2 LOCAL DAIRY FARMS Dairy Business prvides livelihds t ver 60 millin farmers in India. Farmers earn n seasnal basis frm their agriculture prductin hence their dependency is mre n dairy business t meet ut their daily financial requirement. Nearly 80% f India s milk prductin is prvided by small and marginal farmers, with an average herd size f 1 t 2 milching animals. In India, there is high dependence n family labr and limitatins t deplying mechanized milching systems, given the small herd size hlding. Mst f the farmers are still practicing the traditinal way f raising their cattle and they cnsider dairy as agriculture allied livelihd activity, there is lng way befre cnsidering dairy as main business as cnsistently decreased prfit ut f it. 4 BYPRODUCTS: KEY PROJECT INPUTS The cntext: T tackle the current deficit f green fdder and cncentrates in India. Punjab ne f the develped states in India- has experienced green revlutin which transfrmed wheat and paddy grwing areas since the last 3 decades. Prject area is facing feed and fdder availability challenges due t declined fdder prductivity and fdder grwing area. The current deficit f green fdder and cncentrates is abut 34%. Mst f the farmers have t purchase feed frm market s dairy sectr is n mre cnsidered as a prfitable business. The impact: Almst 80% f the farmers f the prject are implementing these byprducts in their feed ratis. Since Punjab 2020 was in first phase when implementing these new practices, we tried this interventin with 30 farmers and 25 farmers adpted these new practices. Our ambitin is t reach ut ver 1000 farmers t prmte these practices in prject area, during the phase 2 f the prject. The idea: T valrize agricultural byprducts (e.g. wheat straw). The challenges: Changing hw ur farmers tend t manage their field while they have been fllwing ancestral and traditinal practices fr their whle life. Mst f the farmers burn wheat and paddy crps straw after harvesting which cause envirnmental pllutin as well as lss f resurces. This available wheat straw can be cnverted int animal feed by prper prcessing which will ensure feed availability at farmer s dairy farm level with reduced csts and als enhance the milk quality and quantity. Glbal implementatin results f the prject: An imprvement f byprducts availability The interventin f Punjab 2020 prject helped t prtect mre than 50 tns f wheat straw burning and further cnverted it int animal feed. The cultivated wheat crp was thrugh rganic agriculture practices hence the frmulated feed was chemical free and was having gd tests. A 27% decrease f feed csts The interventins helped 25 farmers t make available additinal feed during 100 days with a cst reductin f feed cst meaning a 27% decrease. The disseminatin f these practices: Existing means f cmmunicatin: Learn frm thers-field visits : t spread the gd practices amng farmers Training prgrams t farmers with fcus n feed management Technical advice: the team has cllected sme samples f available byprducts and suggested farmers n hw t valrize them An imprvement f milk quality The quality f milk frm Punjab 2020 prject has been imprved and fund all parameters in line with Danne s milk quality requirements. 4/5

5 With the fast shrinking f arable lands and natural resurces, availability and quality f feed is increasingly becming a challenge. Feeding byprducts t the cws can be a way t enhance milk quantity and quality and reduce feed csts.
