2 Farm to Fork Industry BULLETIN showcase An important contribution to global food security: Evonik amino acids The UN estimates that global population is increasing by about 80 million each year. How will all these people be adequately fed, and how will the increasing demand for meat, for example, be satisfied in the future? Amino acids from Evonik Industries, used as animal feed additives, provide one solution: In addition to ensuring balanced nutrition, they protect the environment and save valuable resources. Evonik produces all four of the amino acids MetAMINO (DL-methionine), Biolys (L-lysine), ThreAMINO (L-threonine), and TrypAMINO (L-tryptophan) for resource efficient animal feed. More sustainability in agriculture More meat means more livestock breeding and more animal feed and therefore more arable land, higher consumption of energy and water, and correspondingly higher greenhouse gas emissions for cultivation and transport. Other consequences include increasing competition for agricultural land, which is also required for fruit and vegetable cultivation, as well as more liquid manure, resulting in higher environmental pollution due to overfertilization. The long-term solution consists in sustainably reducing resource consumption in agriculture and simultaneously increasing productivity. One key to this lies in animal feeds and the protein building blocks they contain - amino acids. For example, three kilograms of the amino acids DL-methionine and L-lysine can replace 88 kilograms of fish meal and soy bean meal in animal feed for chicken. This is not only protecting valuable resources but has an immediate cost saving effect. The new methionine production complex in Singapore In November 2014, Evonik inaugurated the new methionine complex in Singapore, after two years of construction. Evonik now produces DL-methionine globally at four sites: in pg 32 your farm to fork industry news

3 Evonik DL-methionine production site in Singapore The Evonik analytical center for animal feed located in Singapore provides amino acid analysis of feed and feed ingredients Wesseling (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), Mobile (Alabama, USA), and in Singapore. The new plant in Singapore has an annual capacity of 150,000 metric tons, bringing Evonik s methionine capacity up to 580,000 metric tons. This new state-of-the-art facility is completely back-integrated and Evonik s first world-scale methionine plant in Asia. With the global production network and sophisticated logistics, Evonik can offer customers supply security all over the world. Analytical Services for Asia Since its opening in 2013, the analytical center for animal feed located in Singapore has been providing amino acid analysis of feed and feed ingredients to Asian and global feed manufacturers. In depth analysis of amino acid concentration in feed ingredients benchmarked against the requirements of different animals allows feed manufacturer to select the best suitable ingredients, to provide more consistent quality in feed, and to increase the efficiency of their production. The range of services provided include wet chemistry analysis of amino acid content in raw materials, compound feed, premixes and physiological samples (AMINOLab ), wet chemistry analysis of supplemented amino acids as tool to monitor the mixer homogeneity (AMINOBatch ), and near infrared reflectance spectroscopy analytical services for prediction of amino acid content in raw materials (AMINONIR ). In addition to nutrient analysis of feed and feed ingredients, this analytical center offers feed manufacturers the opportunity to be trained in amino acid analytics and to learn how to best apply this knowledge into this production for more consistent, high-quality feed leading to improved animal production, better sustainability, and increased profitability.
