1 LEFT NAMEPLATE RIGHT EAR EAR XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX This front page is a traditional design with stories arranged in interlocking doglegs and L-shapes. This is done to keep the eye flowing from the visual center of attention (the upper right) around the page. The lead story is positioned in the upper right hand corner to indicate its prominence. The positions of headlines interrupt the natural gutters formed by the columns to keep the eye moving from story to story. An unblocked gutter would allow the eye to run to the bottom of the page too quickly. Advertising usually does not appear at the bottom of the front page of a section. The declining economy has caused some newspapers to reject this tradition. An additional fee is charged for premium ut facilisis convallis, nulla placement on front pages. vulputate justo nunc non ipsum. Nunc elementum ipsum at lectus. Sed dolor. On these pages readers find editorials written by staff, citizen commentators, and syndicated writers. Letters to the editor, art and photos to compliment the writing, and cartoons are also found here. The masthead listing editorial staff (writers) usually appears on this page. A larger font is usually used. Advertising does not appear on this page. This is done to convey objectivity. Readers might assume any advertisement on the page an admission that certain advertisers controlled the content of the page as well as the rest of the paper. Bonus Points: Revise each of your stories using the format in the textbook. Receive two bonus points per story. Headlines set in larger, bold fonts in multiple columns indicate the most important stories as well as copy that is set in multiple columns. The advertising on this page is in a half-pyramid arrangement. If the opposite page carried advertisement in a mirroring arrangement, it would be called a pyramid. The stair steps this crates will allow copy to touch each ad and draw more attention. The advertising staff originates the dummy of the newspaper. This is the blueprint the composition staff follows to finish the pages. Advertising is dummied first since this is paid space. Advertising is sold by the column inch. The open rate for a major daily can be as much as $500 for a space one column wide and one inch high. After space is reserved for the ads, the stories are dummied into the remaining news hole. 4 Story A Photo Credit: Photo 1 ADVERTI Story B, Three The center fold of a newspaper is a natural spread with an exposed gutter that can carry advertising. Placement here usually carries an additional charge. An ad that bleeds across the gutter is called a double truck: it trucks from one side to the other. This type of ad is preferred by many advertisers because it dominates the page like a full-page ad, but it has the additional advantage of having copy on the same page to help draw attention, and it is less expensive since fewer column inches are billed. This design can be facing pages or a single page. Like the pyramid and half-pyramid, the juxtaposition of ads and copy increases the likelihood of exposure of the reader to the ads.
