1 Industry-Leading PLAN PLANT PROTECT PERFORM

2 Industry-Leading As an Asgrow brand soybean breeder, I have worked in Soybean Variety Development for seven years with Monsanto. Iowa is unique because there are different growing challenges throughout the region. Standability is the focus in western Iowa, while Soybean Cyst Nematode and iron deficiency chlorosis are concerns to be met in the northwestern and central parts of the state. We are developing high-yielding soybeans with the defensive traits and herbicide tolerance our customers need. We have a broad germplasm pool to identify high-yielding parents to develop new future varieties. 4 Industry-Leading Top-end yield potential is our emphasis and focus. All products need a strong defensive package to remain in the presence of historical diseases. Through breeding efforts, we are seeing a little less concern with brown stem rot; however, sudden death syndrome is a year-to-year concern. At our site we test locally and broadly across the Midwest and other areas to place the product head-to-head against the potential stresses it might face. This testing allows the breeders to determine how products will perform under different as well as combined stresses. 6 Industry-Leading I have been involved with soybean breeding for the past 25 years, and I currently focus on producing high-yielding soybeans. In order to help enhance the yield performance growers desire, these cultivars need several agronomic traits incorporated into them. In Ohio, Phytophthora Root Rot is a primary concern for growers, but Soybean Cyst Nematode, white mold and other diseases are also important. Oil composition is a specialty trait of interest to many growers of the region, and our program has developed Vistive Gold soybean products, pending regulatory approval, for the high oleic soybean market. 8 Industry-Leading I am responsible for breeding and testing elite lines at representative locations in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota. Developing dicamba-tolerant soybeans has been the primary goal of the northern breeding program I manage. Breeding to deliver Asgrow germplasm with improved Phytophthora Root Rot and white mold disease resistance, Soybean Cyst Nematode protection and iron deficiency chlorosis tolerance drives the breeding efforts for my team. Products are tested in nurseries where they are exposed to diseases and stresses to make sure they offer robust protection. Then, products are advanced to field testing representing a broad set of environments throughout the region. 10 Industry-Leading I ve been a breeder with Monsanto for over 20 years. My team explores ways to drive soybean yields through better placement and variable rate planting. Our goal is to work closely with Monsanto Agronomists and Technology Development Representatives and provide growers the best solutions and genetics for their fields. The soybean plant health initiatives for Indiana include providing growers with more choices for those fields in which the more commonly deployed genes for Phytophthora Root Rot and Soybean Cyst Nematode are less effective. 12 Industry-Leading Yield potential and yield stability are the major concerns for Nebraska farmers who may face drought and wet years. Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) is a physiological disease of concern. Testing nurseries exposed products to IDC for at least two years in a row to test variety tolerance before releasing to local growers. Phytophthora Root Rot and Soybean Cyst Nematode are other disease traits that I am working on. Lines are screened using both molecular markers and biological assays to assess if new lines offer more robust tolerance or resistance to these diseases. 14 Industry-Leading I have been breeding soybeans for over 25 years for the Asgrow brand and am based at a breeding site in Minnesota. Farmers in Minnesota want the highest-yielding soybean products in the business along with resistance to Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN). From western Minnesota up through the Red River Valley, they are also looking for soybean products that can handle high ph soils that may not support a typical soybean product. We have bred for both SCN and iron deficiency chlorosis for the past 25 years under my direction. In fact, our program has been 100% SCN-resistant for the past eight to nine years. In addition, my team has worked to incorporate dicamba tolerance into soybean products targeted for the upper Midwest. 16 Industry-Leading I have been breeding soybeans for the past six years in Wisconsin. While yield is the first priority, defensive traits have always been a huge concern for Wisconsin farmers. They have to deal with diseases such as white mold, Phytophthora Root Rot and brown stem rot almost every season. White mold in particular can be a challenging issue because resistance to the disease does not exist, and breeders must select for white mold tolerance. We are constantly introducing new sources of resistance to continue to make these trait packages as strong as they can be.
