This work plan is a living document that is designed to assist the committee to focus on the policy direction of the CSTA and to achieve the strategic goals supported by the Board of Directors. Alberta Fusarium Management Plan A Fusarium management plan in Alberta that is based in science and that gives Alberta farmers access to quality seed. / Trent Whiting At CSTA s request, a scientific review was conducted and recommendations were made. The recommendations have been considered by the Management. However, Alberta continues to operate under a zero-tolerance policy. AB government indicated that they intend to review with a 2018 timeline. UPDATED JULY 2017: In February 2017, the Alberta Government reached out to industry to signal that they were interested in exploring a new policy on fusarium. CSTA has been working with a number of members and Alberta grower groups to develop a position on a new policy on fusarium. A letter was sent to the Alberta Agriculture Minister in June and an update will be given to this committee. 44

2 CSTA Oilseeds, Pulses and Western Cereals Variety Registration and Wheat Classes That the relationship between variety registration and Grain Commission wheat classes be clarified. A clear, predictable, effective and efficient variety registration system. / Erin Armstrong CSTA requested this as part of our input to the CGC s consultations on wheat class amendments. CSTA provided input to CFIA related to their proposed Model Operating Procedures. Continue to work with the value chain and the CFIA and CGC to clarify the relationship between variety registration and wheat classification. Continue to advocate for a clear, predictable variety registration wheat classification system. UPDATED JULY 2017: Cereals Canada has been invited to provide an update on their work to this committee and a presentation will also be given to the Corn, Soybeans and Eastern Cereals from both Cereals Canada and the Canada Grain Commission. Canola Varietal Purity An amendment to AOSCA standards to bring varietal purity standards for canola more in line with other purity standards (e.g. hybridity). Medium/ Medium Kevin McNaughton Proposals for varietal purity standard amendments have been made to CFIA and the Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA), with negative results. UPDATED JULY 2017: Hybrid Canola Companies have had initial discussions with Canola Council of Canada. An update will be given by the Hybrid Canola Sub-. 45

3 CSTA Oilseeds, Pulses and Western Cereals Value Creation A system that allows plant breeders to capture value from the value chain for investment in plant breeding and variety development. / Erin Armstrong, Ron Weik, Lorena Pahl CSTA facilitated a value chain process that developed a concept. It was informally presented to AAFC and to the Grains Roundtable in April CSTA policy outlines its requirements for any value capture system, but is not specific to a model. UPDATED JULY 2017: A series of consultations on value creation were held in the spring of 2017 and an update will be given by the co-chair of the value creation working group. Seed Bag Collection and Disposal There is a cost-effective and efficient system in place for the collection and safe disposal of empty seed bags. Medium/ Medium CleanFARMS now has a permanent seed and pesticide bag collection program in Eastern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. UPDATED JULY 2017: CleanFarms did some exploratory work regarding a pilot program for Western Canada but at this point do not have a viable disposal site. CSTA will continue to monitor and provide support as needed. 46
