INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 1 Demand for Digital Billboards and Displays Energizes Industry Recovery. Jose Simoes Post University Competitive Intelligence February 2013

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 2 Summary of Analysis Companies with robust digital product offerings will lead industry s recovery. Demand for digital billboards that can display several rotating ads thus increasing billboard revenue will increase. Industry revenue is expected to grow at an annual rate of 2.3% in the five years to (Sherman, 2012) The industry is mature as there is limited amount of billboard sites available due to highway regulations. Digital billboards offer the ability for billboard owners to sell multiple advertisement space on same billboard. Therefore, digital billboard manufacturers can charge high premium for this functionality. Companies with established digital product portfolios and manufacturing capabilities could gain substantial market share.

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 3 STEEP Variables For The Billboard and Sign Industry Social Technological Ecological Economic Political/Legal Advances in Environmental Economic Highway video display concerns over recovery Beautification and LED disposal of causes Act of 1965 technology large cathode increase in ray tube advertising Increase in highway traffic means higher value for billboard advertising Continuously increasing labor wages -highly labor intensive industry Ability of advertisers to target specific demographics Social concerns over outsourcing Internet and social media are absorbing increasing percentage of advertising dollars Development of GPS technology- ads can be changed based on location Intellectual Property displays Concerns over effects of visual pollution Preference for environmentally friendly products- print vs digital Power consumption and generation concerns expenditures Increasing corporate profits will raise demand for billboards and signage. Many cheaper advertising channels High national deficit / threat of higher business taxes State and Municipal regulations such as zoning codes Environmental and Labor Laws Low ability to influence lawmakers Increased demand for digital technology GDP expected to rise annual rate of 1.8% over next 5 years Low tariff level on imports

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 4 Social Variables Digital billboards allow advertisers to target different demographics. For example, eight different advertising messages can be loaded to billboard network computer that can then cycle the messages on every billboard connected to network. This allows advertisers to target different demographics according to time, day or location of billboard. Technological Variables Digital, Light-emitting diodes (LED) and liquid crystal displays (LCD) are growing in popularity and will be the focus of future innovation. Technological development in industry is at a moderate level. Some new technologies under development include GPS modems that instantly update billboards on buses and cars, LED billboards that use Bluetooth and infrared technology to display multiple messages and interactive billboards that can send messages directly to cell phones. Ecological Variables Environmental concerns over power consumption benefit companies using LED technology. Players in the LED industry have publicized the advantages of LEDs, especially their high electrical efficiency and long lifetime. (Gaughan, 2005) Those advantages have driven LEDs to be the solution of choice for many applications including digital billboards. Economic Variables Despite the recession, the number of digital displays has grown significantly because of their greater ability to generate revenue. Additionally, increasing corporate profits will raise demand for billboards and signage. Average industry profit accounted for 5.5% of revenue in The relatively low profit is primarily due to high level of

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 5 competition from domestic companies and pricing pressure from customers. The average industry profit margin is expected to reach 6.0% in the five to 2012, as demand for advertising improves and manufacturers have heightened pricing power. Political / Legal Variables Increased regulation will hamper industry growth. Outdoor advertising is subject to governmental regulation at the federal, state and local levels. Regulations generally restrict the size, spacing, lighting and other aspects of advertising structures. Federal law regulates outdoor advertising on Federal-Aid Primary, Interstate and National High Systems roads. While digital billboards have only recently been developed and introduced into the market on a large scale, they are already facing increased scrutiny and regulation due to some concerns over aesthetics and driver safety. (Sherman, 2012)

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 6 FIVE FORCES ANALYSIS Threat of New Entrants: Low production costs Substantial business development expense in the case of digital signs High distribution costs Industry in mature stage Rivalry Determinants: Industry in mature stage of life cycle Low competitor concentration Pricing based competition Power of Suppliers: Industry too small to exert pricing pressure Many different suppliers used High cost of purchases relative to total revenue Threat of Substitutes: Non-digital signage still broadly used Many cheaper advertising channels Increased internet and social media use Power of Buyers: Demand for billboard advertising has declined Billboard market is near full capacity Mature industry High number of industry operators

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 7 Threat of new entrants is low because of low competitor concentration. Four of the largest firms were estimated to have generated less than 9% of industry revenue in (Sherman, 2012) Barriers to entry are relatively low. It is fairly easy to start a small sign company serving a local market. However, the digital billboard and sign market requires significant investment in manufacturing capacity, business development, and a highly skilled workforce. Bargaining power of suppliers is low because of high number of suppliers available. Industry purchases account for about 45% of industry revenue, making them the largest expense in the industry. Companies within the industry tend to be too small to exert pricing power on suppliers. (Sherman, 2012) Consequently, billboard and sign manufacturers purchase materials from various sources and concentrate orders when pricing is advantageous. Bargaining power of buyers is high because of limited market size. The industry enhances existing products using digital technology but it does not create new markets. The industry is in its mature life cycle stage therefore the power shifts from the manufacturer to the buyer. High number of industry firms - 5,736 as of 2012 (Sherman, 2012) - gives buyers the power to choose among competing bids for best price. The threat of substitutes is high because of high number of alternative advertising channels. Competition from cheaper forms of advertising poses a challenge for billboard and sign manufacturers. An increasing percentage of advertising budgets are spent on internet marketing campaigns. (Farrel, 2012) Rivalry among existing competitors is low because of high cost of distribution. The cost of transporting heavy, bulky billboards, signage and advertising displays over long

INDUSTRY ANALYSIS 8 distances prevents most industry firms from developing a dominant national presence. Industry operators face mostly local competition and depend heavily on relationships with local customers. Conclusion Companies with digital display solutions can leverage the advertising demand for their product and facilitate the industry s recovery. Although market entry costs for traditional printed signage and competitor concentration are low, the investment needed for the development and manufacturing of digital displays is cost prohibitive to smallscale competitors. This will allow companies with established digital product portfolios and manufacturing capabilities to gain substantial market share. Forecast and/or Implications Despite the recession, the number of digital displays has grown significantly because of their greater ability to generate revenue. The increase in advertising spending projected for the next five years in conjunction with the technological advance in LED technology and GPS and message management demands investment in the development of a strong digital product portfolio. Failure to do so will result in loss of market share to major competitors with little opportunity to recover because of limited market size.
