Document accompanies instructional video created for retailers regarding shrimp feed. %20Aquaculture%20Feeds%20-%20Retailer%20Briefing%20Final-c488522f.pdf GAA - Salmon Standards Development: Standards Under Revision After Public Comment. 9 March Public comments on the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards for marine salmon farms are currently being reviewed by the salmon technical committee leading to revisions of the BAP standards and guidelines documents through March. GLOBALG.A.P extends scope of aquaculture standard. 7 March The GLOBALG.A.P Aquaculture Standard has been expanded in the new Version 4 to include any hatchery-based farmed species that can be produced under controlled aquatic systems, including the consideration of passive collection of seedlings in the planktonic phase. Also launched is the CFM Standard Version 2.0 to define the guidelines for the use of compound feed at the aquaculture farms and hatcheries. 1

2 SFP tilapia aquaculture improvement programme. March Several eco-labeling schemes and standards are emerging for tilapia. The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership is comparing these schemes by running side-by-side audits on ten different tilapia farms for each scheme. The results will allow stakeholders to see how the schemes stack up against one another. o.pdf GLOBALG.A.P workshop. March To be held in Ho-Chi-Minh-City (Saigon)/Vietnam on May 2011 to present the structure and documentation for a successful cooperation and implementation of the GLOBALG.A.P Framework for pangasius, tilapia, salmonids and shrimp. WWF is working with GLOBALG.A.P to provide training to auditors regarding the aquaculture standards developed by the WWF-initiated Aquaculture Dialogues. March The most recent issue of the FAO Fishery and Aquaculture Statistics Yearbook (compilation of data on capture production, aquaculture production and commodities) is now online. Yearbook contains a booklet with general notes, concepts and classification. 2

3 General news DKSH to introduce MSC mussels through Tesco to UK market. 25 March DKSH, the leading Market Expansion Services Group with a focus on Asia, is the first company to introduce Marine Stewardship Counsel (MSC) certified mussels, an internationally recognized standard for sustainable fishing, to the UK market. sels_through_tesco_to_uk_market.html Alfesca shrimp division Lyons reports strong sales growth. 28 March Lyons Seafoods, the UK-based shrimp supply division of Alfesca, reported sales of over 100 million ( 114 million/$161 million) for its 2010 financial year. Boston Conference Addresses Impending Seafood Shortage. 25 March, 2011 During Averting an Impending Seafood Shortage: Building on the Insights of GOAL 2010, representatives of international aquaculture companies, producer groups and retailers shared strategic views on aquaculture supply and demand around the world. Impending-Seafood-Shortage-33 Stirling s Institute of Aquaculture to lose seventeen staff. 22 March Seventeen staff from Stirling University s Institute of Aquaculture face compulsory redundancy following a decision yesterday by the University Court. SFP Procurement Guide for Gulf of California Shrimp Fishery. 17 March SFP recently released a procurement guide for buyers and importers of Gulf of California shrimp. We created this guide for buyers who want to be assured that the product they are purchasing, either from industrial and/or artisanal vessels, is from a legal and environmentally sustainable fishery. FSA Scotland - Research commissioned - fish and shellfish safety. 16 March Five pieces of research will help gather evidence to improve the hygiene standards of fish and shellfish consumed in Scotland. The areas of research are to: review the processes in place throughout the processing chain that are designed to control the formation of histamine in at-risk fish species; investigate the prevalence of parasitic nematodes in commercially-farmed marine fish in Scotland and to review current farming practices; carry out a survey of biotoxins in Scottish whole king scallops to assess whether current controls are effective in protecting public health; develop specific methods to detect and monitor toxin-producing phytoplankton species and determine their seasonal abundance; and assess the impacts of heavy rainfall and other environmental impacts on E. coli levels in shellfish. SFP urges retailers to fight 'trash fish' in feeds. 15 March SFP is recommending seafood retailers send a written request to their shrimp suppliers asking they identify the species of fish used in aquaculture feeds along with the locations of the fisheries that provided such fish. 3

4 ASC reaction to The Pangasius Lie. 11 March Major industry reform plans in the pipeline. 11 March 2011 A Defra consultation later this year will mark a fork in the road for the shellfish fisheries. Fishing News. New fish industry qualifications spreading their net nationally. 8 March The first dedicated training qualification for fish and shellfish processing to be launched for more than 20 years is now available to employers after being developed in Yorkshire and the Humber. Finance for green equipment. 8 March The Carbon Trust and Siemens have launched a scheme to provide UK businesses with green equipment finance worth up to 550 million over the next three years. Competition for collaborative R&D funding for Sustainable Protein Production A new initiative by the UK Technology Strategy Board offers opportunities for aquaculture companies and processors to become involved in collaborative R&D projects with academic and other partners. The call for proposals goes out 1 April, projects are awarded in July. The competition has two interrelated core themes: Increasing domestic supply of sustainably produced vegetable protein for farmed animals (including land and marine based aquaculture); and increasing production efficiency and sustainability of domestically supplied animal and fish protein for food, and reducing waste in the food chain to the point of retail sale. Fish farming could be the saviour of wild fish. March New research by the Sintef and Aquaculture, Norsk institutt for Naturforskning (NINA) and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) have studied saithe and cod that have taken to staying close for fish farms.
