2 A HISTORY OF HELPING FARMERS SUCCEED In 1901, Lawrence and Anna Beck purchased 80 acres of land near the small town of Atlanta, Indiana. Over the next 20 years, they worked to raise their two children, Dorthia and Francis, and build their farm while enduring the First World War and the Great Depression. Then, in 1937, there was the historic moment when Lawrence and his son, Francis, each planted three acres of hybrid parent seed corn from the Purdue University Botany Department, marking the first historic crop of Beck s Superior Hybrids. Although a lot has changed since then, a few things have remained the same. We remain true to our heritage, one built on faith, fortitude, and the innovation of our family and family of employees. Our true point of uniqueness, however, is not that we are family-owned, but that we continue to put farmers first.
