The festival was founded in 1996 by Maryland State Delegate and Speaker Pro-Tem, Adrienne Jones. The Festival celebrates the rich and thriving traditions of the African American community, brings together local and national recording artists and entertainers, small businesses, as well as Fortune 500 companies, to engage with thousands of attendees. The Festival continues to be a vibrant and exciting event that has become one of Baltimore County s proudest traditions. The event is free of charge for attendees, family-oriented and located on the streets surrounding the Towson Courthouse Plaza. Traditionally, the Festival is held on the third Saturday in the month of September. The festival serves as a vehicle to showcase Baltimore County s vibrant communities and its residents. It also serves as a means of raising funds to support charitable programs charged to the Festival Board, such as scholarships, summer camps, and historical preservation projects. 4 Our Mission The BCAACF is charged to Inspire, Preserve and Produce, bringing awareness to the rich African American culture in Baltimore County. Inspire We award scholarships annually to students perusing careers in Business, Science, Technology and the Arts. Students are selected from Baltimore County Public Schools who have displayed academic excellence and who are significantly involved in their communities. To date the festival has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships. No student will be denied access to the process because of race, sex or religion. Children of board members, will not be eligible. We also support programs that addresses community needs that inspire children and young adults and bring to life the dreams, creativity and innovation of the next generation. Preserve We are committed to the preservation of historical treasures in Baltimore County s African American communities. With more than forty (40) historic African American communities in the County, many of which predate the Civil War, funds will be used to restore buildings; excavate historic sites; publish books, pamphlets and other written material about the history of the communities; and present exhibits and forums to share this history with the general public. A panel that consists of BCAACF board members, local historians, and members of the business community help identify projects to be selected for funding.
