3 Welcome to this course! On behalf of CMCC, we are happy to welcome you to this journey through Impacts of Climate Change and Adaptation. Course Objectives This course is the first one of the two 3-day courses developed by CMCC under the Italy-Romania Cooperative Programme on Environment Research and Training (CIR). The aim of the training programme is to provide you with the opportunity to gain a solid understanding of the main issues concerning the set-up of a National Adaptation Strategy, and gain techniques to successfully participate at definition of the Romanian Adaptation Plan. This first course will focus on the understanding of general economic issues involved on climate change, the impacts and adaptation capacity in several sectors with a special insight on agriculture. Workshop preparations To fully benefit from the workshop, kindly follow the instructions below: Describe your three most important expectations on page 8 (bring it with you the first day!) At the end of each course day, we suggest you to answer the three questions you ll find from page 12 in order to fix your reflections of the day! At the end of the third day please do not forget to fulfil our evaluation questionnaire! Enjoy the course! Best regards, Roberto Roson Pierpaolo Duce Course Overview_25Oct2007 3

7 Some hints on Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC) The Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is an Italian Research Consortium consisting of different Italian public and private research institutions and focused on climate-related research. The Centre is financially supported by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory, the Ministry for Education, University and Research and the Ministry for Economy. The areas of activity of the Centre are: numerical simulations and production of climate scenarios; impact studies (socio-economic, on health, agriculture, carbon cycle, desertification and coastal zones); adaptation and mitigation policies. A significant component of the research is on the monitoring of the eco-environmental resources and specifically water. The Centre implements cross-sectoral research activities to pursue the following results as: development of first level research on climate, the factors influencing c1imate change and their applications; development of an integrated system for marine environment protection in the Mediterranean and for the sustainable use of its resources; production of applications designed for researchers of the disciplines strongly related to climate studies; services and products for the economic sectors historically dependent on climate predictions (transport, agriculture, energy, tourism); contribution to the improvement of weather forecasts for an efficient identification and prevention of potential risks; provision of information and tools to relevant administrations in order to face and solve emergencies, support services for policy makers and governmental bodies; information on climate issues available for the civil society. In addition, CMCC organises training activities for highly qualified personnel both in the field of climate dynamics and information technologies. Through these activities, the Centre provides the scientific community with high quality products, competencies and resources, together with technical-scientific support realized by a specific group in charge of user assistance on the use and the development of numerical models. Within the international framework, CMCC interacts with the most advanced research centres on climate, and in particular it aims at representing a link between European research centres and countries and communities of Northern Africa. Specifically, the CMCC provides research coordination and management for international projects led by the Italian ministries and provides technical support in several multilateral international activities such as UNFCCC, UNCCD, IPCC and UNEP.
