2 Public Service Announcement: You will individually: Select a topic Research the topic Write and pitch proposal to your group In your groups you will: Write script Draw storyboards Shoot video (or act out in class) Present to class

3 Public Service Announcement: You will be scored on your individual and on your group assigned tasks. You will be provided with handouts to complete each portion and given explicit instructions on how to complete.

4 Definition: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Defined by the Federal Communications Commission as an unpaid announcement that promotes the programs of government or voluntary agencies or that serves the public interest. PSAs can be produced for television and radio broadcast. aba.org

5 Definition: PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Announcements that inform the public about safety and health information, community services or public affairs. Produced and programmed much like commercials, but usually not produced for profit. PBS.org

6 Advertisements are just like PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT In some ways, PSAs are a form of advertisement. The PSA is selling an idea instead of a product.

7 Public Service Announcement: This assignment will be viewed and scored by your peers and teachers from other classes. It will be used to show other classes how to complete this assignment in the future.

8 Public Service Announcement: This assignment is to be 30 to 60 seconds in length. This must be original. *You will receive a 0 if this is a copy of any other commercial or PSA.

27 Preproduction - Group Students pitch concept to group. Students vote on pitch and make changes if needed and create one concept as a group for submission. Groups will complete a prewriting packet* Your group will need to resubmit the following as one group: Topic: (must be approved as stated, cannot change) Actors/characters: (who will play parts?) Hook: (how is this original to other advertisements?) Facts: (how will you get this across to your audience?) Locations: (will you need to create a scene?)

28 Preproduction - Storyboards Students draw storyboards Students take turns drawing frames. Student initials the corner of the frame they drew. Storyboards are always done on national commercials and PSAs.

29 Production Students shoot projects in groups following the format of the pre-made storyboard Locations outside of school are more interesting The person handling the camera should give the actors direction on how to act and where to stand.

30 Post Production Edit/Practice your Project Everyone makes errors, but do not let your audience see this- Edit your filming. If you are good on the computer, you can use special effects and edit your PSA. Rehearse! If you are going to perform your PSA, make sure you practice so you will not have mistakes.

31 The Test Audience Your responsibilities as a viewer: Be respectful of other s ideas Be quiet and listen Look for details and examples of how the group addressed the different ways of persuasion. Always have something nice to say or do not say anything at all! If we want your opinion, we will give it to you.
