2 Iraqi Food Sector A Consumer Market of Significant Importance in the Region With agricultural production in decline, food imports have become critical in Iraq. Iraq produces only 20% of its food and agricultural product needs and relies on imported products to supply the rest 80%. State-owned companies channeling imported foodstuffs to consumers have in the process become the major operators in the Iraqi food sector. The Iraqi Government imports and markets basic food items such as sugar, rice, wheat, diary, vegetable oil, infant formula and other products. Iraq s food self-sufficiency rate will continue to decrease in tandem with its population growing at an estimated rate of 2.3% per annum to surpass 40 million within a decade.
