1 The Lab opening ceremony and an International Conference on Organic Farming (ICOF-2015) is going to organize by Kathmandu University department of Biotechnology on 20 th August 2015 in support from KOICA Nepal and CBNU South Korea on the premises of Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel Kavre, Nepal. The project is aimed for 2 academic years ( ) and has following characters. 1. Project Title: APPA OF Nepal; Academic Partnership Project for Advanced Organic Farming in Nepal. This project is one of the academic partnership programs between Nepal and Korea and funded by KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency). Korean partner, Chonbuk National University (CBNU) provides finance, manpower, and technology to enhance the educational and research capability of Kathmandu University in organic farming sector. 2. Project Location: Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre, P.O.Box. 6250, Kathmandu, Nepal 3. Beneficiaries: - Kathmandu University (KU) - Kathmandu university faculty members - Kathmandu university students - Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) - Nepal farmers 4. Project Duration: Jan Dec st year: Jan Dec nd year: Jan Dec Purpose: To increase the agricultural productivity in Nepal, CBNU-KU partners will enhance the education and research capability in organic farming areas of Kathmandu University. CBNU-KU will establish the education systems for organic farming experts, construct the infrastructure for R & D of organic farming technology, bolster the NARC guidance for farmers, enhance the networking among farmers, produce beneficial outputs and advertise the tangible outcome. - Activity 1: After establishing the partnership with Dept. of Biotechnology in Kathmandu University located in Nepal, CBNU-KU will develop the programs for education, technical training of organic farming. Counseling - Activity 2: CBNU will establish the advanced laboratory/education infrastructure in KU. Supporting instruments or equipment Providing lecture for lab courses Developing experimental field - Activity 3: CBNU will enhance the ability of NARC officials in organic farming sectors, implant the collaborative consortium to guide/teach farmers, and carry the stable and sustainable research/practice/dissemination systems of organic farming. Enhancing capability of local governmental research stations (NARC). Launching the collaborative research program among CBNU, KU and NARC. Implanting consortium which can mediate technical transfer to local farms

The focus has now broadened to promoting sustainable development, strengthening partnerships with developing partners, and enhancing the local ownership of beneficiaries. Additional, global concerns such as the environment, poverty reduction, and gender mainstreaming, have gained significant importance in the international community. CBNU (Chonbuk National University, Korea) CBNU is a national university located in Jeonju, Korea. It was founded in 1947 and now manages approximately 30,000 students and 2,000 faculty and staff members with various educational, research and support facilities. The university recognizes its mission as a higher teaching, learning, researching institution that should help cultivate leadership to foster and preserve the equal opportunity for all members of international society. Regarding agricultural sector, the college of Agricultural Life Science and the college of Environmental & Bioresource Sciences, acquired advanced scientists as faculty members and the state-of-art research infrastructures and facilities. Especially, those colleges obtained the specialized expertise on the efficient agronomical approaches to mitigate the environmental pollution and increase crop yield. The role of CBNU in APPA OF Nepal CBNU faculty members participated in APPA OF Nepal will assist Kathmandu University to enhance its capability to educate the prospective graduate students majoring in organic farming technology. In addition, CBNU will mediate the establishment of cooperative organization composed of CBNU, NARC, and KU and put efforts to improve the crop productivity of local farmers by applying the relevant technology and resources.

3 The expectation effects of APPA OF Nepal - Cultivation of the organic farming experts - Production and development of organic agricultural resources and materials. e.g. biopesticides and biofertilizers - Increase crop productivity and income of local farmers to mitigate the poverty - Prevention environmental pollution caused by chemicals - Enhance the university capability to educate students and perform researches

4 Message from Vice Chancellor Dear Participants, I am very pleased that Kathmandu University is organizing this International Conference on Organic Farming (ICOF-15) jointly with Chonbuk National University, South Korea, as a means of academic partnership which is supported by KOICA. During this international conference, experts in organic farming from South Korea and Nepal will gather in Kathmandu, followed by special lectures on the importance of organic farming. This is the first International conference based on academic partnership program among Kathmandu University, Nepal Agricultural Research Council, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and Chonbuk National University. Now, agriculture is facing a big challenge because of the applications of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers in Nepal. Under these circumstances, I believe that this conference will be useful for the Nepalese researchers and farmers to understand the importance of the organic farming. Also, I hope that this conference will enhance mutual understanding and friendship between Nepalese and Korean researchers, which will pave the way to boost research collaboration between these two countries. I am looking forward to meet you all at ICOF-15 at Kathmandu, Nepal on August 20, I would like to extend my special thanks to all the members of APPA program and committee members of ICOF-15 for your valuable contributions. Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha Vice Chancellor Kathmandu University
