Introduction to CIMSANS David I Gustafson, Ph.D. Director, CIMSANS dgustafson@ilsi.org International Life Sciences Institute Research Foundation 4 th Annual AgMIP Meeting Columbia University, USA 29 October 2013

ILSI Research Foundation has launched a new Center to study climate change impacts on agriculture and nutrition security Context of the Issue: Three major megatrends are converging to threaten global nutrition security 1. Global population growth and changing diets will increase food demand two-fold by Current crop productivity gains and food storage losses barely keep pace with demand today 3. Future climate change will differentially affect specific crops and regions adaptation strategies are currently inadequate 2

CIMSANS Mission Create a new global forum to more fully engage private and public sector scientists in academic programs and partnerships on climate, sustainable agriculture and nutrition security Accelerate collaboration to collect data; analyze models; and predict the impact of climate change on agriculture and nutrition security on a regional and global basis Develop new public-private partnerships that leverage the broad private sector expertise and experience in crop production and storage, food/feed processing, movement, and local consumption patterns Work with leading partners like IFPRI, FAO, EMBRAPA, etc. to specifically understand challenges and solutions for people in developing countries most at risk from climate change and resource scarcity Identify adaptation strategies for key global staple crops considering resource constraints and sustainability Attract new private sector capabilities and solutions to CIMSANS, forge broader global research partnerships in agriculture, grain handling/processing, information and imaging technologies 3

What will CIMSANS actually do? CIMSANS will foster new public-private partnerships that improve both scientific understanding and public policy around the growing impacts of climate change and resource scarcity especially water on global nutrition security. Focus areas for the center include consideration of the entire global food system, by addressing such issues as food waste, post-harvest losses, inadequate distribution, and overconsumption in addition to enhancing the sustainability and nutrition aspects of current food security evaluation efforts. CIMSANS has already improved the impact assessments for maize (corn) and is now focused on producing the first credible, comprehensive, global assessment of sustainable nutrition security that includes at least ten of the world s most important staple foods.

CIMSANS Participants ( tri-partite ) Academia Private Sector Governments, etc.

Launch Biannual Sustainable Food & Nutrition Security Conference (2014) Up to 200 stakeholders from around the world assemble to create new partnerships to help the world s hungriest people meet their growing food and nutrition needs in more sustainable ways. ILSI-RF partners with others to convene a watershed conference at The Carter Center in Atlanta kicked-off by former President Jimmy Carter, a farmer himself Among those invited to attend are former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, former Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bill Gates, Howard Buffet, Ted Turner, Kofi Annan, Bono, George Clooney, and the leaders of impacted countries in Africa and India The event will leverage strong media opportunities in the home city of CNN in a respected venue attended by a critical mass of individuals and organizations that can take bold and meaningful action.
