4 3DEDICATION TO BRING OUT DLF Grass Partners THE VERY BEST IN SEEDS Seeds & Science in action See page 5 Advanced Grasses included in a wide range of ForageMax mixtures See page 6 DLF Trial Site established in Ireland Variety Trials To test varieties of grass, we have two harvest years following sowing. In the first harvest year we use the General Purpose protocol as defined by the Department of Agriculture recommended list. This is one spring grazing cut followed by two silage cuts and then three grazing cuts. In the second year we implement the simulated grazing protocol which is an 8 10 cut system taken at periods corresponding to current commercial practice. Mixture Trials There is no variety that ticks every box, optimal spring growth, summer and autumn growth, combined with high digestibility and ground cover scores. That is why our research team designs mixtures based on individual variety performance and trial data from the actual mixture. We pride ourselves on mixture formulation which is tried and tested under Irish conditions to ensure productivity as promised from our brands. ProNitro fertiliser coating is available on overseeding mixtures and clover blends See page 7 GroMax biostimulant is included in all conventional mixtures at no extra cost See page 8 The mixtures include top varieties fully endorsed by the Irish recommended lists Training - DLF Academy DLF prides itself on the level of training and support it can offer. It is essential that both merchants and growers are kept abreast of the latest techniques and developments in the industry. Livestock producers who use ForageMax mixtures can be assured that their supplier has access to one of the best grass seed training facilities in Europe.

6 5 DLF Grass Partners DLF GRASS PARTNERS Quality or quantity? - that is the question Having access to trials from all over Europe means that we can give Irish farmers the key benefits and learnings from our research network. For example a trial was carried out at Newland Home Farm, England by kind permission of David and Chris Halhead. The farm supports a 160 cow herd that is housed and on a robotic milking system yielding 10,000 litres per cow. Grass destined for ensiling has been weighed and analysed over 2 seasons to observe the differences year on year. In both 2014 and 2015 the samples and weights were taken on exactly the same day to give a direct comparison. The results have presented some very thought provoking statistics and in light of today s climate of tight margins, silage producers need to ask themselves do I forfeit quality in persuit of quantity? The mixture sampled during 2014 & 15 was VersaMax Meat and Milk. This mixture features 51% More Milk varieties which guarantee the genetic potential. The aim is now to harvest at the optimum time. The table below illustrates the results of manual weighing and pre - cut sampling. The variation from year to year is staggering. What it says though is be aware of the season sample and take action. If the sample shows the grass is ready do not wait because once the heading process begins the forage quality falls quickly and the energy is gone. We drilled VersaMax Flexicrop in autumn We did this to maintain the advantages of high DNDF cultivars (39% inclusion) and introduce the Advanced Hybrid Lofa. This was to introduce extra yield with no quality penalty (See page 6). Due to grazing early in 2015 the 1st cut was compromised but gave a good second cut to out- perform the meat and milk which was excellent in its own right. More Flexicrop has been drilled autumn NEWLAND HOME FARM TRIALS MEAT & MILK st Cut 2nd Cut MEAT & MILK st Cut 2nd Cut FLEXICROP 2015 (sown autumn 2014) 1st Cut 2nd Cut Fresh weight tonnes/acre Dry Matter % Total kg/dm Me Mj/kg/DM NDF Total Mj/acre Total energy produced 2 cuts 36639mj 40179mj 41012mj Points to consider from the project: Be aware of the weather s effect on crop development Clearly define your forage requirements Select an appropriate mixture Monitor, Measure and Mow Go for quality - avoid letting the crop seed David & Chris Halhead

7 Plant Technology 6 Digestible forage = Healthy stock = More Milk & better LWG Having spent many years improving yield and disease resistance, the main goal now is to improve feed value and digestibility of the fibre components. Developing ever higher yielding varieties may be counter-productive especially in countries with strict limits on nitrogen use. The breeders at DLF are now focused on producing varieties of grass with improved forage quality, in particular those with high cell wall digestibility (DNDF). Fibre is one of the main reasons for feeding grass to ruminants, but it can be indigestible and consequently locks up valuable nutrients. Research has shown that a 10% improvement in fibre digestibility can raise milk production by 6.4% and at the same time reduce nitrogen released into the environment by 4.9%. These tangible goals are what DLF is striving to achieve for farmers. 8 7 Plant Technology Quality and Quantity the complete package! Advanced Grasses are created by crossing fescues with ryegrasses. The objective of this Advanced hybrid breeding is to create grass varieties with high forage quality combined with good persistence, stress tolerance and disease resistance. Yield increases of between 10% and 50% are common when DLF varieties of Advanced Grasses are tested in trials. Why are Advanced Grasses so successful? Intensive breeding for more than 40 years Greater tolerance to variations in climate, soil management etc Yield improvement from crossing of two non-related species Development of types and varieties with different characters TALL FESCUE HYKOR is suitable for silage mixtures together with perennial ryegrass, hybrid ryegrass and lucerne or red clover. The Advanced Tall Fescue increases the persistency of the mixture due to the deeper root system and tolerance to dry conditions. Hykor also shows excellent forage quality. ITALIAN RYEGRASS The varieties PERSEUS and PERUN have all the attributes of an Italian ryegrass but exhibit improved persistence and stress tolerance. They are ideal in short term mixtures of up to 3 years duration and are especially good companions for red clover. ADVANCED GRASSES PERFORMANCE DATA HYKOR Advanced Tall Fescue YIELD T DM/HA % SUGAR CONTENT % PROTEIN CONTENT ME MJ/KG DM D-VALUE Tall Fescue PERSEUS Advanced Italian Ryegrass LOFA Advanced Hybrid Ryegrass HYBRID RYEGRASS The variety LOFA has the broadest appeal of all Advanced Grasses. It has all the attributes of a hybrid ryegrass but exhibits improved persistence and stress tolerance over standard hybrid ryegrass varieties. These characteristics make Lofa an ideal component in medium term mixtures as its persistence, being 1-2 years more than standard hybrid ryegrass, matches the expected duration of the vast majority of medium term mixtures currently used in the UK. Tetraploid Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass Crown rust resistance is plain to see

9 Seed Technology 8 Pelleted N seed coating Efficient seedbed fertiliser placement Increases forage yield and therefore more meat and milk Emergence, density and wear are improved ProNitro is a coating with nutrients located around the seed, as a supplement to the seeds own reserves With ProNitro there are easily accessible nutrients on each individual seed Contains 10% N Sow at 12kg / acre (30kg / ha) for overseeding This results in a number of advantages: Enhanced early growth and improved tolerance to stress Fertiliser application exactly in the root zone = Better utilisation of nutrients and reduced loss to the environment Bigger and heavier seeds in better contact with soil surface Feeds only the seed not the weed or surrounding grass Better root and shoot extension Average of +30% more viable plants No application costs ProNitro 3 days after sowing Control 3 days after sowing ProNitro is available on all GrassMax mixtures and clover blends GroMax Biostimulant Biostimulants do not offer the benefit of added nutrients; they simply assist the seedling s ability to take advantage of the soil s own inherent reserves of nutrient by stimulating the soil s microflora, resulting in improved root growth and establishment. INGREDIENT SUMMARY HUMIC ACIDS Rich in auxin type substances which enhance antioxidant synthesis important in increasing plant metabolism under stress conditions Serve as an important high carbon food source for soil micro-organisms Improve the permeability of cell-wall membranes in roots, allowing more rapid absorption of essential nutrients SEAWEED EXTRACT Contains high levels of cytokinins which promote cell division and lateral root growth and delay the ageing process of plant tissue Stimulates root growth after damage by disease or root feeding insects, or under conditions of temperature, water or salt stress SUCROSE Serves as a high energy food source for plant and soil micro-organisms B COMPLEX & K VITAMINS Act as important catalysts to enhance and drive plant metabolism. Vitamin B1 is widely used as a rooting aid AMINO ACIDS Form the building blocks of proteins - essential for plant growth and metabolism POTASSIUM Plays a vital role in disease resistance and overall hardiness of grass plants Following extensive research DLF is delighted to continue to offer the benefits of biostimulants to the ForageMax range All standard ForageMax mixtures, with the exception of the organic range, will be treated with GroMax at no extra cost.

The Pasture Profit Index is designed as a guide to assist in variety selection when planning to reseed. Variety selection may depend on the intended grazing management to be practiced (e.g. grazing, silage, etc.). Guide to reading the table: PPI details (Total /ha per year): indicates relative profitability difference when compared to the base values. For further information on the PPI - PPI sub-indices: Seasonal DM yield (spring, summer and autumn), Quality (April, May, June and July), Silage (1st and 2nd cut), Persistency. Persistency is modelled over 12 years which is in line with industry practice (Creighton et al., 2012) This indicates the economic merit of each variety within each trait, summed together this provides the overall PPI value. When using the index evaluate varieties across their sub-index values and choose the most appropriate for the intended enterprise. Varieties marked with (*) Solas, Seagoe, Aspect, Clanrye, Twymax, Majestic, Stefani and Piccadilly have only one sowing year data available (two harvest years data), therefore this is provisional data.

19 Overseeding 18 Overseeding pays off Open swards yield too little Overseeding using the correct mixtures and machinery designed for the job is now accepted as good practice to both maintain the physical and nutritional quality of medium and long term swards. When the sward becomes open allowing weeds and unsown species to invade, overseeding will quickly check this and maintain the productivity by increasing both yield and quality. The loss of 1 tonne 11MJ/ kg DM equates to MJ. This is the difference between success and failure in production from forage. Overseeding a sward with the correct GrassMax TM mixture will help maintain production beyond its expected life. 21 Overseeding Mixtures 20 Discovering the value of a new grass ley The costs involved in establishing a new ley are often considered to be high. However over the lifetime of the ley the initial cost becomes very small compared to potential output and production achieved. It has long been accepted that a new ley will produce around 20% more DM/acre than the grass it replaces in its first year alone. This figure along with better forage quality makes the decision to reseed very easy. Recent advances in grass breeding now allow farmers access to the very best varieties available. The ability to measure fibre digestibility (DNDF) will allow growers to unlock the true potential in the grassland and maximise production from home grown forage. Average benefits in first production year (potential milk yield) +20% DM/acre = 11MJ/kg DM(old = 8800MJ/kgDM 8800MJ = 1692litre IRE average 26c/l = 440 potential extra production 8800MJ = 1692litre UK average 23ppl = 389 potential extra milk production Typical costs for seed bed preparation & sowing Ploughing 33 per acre Power harrowing per acre Rolling (before & after sowing 9.63x2) per acre Cross drilling 44 per acre Sub - total per acre Grass seed (6yr ley) per acre Total per acre Other costs may include liming, seedbed fertiliser, spraying, finance charges, bringing the cost to per acre Milk yield is easier to quantify than LWG but it goes without saying that huge benefits from new grass leys will apply to both beef and sheep also RESEEDING PAYS - THE BENEFITS LAST FOR MANY YEARS!

23 Equine Mixtures 22 HorseMax Paddock Long term horse grazing with an option to produce a quality hay crop. HorseMax Paddock is designed using diploid Perennial Ryegrasses, Timothy and Creeping Red Fescue. Sward density is a key consideration as both grazing and winter feed are often produced from the same area. Timothy is much favoured by horses and in particular gives hay a sweet smell and is very palatable. Creeping Red Fescue is key to keeping the sward together and because of its growth habit quickly repairs the turf when damaged by hooves.
