1 Apr. 20, 2017 vol. 248 New Study Claims Criminals can be Identified by Brain Scans 新研究宣稱腦部掃描能辨認罪行 Scientists have found evidence that people s brains show characteristic patterns of activity when they are knowingly breaking the law. They conducted computer-enhanced images from brain scans and found clear similarities in research subjects. This cannot prove criminals know what they re doing when they break the law, but may offer scientific support for the principle that the law should treat people with criminal intent more harshly than those who are simply careless. intend vt. May. 5, 2017 vol. 249 Best Picture Mix-Up at 2017 Oscars 2017 年奧斯卡最佳影片出錯 The 2017 Academy Award ended with a bizarre mix-up, when the movie La La Land was mistakenly given the Oscar for Best Picture. 6 II. Reading Comprehension Think Twice Before Buying Drinks with Ice It goes without saying that there are a lot of beverage stores in Taiwan, and during the hot summers, many people locals and tourists alike enjoy ordering iced drinks. A new report, however, may have many people changing their buying habits. According to a campaign carried out by Taipei s Department of Health, several iced products sold at different stores were found to contain excessive levels of harmful bacteria. The Department of Health ran tests on a number of products, including frozen drinks, iced products, and ice cubes. Altogether, 211 items were tested, and 56 of these items failed, due to unacceptable levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Even though stores were given the opportunity to make changes and improvements, 15 items were still unable to pass a second test. The stores selling drinks that failed to meet health standards ranged from chain tea shops to shavedice stores to fast-food restaurants, and included some of the city s most popular shops, such as WAIT, Ice Monster, Yifang Taiwan Fruit Tea, Rabbit Rabbit Tea, ITSO Tea, and T.K.K. Fried Chicken. Some of the stores claimed that new machines and filters had caused these problems, while others blamed the hot weather in Taipei and a failure by staff to follow proper sanitary procedures for cleaning and storing products. One tea shop promised to take apart and thoroughly clean all of its drink-making equipment. It also planned to double-check that its supplier was indeed providing the store with clean ice cubes. Many of these stores have also promised to set up new cleaning procedures, with frequent checks by management or owners to ensure cleanliness is being maintained. A few stores have even said that they will invest in new refrigeration equipment, and many stated that they will start testing their own products themselves, on a weekly or monthly basis. Despite these plans to make improvements in the future, the stores that were found to have products in violation of health regulations will still have to be fined. According to the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation, these businesses can be fined anywhere from NT$30,000 and NT$3 million, which shows just how seriously the government takes this matter. It can only be hoped that improvements will be made soon. After all, on a hot day in Taipei, most people want to enjoy an iced drink or some shaved ice without having to worry about any harmful levels of bacteria these items may contain. beverage 飲料 excessive 過度的 Escherichia coli/e. coli 大腸桿菌 filter 濾器 sanitary 衛生的 supplier 供應商 ensure 保證 Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation 食品安全衛生管理法 ( ) 1.
