12 Policy decision related with organic farming in 2016 India In 2016, Sikkim, India has declared the first Organic State in Asia and perhaps in the world. State of Nagaland is almost entirely organic. India is among the few countries of the world where PGS is recognized and promoted by the government.

14 China The Chinese government put the organic industry into National Plan for the Construction of Ecological Civilization. Chinese organic authority CNCA signed an agreement with New Zealand on mutual recognition of organic certification, which is first bilateral organic certification recognition agreement in China. The State Council of China soon establish Green Products Standard, Certification and Labelling System including organic products towards achieving the national plan.

15 Sri Lanka Govt. of Sri Lanka declared that it would become a Chemical-free nation in the next three years. The Same Nutrition for the Same Price was initiated so that organic food would be available at price similar or comparable to chemical-based products. Dept. of Agriculture in process of establishing a national PGS council.

16 Japan The Tokyo Olympics 2020 remains a strong driver in pushing an organic agenda. Some cities like Fukuoka have identified organic food catering as a location advantage bidding for athlete housing. The city of Kisarazu, a prefecture of Chiba which declared itself as Japan s first organic city. Dec 08 is now declared as the official Organic Day in Japan.

17 Bhutan Launching of the Local Organic Guarantee System (based on PGS and supervised by the Dept of Agriculture) in the domestic market. Endorsement of the framework and guidelines for the biofertilizer and biopesticide supply. Presently two organic products certified nationally (potatoes and garlic)

18 Korea The 4 th Five-year Environmentally- Friendly Promotion Law ( ). Checkoff funds scheme in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has become mandatory for all certified organic farmers. From 2017 the government will only handle the registration and management of the private certification bodies and all organic certification work will be handled by the 65 certification bodies existing currently.

19 Philippines The government budget for the development of the organic sector is mandated at 2 percent of the total agricultural budget. Recently government established more than seventy organic trading posts to provide market access for rural-based organic producers. The Republic Act or Organic Agriculture promotions and Development Law of 2010 is considering to revised.

20 Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan National Organic Agricultural Policy approved in cabinet in Bangladesh. The National Plan for the transition to organic agricultural production in the Kyrgyz Republic (KONAP) has been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture.

29 Conclusions More government assistance and prioritization of OA is required in Asia Economic integration is an important opportunity for OA to benefit as environmental goods and services Emphasis on environmental and social benefits can help for increasing political support for OA OA should be coordinated with environmental and trade-related policies (eco-labeling systems and others) Selection of appropriate products for exports
