MESSAGE FROM THE BOODSKAP VAN DIE PRESIDENT I am pleased to report that good progress was achieved in the implementation of the Society s strategic management plan during Details of the many actions that have been taken were reported in previous newsletters and at the July AGM. This edition of our newsletter also contains a number of articles dealing with more recent strategic actions implemented by the Portfolio Leaders. Looking back on what was achieved during the past year, two thoughts occurred to me which I would like to share with you. The first has to do with the quality of the Boran cattle offered on sales throughout the year although there are many criteria that create a successful sale, it was clear that the better prices realised were, to a large extent, achieved by sellers who offered high quality animals for sale. Although this may be an obvious fact, each breeder should remember that the opposite is also true: poor quality will result in a poor result. The second thought has to do with the way in which we conduct our business. In this regard I believe that it is worthwhile to reflect upon the five values that we included in the strategic management plan that was distributed to all breeders take a moment to measure yourself against our values. n Terugblik na wat bereik is gedurende die afgelope jaar, bring onwillikeurig twee gedagtes by my op, wat ek graag wil deel. 3

The values that we cherish and for which we would want to be known are: Dynamic policies and strategic management. Integrity, high standards and excellence in everything we do. Impeccable business principles and ethics. A common ethos amongst all our breeders. A respect for all other breeds. I would like to use this opportunity to acknowledge the involvement and effort on the part of a large number of very special people who all contributed to our success in 2015: Our progress during the year was due in no small part to the effort made by individual breeders who offered their comments and personal time in assisting with Society matters thank you all for the contribution that you made. The Boran Clubs around the country played a very important part in the promotion of our breed during 2015 to all of you, thank you for your effort. The foundation of our success lies in our office team to Chris, Hesther and Christine, your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated. Each of our Council members is accountable for the implementation of specific parts of our strategic plan my thanks go to each one of them for their dedication and ongoing effort. You can be proud of what was achieved in In closing, may I wish you and your family a peaceful and safe festive season, and a prosperous With best Boran greetings, Ed Koller Die waardes wat gekoester word en waarvoor ons geadmireer wil word, is: n Dinamiese beleid en strategiese bestuur Integriteit, hoë standaarde en uitmuntendheid in alles wat gedoen word.

Sparta Feedlots / Sparta Voerkrale Sparta Interim Report: The Boran Free State Club is at present participating in the Sparta Boran Cross study group conducted at their feedlot, situated in Marquard. The study group includes 81 Boran Cross weaners of which 5 bulls are F2 crosses. During the backgrouding phase these animals daily gain matched the averages of the feedlot but showed promising results with the feed conversion rate. It should be noted that the feed conversion rate is of vital importance as it optimises the profitability of the feedlot. During the feedlot stage the interim results of the average gained again was on par with the averages of Sparta. These weaners still need to complete their feedlot stage and upon completion we will be able to provide the final results. 7 What is GENOMICS? GENOMICS / GENOMIKA (UNKNOWN AUTHOR) Having the right type of cow for your system is essential to sustainable profitability from the suckler herd. Choosing the right animals to breed from is a key decision to ensure the best quality beef animals for slaughter or for keeping as replacements. The use of breeding indexes is an important tool to help farmers select bulls and cows for replacements. Superiority in genetic indexes for terminal and maternal indexes has been shown to reflect closely the differences in profitability seen on farm. While AI bulls often have indexes based on a lot of progeny, in many instances the information on traits like milk and fertility is a lot lower. When buying a stock bull or choosing replacement heifers, an animal s indexes are based primarily on the average of the parent s indexes and some performance data on the animals themselves. This may not be a very good guide to the future performance of the young animals. Since 2008, an extra source of information has been used to guide selection decisions in cattle. This extra source of information is using the DNA profile of the animal to assess if the animal has good, bad or average genes for each trait being evaluated. While the method has received widespread uptake and revolutionised dairy cattle breeding, it has taken longer for the technology to be utilised in beef. Genomic Selection is the general term applied to selecting bulls using DNA information. Moet asseblief nie hierdie sterthare in banksakkies verpak nie. Die plastiek kan die DNS beskadig. Plaas dit asseblief in PAPIER koeverte. Hierdie DNS sal by Stamboek geberg word.

Boran Groete Johan Erasmus

3. Die bondel kan dan direk in n koevert of banksakkie geplaas word, duidelik gemerk met die dier se oornommer/tag/id, en so versend word. 4. 19 SEMEN QUALITY IN STUD BULLS : 90% OF TESTED INFERTILITY IS OPERATORS FAULT MARIUS POTGIETER (ROOIKOP BORANE) ERRATA This article was published in the 2015 Journal and was incorrectly translated. The Boran Society apologises for this oversight. PLEASE FIND HEREWITH THE CORRECT TRANSLATION. BORAN NEWSLETTER / NUUSBRIEF Since 1985 it has been my full time occupation to collect and process semen in veld-conditions in every area of Southern Africa. (As a registered semen-collector I can say with confidence that the above remark is not farfetched at all.) Is it possible to prepare your bull to give good quality semen? This is definitely so! Many factors have an influence on semen quality. At birth a bull calf has no sperm production, sperm production only starts at puberty and from then on the bull produces billions of sperms. Literature confirms that as many as up to 13 billion sperm are produced every twentyfour hours!1 The heifer on the other hand is born with all the egg cell s that she will ever need in her life. Sperm production from start to finish varies between 57 to 74 days (depending on race and age) from spermatocyte stage to fully matured sperm ready for ejaculation. You can compare this process to that of a factory. Should something happen to the bull that has an influence on the sperm, all sperm could die, or only those in crucial stage of development. Thus, the percentage of normal sperm could decrease dramatically. There are cases where important elements for sperm production are absent. This can cause abnormal sperm production. If the internal body temperature of the bull is too high (having a fever) or the ambient temperature is too high (very warm day without shade protection) it can also affect the morphology of the sperm. Virile, healthy sperm can survive a temperature of more than 200c below body temperature, but will die at 3 degrees Celsius higher than body temperature. Influences that can effect sperm production are varied, but the most common are insufficient feeding, drastic changes in feeding, high fever, obesity, diseases, overworking, and high levels of stress. An underweight bull (for running with cows) often renders above average quality semen, as opposed to a fat bull (not with cows for a long period for one year or more) which could render lots of dead or old sperm. Most young bulls masturbate regularly and therefore seldom have a build-up of old semen. When a bull ejaculates the oldest semen is 19

released first (the morphology of old semen is also very poor and can be misleading with regard to the bulls true fertility status). External factors that could have an effect on semen quality are exposure to sunlight, high external temperatures and sudden temperature changes, semen mixed with urine, wind and chemicals. Thus sample collection and correct handling of the sample is of cardinal importance to get a true evaluation of fertility. If the semen collector is not adept with the ejaculator and familiar with the different reactions of various bulls to the electro-stimulation, it could be a very traumatic experience for the bull, the owner, and even the operator. If the collector is not familiar with the process the bull can have a semi- or interrupted ejaculate. Referring to this type of ejaculate, semen will lack important additives from sexual glands and will always have a poor and misleading morphological result. If the sheath is not cleaned properly before tapping, urine and impurities can be collected mixed with the semen that can also provide distorted and totally misleading results. The use of a cold pipette or microscope slide and the absence of a hot stage on the microscope may render inaccurate or false reading. (a phase-contrast microscope is absolutely essential). Chemical residues on apparatus will also negatively affect the semen quality. What can the farmer do to ensure that he only culls bulls that are truly infertile or sub-fertile? 1. Do not test a bull that was seriously ill in the past 3 months, even if the bull looks very healthy now. 2. Bear in mind that a bull must first adapt/acclimatize on a new farm environment before he could give a good semen sample. 3. Ensure that the person tasked to test your bull/s is well qualified and experienced to collect semen. 4. Use a person that has the necessary experience and qualification in handling of a semen sample and evaluating semen under the microscope. 5. Re-test should the first ejaculate not be good; insist on a second or even a third ejaculate. The semen quality of a normal fertile bull is not always constant. The ejaculates may vary. Do not cull the bull after the first poor test, the next sample could be better and further samples a few days or a week later can even be much better because there are many factors that can influence and kill sperm, it is produced and ejaculated in billions. In my experience, out of every ten ejaculates taken, an average of two and a half ejaculates are not suitable for making straws for the use in AI and are discarded at the kraal. For each ten lots of semen frozen, on average three do not comply with the minimum requirements for AI use. If you collect semen of a bull regularly, you could find ejaculates that are not up to standard although the fertility of the bull is already known! If semen is collected correctly but does not conform to the minimum requirements, re-test the bull at least once and in a few days again if necessary. He might just require one more chance to prove himself. Infertility has been discriminated against since the beginning of time (the bull or cow that did not produce progeny was eaten!) Thus today, we have only a small percentage (2 ½ - 5%) of infertile or semi-fertile animals. However, it is essential that the farmer must test his bulls regularly. References: 1. 21 A PICTURE OF PEACE There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest in perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? Because explained the King, peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace. Author Unknown 21

Counts The Man who It is not the critic who counts, Nor the man who points out How the STRONG man stumbled Or where the doer of the deed Could have done better THE CREDIT BELONGS TO THE MAN WHO IS ACTUALLY IN THE ARENA, Whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, Who strives valiantly, Who errs and comes short again and again, Because there is no effort without erring and short-coming. Who does actually strive to do the deeds, who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause, Who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, And who, at worst, if he fails, At least fails while daring greatly, So that his place shall never be with those Cold and timid souls Who knew neither victory nor defeat. 23 STRENGTH BORAN NEWSLETTER / NUUSBRIEF VS WEAKNESS The following is the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident. The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move. Sensei, the boy finally said, Shouldn t I be learning more moves? This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you ll ever need to know, the sensei replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training. Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. No, the sensei insisted, Let him continue. Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake; He dropped his guard and instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion. On the way home, the boy and the sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind. Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move? You won for two reasons, the sensei answered. First, you ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm. The boy s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength. Written by Joel Garfinkle 23
