4 ADDRESSING HUNGER ABROAD Extreme poverty persists in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam s agricultural hub. Heifer Vietnam exemplifies the Heifer model of combining livestock, training, community building, women s empowerment and environmentally sound farming practices for a holistic approach to ending poverty in these rural communities. Our work is improving families income, productive assets, nutrition and housing. Projects in the country have assisted 44,400 families in 23 provinces In the past two years, average family income has increased from $2,471 to $3,702, with one cooperative and eight collectives selling milk, vegetables, chickens and cattle In the same time, 578 Heifer-formed community groups have increased their savings from $175,936 to more than $500,000 Heifer Vietnam: Provides families with livestock and cash crop seeds so they can produce a healthy, reliable food supply on their land while growing enough to sell at market Links farmers with cooperatives for marketing of products to sustain and grow income Trains farmers to adopt farming practices like organic fertilizing, composting and creating clean-burning biogas by converting animal waste 4

5 ADDRESSING HUNGER AT HOME Heifer USA is built on the belief that small-scale farmers and locally produced food are the keys to feeding communities in the United States. We are currently supporting two cooperatives in Arkansas while developing sustainable farmers and farming networks. In the future, we are expanding our strategy to other locations in the U.S. Our program: Sustains higher incomes for small-scale farmers, making full-time, small-scale farming a viable option Empowers farmers by providing training and connecting them to markets that sell healthy food in the U.S. In the last year, the Arkansas-based cooperatives Heifer International supports have seen increased success: New South Produce Cooperative provides produce to an average of 450 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shareholders per season Grass Roots Farmers Cooperative has served 647 direct-to-consumer customers and now has shipping to all 48 continental states Average farming revenue increased by 7 percent for New South Produce Cooperative members and by 25 percent for Grass Roots farmers in 2016 In addition, 22 percent of Heifer USA s cooperative farmers are women, compared to only 12 percent of farmers in Arkansas. About 19 percent of cooperative farmers represent diverse ethnicities, compared to 4 percent of farmers statewide. 5
