Recently, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) released U.S. red meat trade data for November According to the data, during November, U.S. exports of beef and veal cuts and beef variety meats equaled 96,347 MT. This was down 12.3 percent from the previous month and was down 5.5 percent from November Specifically, exports of fresh, chilled beef totaled 28,231 MT, which was 4.0 percent less than the previous month and was 11.3 percent less than November Exports of frozen beef totaled 36,766 MT, which was 13.7 percent less than the previous month but was 1.7 percent more than November During November, the U.S. exported 27,563 MT of beef variety meats, which was 17.4 percent lower than the previous month and was 8.0 percent lower than November Year-to-date beef variety meat exports totaled 308,501 MT, 5.1 percent higher than a year ago. Beef exports to Japan during November equaled 18,449 MT. This was down 18.3 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date beef exports to Japan were up 2.8 percent over a year ago, totaling 225,327 MT. Japan was the main U.S. beef export market with 20.6 percent of the total. During November, U.S. beef exports to Mexico fell 13.5 percent from the previous month to 18,969 MT. Total year-to-date beef exports to Mexico were 14.2 percent more than last year, amounting to 219,710 MT. U.S. beef exports to Hong Kong during November totaled 14,233 MT, which was down 15.2 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date beef exports to Hong Kong equaled 137,436 MT, 19.6 percent more than a year ago. Overall, U.S. total year-to-date beef and veal and beef variety meat exports equaled 1,096,481 MT, 1.9 percent above the same period a year ago. During November, U.S. exports of pork cuts and pork variety meats equaled 164,647 MT. This was down 7.6 percent from the previous month and was down 13.1 percent from November More specifically, fresh, chilled pork exports totaled 58,237 MT, which was 6.8 percent lower than the previous month and was 9.0 percent lower than November Frozen pork exports totaled 51,928 MT, which was 6.0 percent lower than the previous month and was 27.3 percent lower than November U.S. pork variety meat exports during November fell 17.0 percent from October to 39,271 MT. However, this was up 6.6 percent over November Year-to-date pork variety meat exports totaled 437,385 MT, which was 10.4 percent more than a year ago. During November, the U.S. exported 52,812 MT of pork to Mexico. Total year-to-date pork exports to Mexico were 10.4 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 605,079 MT. Mexico was the main pork export market for the U.S. with 31.0 percent of the total. Pork export s to Japan during November fell 13.0 percent from the previous month to 34,331 MT. Year-to-date pork exports to Japan totaled 432,213 MT, 10.8 percent more than last year. During November, the U.S. exported 17,825 MT of pork to Canada. This was 7.3 percent higher than the previous month. Year-to-date pork exports to Canada were 8.9 percent lower than last year, totaling 190,525 MT. Overall, U.S. total year-to-date exports of pork cuts and pork variety meats equaled 1,954,106 MT, which was 2.0 percent above the same period a year ago.

However, this was 55.2 percent higher than November Specifically, fresh, chilled beef imports totaled 32,966 MT, which was down 1.7 percent from the previous month but was up 29.0 percent over November Frozen beef imports totaled 51,008 MT, which was 8.6 percent lower than the previous month but was 85.3 percent higher than November Beef imports from Australia during November equaled 39,233 MT, which was down 11.9 percent from October. Total year-to-date beef imports from Australia were 69.6 percent more than last year, amounting to 321,934 MT. Australia was the largest provider of beef to the U.S. with 36.1 percent of the total. During November, the U.S. imported 19,370 MT of beef from Canada, which was up 8.2percent over the previous month. Beef imports from New Zealand during November fell 11.3 percent from the previous month to 7,858 MT. Year-to-date beef imports from New Zealand equaled 181,407 MT, 10.2 percent more than last year. During November, the U.S. imported 8,765 MT of beef from Mexico. This was 13.5 percent less than the previous month. Total year-to-date beef imports from Mexico were 19.8 percent greater than last year, amounting to 104,923 MT. Overall, U.S. total year-to-date beef and veal imports equaled 892,829 MT, 28.1 percent more than the corresponding period a year ago. During November, U.S. pork imports totaled 38,940 MT, which was 18.3 percent less than the previous month but was 11.1 percent more than November More specifically, imports of fresh, chilled pork equaled 25,470 MT, which was down 21.5 percent from the previous month but was up 8.0 percent over November Imports of frozen pork equaled 9,628 MT, which was down 14.5 percent from the previous month but was up 21.6 percent over November U.S. pork imports from Canada during November totaled 31,657 MT, which was 20.8 percent lower than October. Total yearto-date pork imports from Canada equaled 306,233 MT, 8.0 percent more than last year. Canada was the main supplier of pork to the U.S. with 77.9 percent of the total imports. During November, pork imports from Denmark totaled 2,004 MT, which was down 31.7 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date pork imports from Denmark totaled 31,377 MT, 27.6 percent higher than last year. Overall, U.S. total year-to-date pork imports equaled 393,324 MT, which was 13.9 percent more than the same period a year ago. Additional U.S. trade data is available on the FAS website at North America According to data from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), as reported by the USDA Livestock, Poultry and Grain Market News (LPGMN), during 2014, U.S. imports of feeder cattle from Canada totaled 441,942 head. This was 40.0 percent greater than the previous year due to strong demand. Imports of slaughter steers and heifers from Canada equaled 387,819 head, which was 11.1 percent higher than a year ago. During 2014, slaughter cow and bull imports were 8.2 percent less than 2013, totaling 351,718 head. Imports of feeder pigs from Canada during 2014 equaled 3,933,309 head, 5.6 percent less than a year ago. Slaughter hog imports were up 3.1 percent over the previous year, totaling 849,220 head. Additionally, according to recent data from USDA LPGMN, during 2014, the U.S. imported 1,084,981 head of feeder cattle from Mexico. Placements weighing 600 to 699 pounds equaled 17,056 head, which was 9.7 percent less than last year. Placements of feeder cattle weighing 700 to 799 pounds totaled 13,705 head, 13.4 percent lower than last year. Finally, placements of feeder cattle weighing more than 800 pounds were down 14.3 percent from a year ago, totaling 24,864 head. Meanwhile, during December, Canada s fed cattle marketings rose 17.3 percent over one year ago to 114,986 head. This was slightly higher than the five year average. To obtain the complete report, go to the CanFax website at Japan s Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation (ALIC) recently released Japan s beef and pork import statistics for November According to the data, during November, Japan imported 41,214 MT of beef, which was down 15.5 percent from October and was down 16.0 percent from November More specifically, frozen beef imports equaled 23,505 MT, which was 14.3 percent lower than the previous month and was 28.0 percent lower than November Fresh, chilled beef imports equaled 17,691 MT, which was 17.0 percent lower than the previous month but was 7.9 percent higher than November During November, Japan s beef imports from Australia fell 9.0 percent from the previous month and 12.6 percent from November 2013 to 23,187 MT. Year-to-date beef imports from Australia totaled 261,741 MT, which was a little lower than last year. Australia was the main source for Japan s beef imports with 54.0 percent of the total. Beef imports from the U.S. during November equaled 14,575 MT. This was 23.1 percent lower than the previous month and was 21.0 percent lower than a year ago. Total year-to-date beef imports from the U.S. were 2.0 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 177,482 MT. Beef imports from New Zealand during November fell 16.0 percent from the previous month to 1,326 MT. Also, this was 1.2 percent less than November Total year-to-date beef imports from New Zealand equaled 22,508 MT, 17.5percent less than a year ago. Overall, Japan s total year-to-date beef imports were 2.2 percent below the same period a year ago, amounting to 484,912 MT. Japan s beef marketings during October totaled 75,241 MT, which was 1.2 percent more than the previous month and was 3.4 percent more than a year ago. Marketings of imported beef equaled 44,820 MT, 6.0 percent higher than last year. Marketings of domestic beef were down slightly from a year ago, amounting to 30,421 MT. At the end of October, Japan s beef stocks totaled 134,805 MT, which was up 3.9 percent over the previous month and was up 1.0 percent over a year ago. Stocks of imported beef equaled 120,854 MT, which was slightly higher than a year ago. Stocks of domestic beef were 3.3 percent more than last year, amounting to 13,951 MT.

4 International Meat Review, January 22, 2015 Page 4 Pacific Rim (continued) Japan s pork imports during November totaled 53,404 MT, which was 46.5 percent less than the previous month and was 13.6 percent less than November Specifically, frozen pork imports equaled 31,115 MT, which was 56.1 percent lower than the previous month and was 16.9 percent lower than November Fresh, chilled pork imports equaled 22,289 MT, which was 23.1 percent lower than the previous month and was 8.6 percent lower than November During November, Japan s pork imports from the U.S. fell 33.2 percent from October and 15.4 percent from November 2013 to 18,754 MT. Year-to-date pork imports from the U.S. totaled 255,828 MT, slightly lower than a year ago. The U.S. was the primary source for Japan s pork imports with 33.1 percent of the total. This was down 45.8 percent from the previous month and was down 16.9 percent from November Year-to-date pork imports from Canada were 4.4 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 135,112 MT. Pork imports from Denmark during November equaled 7,734 MT, which was 61.8 percent less than the previous month and was 27.6 percent less than November Year-to-date pork imports from Denmark totaled 129,388 MT, 23.3 percent above last year. Overall, Japan s total year-to-date pork imports equaled 772,088 MT, which was 14.4 percent more than the corresponding period a year ago. Japan s pork marketings during October equaled 169,921 MT. This was up 26.7 percent over the previous month and was up 12.8 percent over a year ago. Imported pork marketings were 35.8 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 91,226 MT. Domestic pork marketings totaled 78,695 MT, which was 5.7 percent less than last year. At the end of October, Japan s pork stocks equaled 220,552 MT, which was up 3.9 percent over the previous month and was up 36.5 percent over a year ago. Stocks of imported pork totaled 200,444 MT, 42.0 percent more than last year. Domestic pork stocks equaled 20,108 MT, 1.1 percent lower than last year.
