The cost of housing, healthcare, childcare, food, and other basic needs are surpassing the income of too many families in our community. 13.5% of Polk County residents live below the federal poverty level making it difficult to meet their basic needs, including food and shelter. (United Way funds helped 30+ families with heating assistance through Tri-Valley's Reach Out For Warmth program last year.) 1 in 6 Americans struggle with hunger. (United Way funds helped provide 278,869 meals to 3,744 families in the Crookston area through the utilization of the North Country Food Shelf last year.) 40.1% of local students are eligible for free or reduced lunches. These same families struggle to meet the basic needs at home and teachers have seen students come to school Monday mornings famished because their last "good" meal was lunch on Friday. (United Way funds helped 80 children in the Crookston area receive food to bring home over the weekends through the Backpack Program which is funded through the North Country Food Bank.) WELLNESS United Way funded programs are helping improve people's health. This includes everything from mental health, nutritional health and supporting options for low-income individuals to access healthcare needs. (United Way funds helped area seniors receive nutritious and well-balanced meals at a reduced price and often in the convenience of their home through programs like Lutheran Social Services, Meals on Wheels and the Golden Link.) Concussions account for 13.2% of sports-related injuries and can lead to traumatic brain injury if not detected and treated immediately. (300+ student athletes receive free baseline concussion testing through RiverView's ImPACT program.) 1 in 6 children in the United States has a developmental disability, according to the CDC. (United Way funds helped developmentally disabled individuals have options for earning income, recreation and social interaction.) BUSINESS DONATIONS During the campaign, many area businesses and their employees step up to do a payroll deduct donation throughout the year. Towards the end of the campaign, a check is presented to the United Way of Crookston. There are currently 24 employers in the Crookston area that do payroll deduct. In fact, 48 percent of the campaign is through employer s payroll deduct donations. Here are eight good reasons why United Way is the best way: Local control - Crookston's volunteers set policies and make ALL decisions. Efficiency - Because of volunteers, United Way has the lowest overhead costs possible...this means that more of the donated dollar gets to the programs that help people in the Crookston area. Convenience - One yearly budgeted gift supports more than 24 human service agencies that serve our community. Fairness - United Way's request for financial support is based on the ABILITY TO GIVE... and ALL employed people in our area are asked to give. Stewardship - Donations are allocated wisely by one board which eliminates service duplications with your funds. Volunteers plan and coordinate effective ways to meet Crookston's human service needs and see opportunities for and encourage teamwork among partner agencies. Flexibility - Quickly responds to changing human service needs in Crookston. Accountability - Operates openly and reports fully to the people of Crookston. Unification - Brings people from all walks of life together in a cooperative effort to make our community a better place in which to live. Children who are not involved in after-school programs and extracirricular activities have a higher risk of dropping out of school. (United Way funds help kids receive scholarships from the Kids First program which allows for participation in Parks & Recreation activities in the community.) The mission of the United Way of Crookston is to improve the quality of life of Crookston area people by gathering and distributing, in an efficient manner, community resources that respond to priority health and human service needs. Their campaign runs from October through December during most years, but this year extended into January. After, they hold hearings with the board members and directors to decide how to split up the money between the organizations that apply.
