Sustainability at Coop Action, not words that is sustainability at Coop. Our c ommitment to people, animals and nature is summarized by these three words and by more than 350 actions. We ve been blazing a trail with our wide-ranging approach to sustainability for more than 20 years and work with our partners to encourage sustainable consumption. Find out more about the background and diversity of our commitment to sustainability at actions-not-words.ch. Sustainability is firmly rooted in our company and is practised by all our employees. As a cooperative, sustainability is an integral part of all our business activities and a key element in our articles of association and mission statements, and in all our strategies and processes. Our efforts to promote sustainability also make an important contribution to the long-term success of our company and to improving general well-being. That is a priority for us as a cooperative. Coop Sustainability Fund Through the Coop Sustainability Fund we support research into sustainable production methods and products in collaboration with partner organizations. In this way, we encourage truly pioneering work. By supporting exhibitions, events and services, we also raise public awareness of sustainable consumption. Our social commitment and projects for our employees also benefit from the fund s resources. The Coop Sustainability Fund invests at least CHF 16.5 million in around 80 projects every year.

Our sustainability structure Our three-pillar approach ensures that sustainability is integrated into all relevant areas of our company. To the top with sustainability Corporate success and the common good Effectiveness Instruments and processes Implementation Pillar 1 Pillar 2 Pillar 3 Sustainable products Environmental and climate protection Employees and social commitment Starting points Strategic basis Foundation Pillar 1: Sustainable products Our biggest impact comes from our products. We stock more than 15,000 sustainable products. That means we offer one of the world s largest and most varied ranges of sustainable products. Nearly half the organic and fairtrade products sold in Switzerland pass through a Coop checkout. We are also committed to ensuring compliance with minimum standards at all stages in the supply chain. We work with our business partners to foster respect for people, animals and nature across our entire product range. Pillar 2: Environment and climate protection In 2008 we set ourselves the goal of being completely carbon-neutral by To lower carbon dioxide emissions, we are continuously reducing our energy consumption and using renewable sources of energy. Foresighted investment and sustainable construction have enabled us to make savings of around CHF 100 million that have been passed on to our customers through lower prices. Using resources efficiently is also important to us so we are actively engaged in waste management and recycling. Pillar 3: Employees and social commitment As a cooperative, we have a special commitment to society and our employees as well as to our members. We are the second largest provider of apprenticeships in Switzerland. Our 37,000 employees throughout the country benefit from the best collective employment agreement in the Swiss retail sector, a wide range of training and development opportunities and good career prospects. Since 1942, Coop Aid for Mountain Regions has supported families and businesses in Switzerland s mountain regions and organizations such as Swiss food banks and the Swiss Red Cross.

Organic In 1993 we launched Naturaplan, the first organic brand in the Swiss retail sector. In this way, we helped organic products become established on the Swiss market. Today, every second organic product sold in Switzerland passes through a Coop checkout. We promote environmentally friendly production of our conventional products too, for example, by requiring our suppliers to reduce pesticide usage. Fairtrade We work closely with Max Havelaar to extend our range of fairtrade products and improve the living and working conditions of farming families in the south. They benefit from higher and more stable incomes, long-term trading relationships and increased selfdetermination. The fairtrade markup is used to invest in local infrastructure, healthcare projects and training on a local basis. No. 173 We go through thick and thin together for organic produce Since 1993 we have worked in partnership with Bio Suisse, the umbrella association of Swiss organic farmers. Together we promote organic farming in accordance with the rigorous Bio Suisse guidelines, both in Switzerland and abroad. No. 137 We have Switzerland s largest selection of fairtrade goods Trading is fair if both sides are satisfied. For that reason, we started to create Switzerland s largest range of fairtrade goods with Max Havelaar in Every second Fairtrade Max Havelaar product sold in Switzerland passes through a Coop checkout. Our aim is to switch all raw materials from developing countries and emerging markets used in our own brands to Fairtrade Max Havelaar by No. 193 We are the world s largest marketer of fairtrade organic cotton No. 251 Look here all our fresh pineapples are fairtrade

Animal welfare We are a leader in animal welfare and the protection of animals. This is demonstrated by our top rating by Swiss Animal Protection (SAP). Under our Naturaplan and Naturafarm labels, we have been selling meat and eggs from organic agriculture and access-to-range and free-range husbandry for more than 20 years. Fish To protect the oceans, we are committed to sustainable fishing. We do not market any fish that are threatened with extinction and remove overfished species from our range. Since 2006 we have been a partner of the WWF and a founding member of the WWF Seafood Group. By sustainable fish, Coop means that the provenance of all fish available from us is rated as acceptable or recommended by the WWF. No. 8 We scrutinize animal husbandry Our Naturafarm animal welfare program sets standards both nationally and internationally, with especially strict guidelines that far exceed legal requirements. Annual and unannounced inspections by the Swiss animal welfare association SAP confirm that Coop is the number one in animal welfare. No. 174 With us, everyone has enough fish on the table All our fresh and frozen fish and seafood now comes from sustainable sources. We also stock Switzerland s largest selection of organic-grade seafood. No. 3 We are mindful of animal welfare in fashion too No. 254 We support more than 1,100 organic prawn farmers in Vietnam

Energy We make a conscious effort to use energy carefully and to protect the climate in production, transportation and our stores. Since 2007, we have used the Minergie standard for all new and refurbished supermarkets. Solar panels on the roofs of our stores, production facilities and distribution centers generate around 6.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year. Transportation To reduce carbon emissions in the transport of goods, we use fuel from organic waste and transport goods by rail. Since November 2016, Coop has operated the first public hydrogen filling station in Switzerland. We also have high-quality carbon offset projects to compensate for some of the carbon emissions generated by air freight, Coop@home deliveries and business travel. No. 85 We are continuously reducing our CO 2 emissions Between 2008 and 2017 we were able to reduce annual CO 2 emissions in the relevant areas of our company by 24.1 percent. Our aim is to reduce absolute annual CO 2 emissions by a total of 50 percent between 2008 and 2023 and to offset all remaining CO 2 emissions. No. 102 Wherever possible, we transport our goods by rail In close collaboration with our subsidiary Railcare, we use unaccompanied combined transport (UCT) for our goods. We distribute our goods using an efficient mixture of road and rail transport. For example, all stores that are more than 90 km from our refrigerated distribution center in Schafisheim are supplied using UCT. That reduces pressure on the roads and is also better for the climate. No. 216 We are building our supermarkets to the Minergie standard No. 49 Our electric truck is quiet, energyefficient and emission-free

Employees We offer the best employment conditions in the Swiss retail sector these are enjoyed by the 37,000 employees from all parts of the country who are covered by the collective employment agreement. Alongside a wide range of training and development opportunities, the Coop Group offers more than 3,500 apprenticeships. Over 65 percent of our apprentices are given a permanent contract at the end of their training. Society As a cooperative, we support social products at home and abroad, provide straightforward aid after natural disasters and actively support children and young people. Coop Aid for Mountain Regions supports around 170 selfhelp projects every year. That helps improve the future for many farming families and strengthens mountain regions. Moreover, by sourcing various products from sheltered workshops, we help integrate people with disabilities into the world of work. No. 112 Not all our 3,465 apprentices fit in the photo We are the second largest provider of apprenticeships in Switzerland, offering 31 different training courses and countless professional prospects. We offer careers in sales, logistics, administration, catering, production and transportation. No. 105 We donate food and money Since 2004, we have donated a considerable amount of date-expired food which is still in perfect condition but can no longer be sold to the Schweizer Tafel and Tischlein deck dich foodbank initiatives. They distribute the food to social institutions or directly to needy people in Switzerland. Every year we donate around 2,200 tonnes of food and CHF 400,000 francs to these two organizations.
