6 Agricultural Research Unit Agricultural research in three main areas: -Plant Breeding Group The scope of this group is to generate new cultivars and variations by using nuclear techniques. Starting points of these researches are, improvingi yield and quality, stress tolerance, resistance to diseases, higher nitrogen fixation capacity, suitable for mechanized harvesting. - Plant Protection Group The scope of this group is determination of pesticide which are used to control insects, plant diseases and weeds in the agricultural products residues in the plant and soil by using radiotracer technique in combination with other chromatographic techniques. -Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition Group The scope of this group is the use of radioactive and stable isotopes to investigate t the fertility levelsl of the soils, the fertilizer usage efficiencies of plants, and the relationships of fertilizers in different environments. Also,15N, 13C by IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectroscopy) py) and neutron probe techniques are used to determine the soil - plant nutrient-water relationships.

9 Gamma Irradiation Facility It was established in 1993 by the assistance of IAEA and UNDP. It is located in SANAEM, The storage area is 800 m 2. It is Hungarian made SVST-1 category IV tote-box type irradiator, The irradiation source is Cobalt-60 radioisotope, Source activity is Ci ( as of April 2011), 2740 m 3 food products and 1030 m 3 medical products were irradiated in 2010.

10 This facility has a license from Ministry of Health to irradiate single-use medical products (compresses and bandages, operation clothes, covers and operation sets, catheters, sutures, dialyze filters and sets, operation gloves etc). It has also food irradiation licence from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Food products (Spices, dried vegetables, dried herbs, aromatic additives and herbal teas) are irradiated to provide microbiological decontamination, increase shelf life, prevent germination.
