1 Title PI Co-Researchers Purpose Project Summary Improving Mungbean productivity for nutritional diversification, income and food security in Uganda [Phase II] Herbert Talwana (PhD) Department of Agricultural Production, School of Agricultural Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Makerere University P. O. Box 7062 Kampala Uganda Tel.: Office ; Mobile ; Skype name: talwana Moses Biruma National Agricultural Research Organizationn-National Semi-Arid Research Resources Institute. P. O Box Soroti, Uganda. mosesbiruma@gmail.com Tel: Frank Kagoda NARO - Buginyanya ZARDI Ikulwe Satellite Station. P. O. Box 1356, Mbale Tel ; ; fkagoda@gmail.com The project aims at providing and promoting guidelines for improved mungbean production and productivity as a crop for nutritional diversification, income and food security in Uganda. The proposed project builds on a previous RUFORUM grant (RU2010GRG16) which supported mungbean value chain analysis to identify the key constraints to production, consumption and marketing as perceived by farmers; and assembling and characterizing mungbean germplasm to identify and quantify genetic diversity, and potential for cross-combinations in their breeding. The current project will identify and release genotypes with stable performance, early and synchronous maturity, resistance to Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) and other diseases, and tolerance to insect-pests, and adapted to smallholder cropping systems. The proposed project will continue to contribute to national research capacity development through graduate training; and improving the capacity of School of Agricultural Sciences Makerere University to produce high quality and innovative training, research and outreach activities that can contribute to agricultural 1
