SRP building blocks in promoting sustainability Goal: 1 million farmers adopt climate-smart best practice Supply chain governance Standard Incentive mechanisms Assurance & communication Public sector engagement Public regulation & support policies Business case Farm level Supply chain level Ecosystem services Capacity building Decision-making tools Training modules Outreach models Knowledge hub Awareness raising Proxies / levels Monitoring, evaluation & learning Performance measurement Impact measurement SRP Standard SRP Performance Indicator

Sustainability Standard to promote sustainable rice cultivation globally Profitability net income from rice, market access Productivity Economic sustainability 46 requirements, and more than 160 recommended practices Improve livelihood of SHF through capacity building & group management system Pre-planting 11% Farm management 7% Labor Rights 16% Health & safety 14% SRP Standard Harvest & postharvest 16% Pest management 11% Water Use 11% Nutrient management 11% Efficient nutrient management Organic fertilizer Selection & use of inorganic fertilizer Integrated Pest Management principle (IPM) Workers Healthy & Safety, Labour Rights, Child labor, Women s empowerment Land conversion, Land levelling Safe soil from heavy metal & salinity GHG emission

Performance Indicator to measure the impact of sustainable practices Environmental Sustainability PI 5: Water use efficiency PI 6: Nutrient use efficiency N PI 7: Nutrient use efficiency P PI 8: Pesticide use efficiency PI 9: GHG emissions SRP Standard Economic Sustainability Social Sustainability PI 1: Profitability net income from rice PI 2: Labor profitability PI 3: Productivity grain yield PI 4: Food safety PI 10: Health & safety PI 11: Child labor PI 12: Women s empowerment

SRP Standard and Indicators Measure the sustainability of any rice system SRP data collection tools

How do we integrate SRP tools? - SRP as sustainable rice cultivation framework tool to assess sustainable rice cultivation improvement (SRP standard new farming technology) - Localize - build up from the local wisdoms and available resources Participatory assessment with farmers - Create incentive for farmers - Management system of farmers Public partner in respective countries Private partner Farmers

Where does BRIA lessons learnt can contribute towards the SRP building blocks? Goal: 1 million farmers adopt climate-smart best practice Supply chain governance Standard Incentive mechanisms Assurance & communication Public sector engagement Public regulation & support policies Business case Farm level Supply chain level Ecosystem services Capacity building Decision-making tools Training modules Outreach models Knowledge hub Awareness raising Proxies / levels Monitoring, evaluation & learning Performance measurement (performance Indicator) Impact measurement Legend: Readily available by SRP Lessons learnt from BRIA SRP pilot testing & other GIZ rice related projects

BRIA Training Materials vs. SRP standard BRIA training materials have covered 75% 85 % of SRP standard topics SRP BRIA VN BRIA TH Modernizing Rice Farming Concept Good Agriculture Practices Labour Sustainable Value Chain Safety & Stewardship Farmer Grop Empowerment BRIA PH BRIA ID

ISSUE: How to assure the adoption of the Standard? Assurance System:

Certification GIZ approach Model 1 SRP standard as benchmarking tool Model 2 SRP standard as framework to enhance sustainable practices adoption Model 3 Farmers management for sustainable farming Model 4 SRP standard to upgrade value chain To asses the sustainability practices of farmers for risk assessment tool To assess the current training / policy on sustainable rice practices Localize the SRP standard for for farmers capacity building to improve sustainable production Farmer capacity building on Farm Management (data base, farmer group, self risk assessment, etc.) Enable farmers to conduct peer review of their own farms & the neighbouring farms (PGS/ ICS/IMS) Market Linkages - traceability Engagement with miller & trader Verification system applied follow the business model agreed with the buyer (Impact assessment to create market value) ID Farmers assessment (Policy Recommendation) PH Farmer Assessment Policy Recommendation TH Market linkages with 3 rd party verification VN Policy Recommendation through Rice Task Force Market linkages (2018) Farmer Assessment Rice NAMA framework Market linkages (2018) (2018)

Farmer Survey in Indonesia Model 1 SRP standard as benchmarking tool Target farmers - 1,202 BRIA farmers in Serdang Bedagai, Langkat, and Deli Serdang district - With the probability sampling method with Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling, around 245 farmers will be selected to represent the target group Methodology - Interviews with farmers carried out by following the SRP Standard data collection & assessment tools Time Frame - Field study and data assessment : August Sept 16 Result - The farmers have complied with 70.9% on average towards SRP standard - Topics that needs to be improved: Farm Management, Pre Planting, Nutrient Management, and Harvest and Post Harvest

Pilot testing in Thailand Model 4 SRP standard to upgrade value chain Target group: Bua Ngam CRC Klang CRC TOTAL 32 farmers 45 farmers 77 farmers 849 rai 546 rai 1,385 rai Variety: Hommali Rice produced in Northeast Thailand Rice Quality: GMP & Uniformed rice (other quality requirements to be specified) Production: Sustainably produced as recommended by RD/DoAE/BRIA TH Period : main crop season 2016 (April / May Dec 16) Market linkage arrangement Guaranteed buying by Olam TH according to the agreed annual target through the participating local rice millers Voluntary selling by farmers

Pilot testing in Thailand Result 2016 The audit verified that 28 farmers of Bua Ngam CRC, and 43 farmers of Klang CRC can be considered as working towards sustainability. The independent 3 rd party assessment also showed that farmer compliance levels averaged 84% against the SRP Standard 400 tonnes of SRP-verified sustainable rice harvested, followed the mass-balance model. Chatthep Chanyam, GIZ BRIA TH

Farmer Survey in the Philippine Model 1 SRP standard as benchmarking tool Target farmers - 68 farmers in Ilo-Ilo, from Pototan (13), Zarraga (9), Leganes (18), San Miguel (28) Methodology - Farmers survey using the SRP standard data collection tool by the extensions - IRRI is contracted to help the extensions in the area to conduct the farmer survey in SRP standard context Time Frame - Field study and data assessment : January 2017 to (dry / wet) Partner agencies Department of Agriculture RFO 6, IRRI, and GIZ Result - Pototan (64.7), Zarraga (71.0), Leganes (66.9), San Miguel (64.1)

SRP testing in Viet Nam BRIA Viet Nam - Support the establishment of National Rice Task Force as national forum to also introduce SRP model national wide Model 1 SRP standard as benchmarking tool - Promote the streamlining of MARD recommendations (standard: Global GAP, EU, 1D-5R, etc.) and also SRP standard to improve the recommendations towards sustainability GIZ SAS Crop Life - Provide IPM training for the Loc Troi SRP pilot testing in Viet Nam Model 4 SRP standard to upgrade value chain

GIZ other contributions Funded the initial sustainable rice cultivation standard development Member of SRP & the Advisory Committee of SRP Member of SRP working groups: 1. Communication, outreach & resource mobilization (SV) 2. Public Sector Engagement (MB) 3. Farmer support, performance measurement & assurance (AD) Share BRIA training materials to SRP Provide technical and advisory support for the improvement of SRP standard & PI SRP standard & Performance Indicator as framework of promotion of sustainable rice cultivation practices in MSVC project other GIZ rice related projects in the pipeline Can we use SRP standard as a framework to assess farmers towards their sustainability?
