Refocusing R&D and innovation policy onmajor challenges for our society like climate change, energy and resource efficiency, health and demographic change Strengthening every link in the innovation chain, from 'blue sky' research to commercialisation KEY INITIATIVES: Investing 3% of EU GDP on R&D by 2020 to create 3.7 million jobs and increase annual GDP by 795 billion by Complete European Research Area - ERA -by 2014 Business-Academia collaboration Single EU market for Innovation Stimulate private sector investment Social Innovation European Innovation Partnership (EIP)- Public/Private collaboration Improve research infrastructures

What is Horizon 2020? What is new A single programme bringing together three separate programmes/initiatives (the Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme-CIP and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology-EIT) New approach on: Innovation: including all forms of innovation from research to retail; Societal challenges: solving challenges faced by EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and transport; Simplification: easier access to research projects, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries and beyond.

European Research Area - ERA ERA: The European Research Area is composed of all research and development activities, programmes and policies in Europe which involve a transnational perspective.it promotes 5 Initiatives: A single labour market for researchers (Quality & quantity of researchers and attracting the best talents Mobility between institutions, sectors and across borders) Joint programming (together with the ERA NET instrument) World Class research infrastructures (Improve, integrate & structure existing RIs& accessibility Facilitate joint establishment & operation Develop & maximise the use of e infrastructures(geant, repositories) Governance: coherent European strategy for all current initiatives) Effective Knowledge sharing (Increase exploitation of publicly funded R&D results by public research organisations -Better management of intellectual property Opening of ERA to the world (Globalisation & global challenges (e.g. climate, energy security-facilitate knowledge transfer at global level- research new partners-etc.)

ERA -nets c The objective of the ERA-NET scheme is to enhance cooperation and coordination of research activities carried out at national /regional level in the Member States including mutual opening of national and regional research programmes. The most important for OFF is the ERA-NET CORE ORGANIC II: CORE Organic II aim: a) agree on common research priorities; b)select transnational research projects to be funded by the partners. Network of 26 partners from 21 European countries The ERA-net started March 2010to run for three years It will launch at least two transnational calls, initiate research projects organize project monitoring and dissemination of results, and consider funding models. CORE Organic might be followed with an organic ERA-net plus.

Joint Programming Initiatives (JPI): The overall aim of Joint Programming is to pool national research efforts in order to make better use of Europe's precious public R&D resources and to tackle common European challenges more effectively in a few key areas: Member States agree common visions and strategic research agendas to address major societal challenges. Targets mainly public research programmes & public cooperation (differs from public-private cooperation embodied in initiatives such as Joint Technology Initiatives). Has potential to become a mechanism as important as the Framework Programmes in the European research landscape JPI is about achieving structuring effects in order to increase the efficiency and impact of public research funding.

What kind of JPI interesting for organic : The following Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) have been identified: 1) Neurodegenerative Diseases/Alzheimer's; 2) Agriculture, food security and climate change, 3) A healthy diet for a healthy life 4) Cultural heritage & global change 5) Urban Europe 6) CliK'EU; 7) More years, better lives 8) Antimicrobial resistance 9) Water challenges, 10)Healthy & productive seas and oceans

JPI: Agriculture, food security c and climate change (FACCE) FACCE implement public consulation in 2012: TP Organics highlighted the very important role of organic agriculture in meeting the challenges addressed TPOrganics emphasized different innovative approaches reaching from improved irrigation, waste management and pest control, resource efficiency and resource saving methods towards new approaches like eco- functional intensification, a broader understanding of innovation with more transdisciplinary and participatory research.

European Innovation Partnership - EIP: EIP will will be framework to bring together major EU activities and policies. It is key instrument to work as a mediator enhancing communication between science and practice. EIPs have to work within agreed budget lines, no specific one will be created. will bring together main actors, policies and actions at EU and national levels, from research to market Anounced EIPs: The first pilot programme on EIP has been onhealthy Ageing and it aims to increase the average number of healthy life years by 2 and reinforce sustainability and efficiency. Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability". Water efficiency and water security;

EIP Agricultural Sustainability c and Productivity The Commission has recently launched EIP in Feb 2012 for period from : Aims to address how to increase production and productivity and how to improve sustainability and resource efficiency and address environmental issues in food production Challenges of "not only how to produce more, but also how to produce better". Aims to provide a working interface between agriculture, bioeconomy, science, advisors, and other stakeholders at EU, national and regional level. Bring innovative approaches faster from science to practice and to ensure a systematic feedback about needs from practice to the scientific community. It will look at actions provided by the Rural Development Policy and the Research Framework. These may include cooperation, pilot-projects, knowledge transfer, advisory services, and dissemination.

c TP Organics is the Technology Platform (TP) for organic food and farming research that aims to influence policy decision makers (e.g. EU Commission and EU Parliament) in order to improve support for organic food and farming research. TP Organics is industry-led consortia with research community, public authorities, regions, finance sector, civil society that integrates views of its stakeholders to represent a broad perspective on research and development priorities that can leverage organic potential to address contemporary challenges. TP Organics was initiated in 2007 with the aim to identify the research priorities in organic sector, as research is fundamental factor to find solutions to social challenges, development of the sector and innovations. It is the first and only one Technology Platform that deals in particular with organic agriculture and food production.
