1 EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT Tuesday 17th July 46 th Great July Fair EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD

2 A slightly reduced entry of Suffolk cross older ewes got the sale off to a good start and were topped by a stand out run of Suffolk x Cheviot Mule 6T ewes from Peter, Gwyneth & David Morris of Brill, Buckinghamshire that rose to 154, 148 & 136 as their Suffolk x Mules of the same age sold at 137 & 122. Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport sold Suffolk x Mule 4/6T ewes well at 132 & 116 as well as two pens of FM s at 112. Alan & Lisa Johns of Slapton dispersed their flock with the youngest of their consignment reaching 130, a price matched by Rob & Caroline Mole of Chearsley, Buckinghamshire 6T age Suffolk cross Mules. The general run of older ewes were 5 either side of 100 and the 509 averaged A large crowd of entirely farmer buyers, including a few fresh faces from South Wales and as far north as Anglesey ensured that quality sheep sold well, often ahead of vendors expectations and in front of last year s prices. The straight medium type sheep were a little less on the year as traditional bulk buyers of this price range were either switched off or at least restricted by the distinct lack of keep. Furthermore, a surprisingly high number of third quality shearlings on offer were a difficult trade with little interest in the bottom end types. The shearlings in general looked well, with only a few having had supplementary feeding, although some were showing signs of the dry weather and lacked the bloom of previous years. Champion honours went to 46 TH GREAT JULY FAIR BREEDING SHEEP SALE 10AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer SUFFOLK X OLDER EWES 2791 SUFFOLK X SHEARLING EWES Leading Suffolk x Mule prices as below: (change on year) 202 (+38) from MA Johnson Ltd, Bridport to 150 (+5) & av. 144 (+4) 76 (-22) from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd, Sherborne to 150 (+24) & av. 141 (+21) 53 (-5) from DP & MG White, Axminster to 149 (-12) & av. 147 (+9) 102 (-24) from S Rogers, Barnstaple to 148 (+12) & av. 143 (+9) 100 (+2) from R Chanin, Exeter to 148 (+6) & av. 137 (+3) 81 (+21) from MJ Tucker, Umberleigh to 144 (+13) & av. 138 (+10) 400 (-10) from RJ Rottenbury, Crediton to 141 (-24) & av. 130 (-7) 90 (-10) from A & L Gillard, Exeter to 140 (+4) & av. 131 (+5) 63 (-121) from FM & DM Hockridge, Crediton to 136 (+11) & av. 128 (+9) 195 from RJ Coward, Mere to 131 & av (-22) from P Smerdon, Ashburton to 130 (~) & av. 128 (+2) 105 (-24) from BV & SM Johnson, Bridport to 123 (-11) & av. 121 (-10) 80 (-40) from H & M Thorne, Umberleigh to 123 (-5) & av. 120 (-5) Mark & Henry Johnson and family of Bridport with a tremendous run of 200 shearlings that saw the first prize pen sell at 150 to the judge Mr Huw Leyshon of Skewen, South Wales to whom we extend our thanks. The Johnsons sold further pens at 148, 145, 144 (x2) and 143 to average of all 200, well done to them. Second prize in the show went to Robert & Tom Chanin of Thorverton who set the trade as second vendor in and reached 148 for the ticketed pen and others to 138, again purchased by the judge. Third prize was awarded to last years winner, Roger Rottenbury of Black Dog and sold at 141 to Jack Enticott of Wellington, whilst Roger had further pens at 140, 135 (x2), 134 (x2) ect. Also reaching 150 were two strong pens from Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne, proving that trade for the better end stayed strong throughout the whole sale. Derek White & family of Axminster sold strong Suffolk x Mules at 149 as well as Suffolk x Scotch Half Breds at 148 and 148 was also achieved by the best of a fine run from Stuart Rogers of Landkey who had others at 144, 143 & 142. The overall average levelled at being exactly 2 less than last year, however last year there wasn t a single pen under 117 and this year there more than 600 sold between 88 and 112, taking these out of the average would put the average just over the 128 mark with less than a dozen pens unsold. 397 OLDER EWES A much reduced number of older ewes were a very variable trade. A pair of purebred Suffolk 4T s provided the days top price of 215 when they sold to L White of Calverleigh, whilst others from the same home were 82 to 100. Pure Charollais older ewes to 130 for Roy Endacott of Spreyton and to 120 for Harold Keast of Crediton, 120 also for Dorset s from Gordon White of Crediton who sold others at 118. Texel x Mule 4T ewes from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton reached 130 & 107, the Morris family of Brill saw their annual consignment of Cheviot Mule 6T s sell to 120, 117, 116 (x2) & 115 and Messrs Potticks Pigs sold their best three pens of Scotch Half Bred FM ewes at OTHER NATIVE SHEARLING EWES Consisting of mainly Lleyns these topped at 132 & 120 for John & Jean Blackler of Harbertonford and 120 also for both Graham Chorley of Chard and DF & AM Burrough of Axminster. 457 MULE SHEARLING EWES As seems to be the case with all breeding sheep at present, the best sold well whilst second quality and leaner types proved harder to cash. A fantastic run of 100 lovely dark headed sorts from Cliff & Anne Williams of Bampton saw their first pen make 155 and following nine pens all sold at 148. David & Sylvia Grant of Morchard Bishop made 140, 137 (x2) & 136 and Jon & Heln Putt of Tedburn St Mary realised 139 of their best. Other nice NC Mules at 135 & 130 (x2) for Peter Tucker of Cadeleigh, Mashams to 126 (x3) for Phil Smerdon of Ashburton and Exmoor Mules to 120 for James Webber of Crediton. A few bottom end were 100 to 112 and the overall average stood at , up all but 8 on the year.

3 944 CONTINENTAL SHEARLING EWES The section seeing the largest increase on the year met the stickiest trade. A few pens of pure bred shearlings sold to 200 for Charollais and 180 for Texels, both from the Quick family of Crediton. More Charollais shearlings at 140 for Roy Endacott and purebred Beltex s reached 135 for Witham Vale Farm of Frome. Almost twice the number of Texel x mules compared with last year and fewer men to buy them resulted in the one disappointing trade of the day given the great quality forward. Mark & Henry Johnson got the best of theirs away at 135 (x6) including the First prize pen of other breed shearlings and 130 (x9), Brian & Ian Johnson of Bridport sold to 133 (x4), Peter Gillard of Tedburn St Mary had four pens at 130 and Richard Coward of Mere sold his best pen, that were awarded Second prize in the show at 128. Average DORSET & DORSET X SHEARLING EWES The Dorset section was topped by two pens of strong October born ewe lambs from David & Adrian Cole of Bradninch that reached 145 apeice. Purebred shearlings sold at 128 for BA Pugsley of Barnstaple and 128 (x2) & 126 for MJ & DM Lake of South Molton. Top price Dorset x Mules went to the third prize pen of other breed shearlings and reached 142 for Mark & Henry Johnson who sold others at 141 (x2) & 130 (x3), Richard Brooks of Bridport reached 133 (x5) for his and Brian & Ian Johnson claimed 132 (x2) for theirs. Overall average RAMS Auctioneers: Mark Davis & Ian Caunter A massive entry of rams for the Great July Fair saw a very selective trade where supply certainly outstripped demand! Quality rams however sold well and the West Country Suffolk Sheep Association show and sale saw the Overall Show Champion top the trade at 850gns for a super shearling from Messrs HC Derryman & Son of Yarcombe who sold others at 550gns three times! Other Suffolk shearlings to 500gns for Mike Waycott of Ashburton and Gordon & Gill White of Crediton. Other breeds saw a top of 800gns for a tremendous Charollais x ram lamb from Robert & Pauline Hopper of Tiverton. A cracking run of Charollais shearlings from Messrs EW Quick & Sons of Crediton topped at 650gns with others to 620gns (x2), 480gns (x2) & 450gns. Others to 580gns & 480gns for Harold Keast & Partners of Crediton, 520gns for Gerald Burrough of Dunkeswell and 500gns for Brain Cornish of Tiverton. Beltex shearlings to 540gns from Margaret Heard of Wiveliscombe and 500gns three times for Louise Moorhouse of Crockernwell. Texel shearlings to 500gns for Gwen Renfree of Liskeard with others to 420gns for David Broad of Tintagel and Chartex rams to 450gns for Messrs EW Quick & Sons. Poll Dorset shearlings sold to 400gns for David & Richard Rossiter of Kingsbridge. My personal thanks and congratulations to all vendors for a fantastic show of sheep given the current circumstances. Also a big thank you to all drovers, clerks, card runners and any farmers that pitched in to help with the running of the sale. Less than 10% of the sheep forward were unsold and one with another, all 5948 ewes and shearlings averaged a tremendous overall, down just 2.65 on last year. 7 Rural Reflection July 2018 Combines have started rolling across the countryside as this year s tremendous weather has brought harvesting perhaps two weeks forward compared to other years. Generally the rule of thumb back in the South Hams, is that Winter Barley is rarely completed before Totnes Show, often being the last weekend in July. Reports so far are slightly disappointing, with yields below the 3 tonne an acre mark and straw not as thick as first thought. On a positive note for those arable farmers, prices for both look to remain high throughout Hot weather continues to be the topic of conversation with many livestock farmers having to feed supplementary silage as the extreme temperatures have decimated grassland across the country. The question lies with what weather we require for the next six weeks as arable crops have now past the benefit of receiving a good drink, and how sunny days make harvest so much easier. This spring has seen Kivells favoured on a number of sales concerning farms and land throughout Devon and Cornwall, with all offices recently launching a number of wonderful farms or country homes, which have received good interest. Concerns over Brexit and the land market haven t seemed to have impacted on land values as much as perhaps first thought, with latest figures suggesting average land values remaining stable only dropping 0.6% in the last six months across GB. Going forward personally I feel land values will continue to hold their own and in particular we will see an ever increasing interest for farms with a large selection of incomes streams with buyers further afield looking to invest or relocate to the southwest. Furthermore with regards to those less commercial holdings often in need of repair we are seeing neighbouring parties often contesting with the intention of expanding what is currently already owned. If you are considering the sale of your property and require advice together with a market appraisal, please get in touch with your nearest office where one of the team will be delighted to help. Clients continue to get in contact with a variety of different matters, but recently, the importance of having an agent to deal with Compensation matters against an acquiring or governing body couldn t have been made clearer. In this case I was asked to attend a site meeting whereby a company were looking to take access onto a client s land for a period of 12 months and where looking to do so at little cost. After some time negotiating we have agreed on a fair licence fee for the client, covering all damages and losses incurred, agent fees are covered by the said company as are legal fees. We see on so many occasions in this profession companies intending to bulldoze their way in onto client s land, to complete a job that will benefit them. It s your land and you re entitled to compensation! Going back to the arable sector and last month saw Kivells of Exeter conduct what was a very successful standing straw sale. You will have seen in the press from other firms alike that standing straw across the southwest has doubled in price from last year, following the high prices sold on the lorry back in the start of this year. Kicking off the first sale in this part of the country, Kivells achieved the following: 136 acres of winter barley averaged , 496 acres of winter wheat averaged 97.63, 313 acres of winter oats averaged and 28 acres of spring barley averaged

8 The summer of 2018 is proving to be a busy time for farm machinery sales with both the Holsworthy and Exeter team conducting a number of sales across Devon and Cornwall. Last month saw the Exeter team conduct the farm machinery sale at Pollardscombe Farm, Slapton. Pollardscombe Farm, being a good example of what our firm can undertake for you the client, from selling the livestock, the farm, and the machinery. Good prices were achieved throughout with a large attendance of both buyers and onlookers enjoying the June sunshine. Our next sale in the South Hams takes place on the 14 th of July on behalf of Messrs HC Dayment & Son at Purston Barton, Blackawton. In the meantime the show season is in full swing and Kivells will be soon attending Launceston, Mid Devon, Honiton and Okehampton Show, we look forward to seeing you there.
