Agriculture and dairy are the chief sources of income for the denizens of Telangana. AGRICULTURE IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA Agriculture, with its allied sectors, is unquestionably the largest livelihood provider in India, more so in the vast rural areas. It also contributes a significant figure to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Sustainable agriculture, in terms of food security, rural employment, and environmentally sustainable technologies such as soil conservation, sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity protection, are essential for holistic rural development. Indian agriculture and allied activities have witnessed a green revolution, a white revolution, a yellow revolution and a blue revolution. DAIRY FARMING IN INDIA The importance of dairy enterprise in the national economy can be gauged from the fact that the value of output from milk group is highest among all the agricultural commodities, accounting for nearly one fourth of the value of output from agricultural sector. Dairying is one of the most important means of providing livelihood and nutritional security to the rural masses. The livestock activities, among which dairy farming predominates, employ about 8.5 million workers in the country. Milk and milk products account for 9.2 and.4 percent of protein intake in rural and urban areas, respectively, which is higher than the protein intake through nonvegetarian animal products. The increased production of milk has improved the per capita milk availability to 250 grams per day. The demand of milk and milk products in India is projected to increase to million tones in 2015 and further to million tones in INDIAN AGRICULTURE AT A GLANCE Agriculture continues to be the backbone of Indian economy. Agriculture sector employs 54.6% of the total workforce. The total Share of Agriculture & Allied Sectors (Including Agriculture, Livestock, forestry and fishery sub sectors) in terms of percentage of Gross Domestic Product is 13.9 percent during at prices. 6 Agriculture plays a vital role in India s economy. Over 58 per cent of the rural households depend on agriculture as their principal means of livelihood. Agriculture, along with fisheries and forestry, is one of the largest contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices and spice products. It ranks third in farm and agriculture outputs. Agricultural export constitutes 10 per cent of the country s exports and is the fourthlargest exported principal commodity. The agro industry in India is divided into several sub segments such as canned, dairy, processed, frozen food to fisheries, meat, poultry, and food grains. Rising consumption coupled with better margins in the value added dairy products (VADPs) are driving the dairy players to get into the growth and higher profitable trajectory. Change in demographics and rapid urbanization have resulted into manifold surge in the demand for VADPs. Milk products such as curd which were largely home products are currently available under various brands. Due to convenience, health benefits and increased consumerism, milk derivatives like buttermilk, low fat yogurt and flavored milk are nowadays part of regular consumption. Factors such as reduced transaction costs and time, improved port gate management and better fiscal incentives would contribute to the sector s growth. Furthermore, the growing use of genetically N modified crops will likely improve the yield for Indian farmers.
