APINEC AGRO-INDUSTRY PLC Up-Scalling of a Honey Value Chain Through Provision of Ready Made Embossed wax Foundation Sheet and skill training in How to Construct Low cost Hives and seasonal Management of Bees

Background of your organization Forms of ownership: Private Limited Company Main business lines: export of bee products such as honey and beeswax and training Relation to smallholder farmers: Currently Apinec is closely working with 3200 women beekeepers in Amhara and South regions

Background of previous FSRE projects Type and size of fund secured from previous calls: Innovation: Strengthening a Honey Value Chain Through Provision of Ready Made Embossed Beeswax Foundation Sheet Euro 97,040 matching grant facilities: : Intensification of Honey Value Chain Through Training, Skill Development and Establishment of Beekeepers College Euro 40,000

Project rational/main purpose of projects One of the bottlenecks for low adoption of modern and intermediate hive technology is unaffordable and inaccessible inputs such as ready made beeswax foundation sheet. In this project it was planned to address the absence of a genuine ready made beeswax foundation sheet for the production of quality of honey and beeswax for modern hives, that is affordable and easily accessible to smallholder beekeepers.

Key achievements The average income of beekeepers increased from 5,262 to birr 7,893 The average productivity of honey per hive increased Transitional, from 16.5 kg to 18 kg Modern hive from 22.5 kg to 25 kg The moisture content of honey at farm gate decreased from 23% to 19.5 % Cost of beeswax reduced to 50%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apinec opened ATVET College in Bonga

Similarity of the projects Innovation and matching funds are different foundation sheet/innovation/ Apiculture College/matching/

Key challenges faced shortage of foreign currency in the country has a negative impact on the procurement of the machineries tax free privileged not on time machine suppliers were busy in installing machineries in several countries and were not willing to come to Ethiopia Shortage of time to test and disseminate the technology Working capital

Key lessons learnt A single innovation, by itself will not guarantee the ultimate sustainability and success of the project intervention. Direct Linkage created with out growers and the company in market and extension service provision has a win- win situation for both parties. Verification of technologies and demonstration by involving farmers will enhance the adoption of technologies

Key lesson learnt cont. technologies to be introduced to small holder farmers should be affordable, accessible and easy to undertake.

Description of the upscaling project Overall purpose/main business of the current project Introduction of ready made embossed wax foundation sheet, skill training in how to construct low cost hives 200 women beekeepers and 600 follower beekeepers under consideration will save time, money and increase their production both in quality and quantity.

Introduction of ready made beeswax foundation sheet and construction of low cost modern hives from locally available materials for 200 women beekeepers Organize field day for concerned stakeholders to disseminate the technology in potential honey producing areas of the country Market linkage with women beekeepers networking with finance institution and NGO s

Risks and Mitigation Strategies What are the main risks to the project? Please identify them and classify on two categories: how likely they are to occur and their potential impact. Then add mitigation strategies by your organisation or others. Distance Install the machine in central places /addis/dukem/sebeta/ Packing and transportation????????

Sustainability of the Upscaling project How do you assure the sustainability of your initiative / project? When the funding has been received, invested and then stops, how do you ensure that the activities will continue and that scale is reached? What mechanisms are put in place to allow this? Apinec already connected with banks to provide loan for its out growers for input purchase and receive their produce
