7 Economy and Industry Profile The economy of the district is heavily dependant on Agriculture and Dairy Farming Highest producer of Cereals, Ber (Indian Jujube) and Pomegranate in the State Sabar Dairy in Sabarkantha district manufactures and distributes different types of milk products Production of large quantities of clay, silica sand and bauxite has opened up new avenues for the glass, tiles, fine bricks and crockery Food processing and textiles are the other emerging sectors which have opened up new opportunities for investment Some key players having operations in Sabarkantha are Sabar dairy, Pathik Agrotech, Oracle Granite Limited, Gujarat Ambuja Exports Ltd., Eureka Tiles, City Tiles Ltd. 7

13 Economy Drivers The region has advantages of rich agriculture base and availability of fertile land. Major section of the society depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Recent surge in the growth of ceramic industry in the district has improved employment potential Production of large quantities of clay, silica sand and bauxite has opened up new avenues for the glass, tiles, fine bricks and crockery industries Small scale industry sectors such as food processing, vitrified tiles, wood products and chemical-based sectors/industries are the supporting pillars of the economy. They provide direct and indirect employment to over 34,000 people in the district Excellent road and rail connectivity to major districts of the State is playing a major role in driving the economy of the district 13

17 Road, Rail, Air Network Road Map 5 : Sabarkantha Road & Rail Network NH 8 passes through the district connecting it with major cities of the State and also with the rest of India. 21 Education and Health Infrastructure Education The district has a government engineering college and one government polytechnic colleges, which offer courses in computer, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering There are 23 government arts and commerce colleges as well as one pharmacy college spread across the district 22 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the district impart training in areas such as cutting and sewing, armature and motor rewinding, computer operating & programming assistance, wiring, hair and skin care, fitting and stenography The Civil Hospital at Himmatnagar taluka provides a certificate course of one and a half years for health workers Health Educational Institutes Polytechnic College Pharmacy College Engineering College Total The district has 62 primary healthcare centers, 18 community healthcare centers and 6 sub centers The Seva Tribal Hospital at Idar taluka provides medical facilities in pediatrics, cardiac, obstetrics and gynecology The district also has a Government Ayurvedic Hospital and a Civil Hospital 21 Source: Sabarkantha District Profile:

23 Tourism Idar Hill, Clock Tower, Ruthi Rani no Mahal (Palace of Sulking Queen), The Shantinath Temple and Shrimad Rajchandra Vihar are some of the attractions in the town Idar is a significant town in Sabarkantha and is a good base for excursions to areas such as Khedbrahma, Vijaynagar and Poshina The Shamlaji Temple in the district, stands in honor of Lord Vishnu and is one of Gujarat s main pilgrimage sites. The magnificence of the temple is enhanced by exquisite stone carvings, idols of Gods, nymphs, beautiful domed ceilings and a towering spire Shamlaji Temple Polo forests and the ruins of old Hindu and Jain temples in Vijaynagar are known for their natural beauty and historical significance Sir Pratap Singh Palace is more than a century old and houses portraits of English royalty, hunting scenes, trophies etc. 23 Polo Forest Source: Gujarat India Guide
