PDF (Acrobat) files. However, The Tech also accepts files in TIFF, EPS, and JPEG formats. If you are submitting a file in PDF format, you must make sure all fonts are embedded when the PDF is created. If you are submitting a file in any other format, all font suitcase files must be included. It is also important to include all fonts embedded in vector EPS files and PDF files that are used in the advertisement. All images should be saved as TIFF or EPS files. The linescreen of raster images (such as photographs) should be 120 lpi, and the resolution should be more than 200 dpi. All color advertisements are printed using the four process CMYK colors. 5 Policies Cancellations Display advertising canceled after deadline may, at the discretion of the Advertising Manager, be subject to full charge. Canceled advertisements also may be subject to a nominal service charge to cover composition and handling costs. Deadlines Copy deadlines are on a Tuesday-Friday system. All copy must be received by 4:30 p.m. (EST/EDT) on Friday for Tuesday publication, and by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday for Friday publication. All advertisements must be accompanied by an including size, run date(s), billing information, and contact information. Editorial Rights No conditions, printed or otherwise, that conflict with the The Tech's policies will be binding on The Tech. All advertising is subject to acceptance by The Tech, which reserves the right to reject copy at its sole discretion. All advertisements must be clearly identified by a trademark, or the words "Advertisement paid for by [advertiser]" shall be added. All advertisements designed by The Tech are the property of The Tech and may not be reprinted without permission. Errors The Tech assumes no financial responsibility for typographical errors in advertisements but will correct and reprint any advertisement whose value has been affected by such errors. All corrections must be received three business days before the next insertion or the advertisement will be subject to a late fee. The Tech will make all reasonable efforts to see that advertising is published as accepted, but The Tech will not be responsible for any consequential damages resulting from failure to do so. The Tech reserves the right to revise its advertising rates and other specifications set forth in this ratecard at any time without prior notice. Tearsheets Tearsheets are mailed on request within one week of publiation. Requests for additional tearsheets may incur a surcharge. Billing The Tech reserves the right at any time to request payment in advance or to cancel credit privileges at any time. Invoices are mailed within a week of publication. Payment in full is due 30 days from the invoice date. If payment is not made in accordance with The Tech's credit terms, The Tech may refuse to insert any further advertisements. Late payment may be subject to a surcharge. Payment may be paid in check form or by credit card on our secure website. If an MIT department or student group, payment may be rendered through transfer of funds from accounts. ASA Groups All ASA-recognized student groups receive one half page of advertisement free of charge per semester in increments of quarter pages. Due to constraints in the layout of the paper, free advertisements may be subject to shrinking, postponement, or cancellation, but for the most part free student group advertisements run as originally placed. Color and typesetting surcharges are extra and are not covered by the free advertising service.
