7 News During the implement time, RIA1 s staffs have received many support and encouragement of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Relic Management Board. The task has been successfully completed and contributes to maintain and conservation the special Relic of country. RIA1 has received a Research Excellence Award of Ministry of Science and Technology Vo Van Binh there have been 75 aquatic endanger genetic sources safely conserved, of which many species were successfully reproduction and supported to aquaculture industry such as common carp strains, tilapia, groupers, cobia, barramundi, shrimps. On 3 December, 2013, on the occasion of the program workshop, the Minister of Science and Technology awarded a genetic conservation excellence research to RIA1. On behalf of RIA1, Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy received this Award Currently, the diversity of genetic sources plays an important role in the agricultural development. Unfortunately, under high pressure of intensive farming together with the uncontrolled of exotic species, destruction of environment and habitat has led to degradation of the native genetic sources, which contributes to high economic stocks. Beware of this situation, from 2001 now, the Ministry of Science and Technology has promoted genetic Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Vice Director, third from right, receives the Award resources conservation and development program consisting of cultivate plants, seed for animal and aquaculture stocks. 8 Science and Technology Preliminary results on incubation and nursering of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus L. in Vietnam Nguyen Thanh Hai, Nguyen Hong Diep, Nguyen Trong Tai, Tran Thi Kim Chi European whitefish Coregonus lavaretus L. is a cold water fish species and mainly distributed in the northern hemisphere. With the high qualities of meat and eggs, it is considered to be economic valuable culture species and reared intensively in ponds (Tournay, 2006). Dissolved oxygen requirement of the whitefish is above 7mg/l and suitable ph ranges from 6.5 to 8.5. Europe whitefish is a eurythermal species and can be resistant to the environment. It can grow better than rainbow trout in high temperature conditions. In the culture environment, whitefish can survive in water temperature range from C. Suitable temperature is C for growth and C for spawning and incubation (Berg, 1948). To contribute to the diversification of the culture species in cold water, invasion of the European whitefish is gradually proactive to produce and supply seed, creates of diversified products for domestic consumption and directions to exports, contributing to exploit efficiently cold water resources and sustainability in Vietnam. For this purpose, the Directorate of Fisheries - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has assigned the Research Institute for Aquaculture No1 the project "Transferation of seed production technology of European whitefish (Coregonus Lavaretus L.)". The project is being conducted at the Research Center for cold water Fisheries in Sa Pa. Fertilized eggs were imported from Finland and incubated in the tanks with an average rate of 1 liter of eggs per 3 liters of water and the average water flow of liter/minute. Un-hatched eggs were removed daily by siphon and calculated for determination of egg hatchability rate. The larvae were reared in 3 composite tanks at a density of 40 individual/liter. Water level and Market size of European whitefish. Photo by Tran Thi Kim Chi flow rate were maintained at 20-40cm in the rearing tank and 0.6 to 1.6 liters/min/10000 individuals, respectively. 8 RIA1 s Newsletter. Issue 12 ( Jan 2014)

9 Science and Technology Fish lavae was provided food after spent out the egg yolk and fed at 3-10g food per 10 thousand larvae with the frequyency of 12 time/day during the first 1-2 rearing weeks. Results showed that egg hatchability rate of fertilized eggs imported from Finland was 74.99% after 8 days incubation in Sapa - Lao Cai province. This results were lower than other studies in Finland. it may be due to transport eggs over a long period of time (52 hours). those in Finland, but these result is very satisfactory because the whitefish is the first time being tested. With the results obtained, we believe that the whitefish can be incubating and rearing success in Vietnam. Reviewed by Dr. Le Van Khoi Preliminary research results on artificial seed reproduction of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii in Vietnam Nguyen Thi Hoa, Nguyen Duc Tuan Siberian Sturgeon is a rapid growth, early maturity (4-6 years) species in culture conditions; produces good quality caviar and is becoming a popular culture species in the world. In recent years, Siberian sturgeon farming has been well developed in Vietnam but the sturgeon seed is still being imported from abroad. Thus, Ministry of Science and Technology has assigned RIA1 to implement the project European whitefish fry. Photo by Tran Thi Kim Chi After 5 weeks of rearing, fish larvae reached the highest weight of 0.087g/fish and the lowest weight was 0.084g/fish. The averaged survival rate were % and the highest survival reached 82.16%. The first results of the hatching and incubating of European whitefish in Vietnam is not higher than "Research on artificial seed production technology of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii" - KC.06.06/11-15 code - with the aim of building artificial propagation technology of Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii in Vietnam towards fully active production of Siberian surgeon seed with low price and quality assurance without depending on imported RIA1 s Newsletter. 10 Science and Technology source. Until Dec. 2013, the project has conducted 2 spawning times with 7 female and 6 male brooders. At the first spawning time, 7,000 new hatched larvae were produced and currently there are 2,000 fry larvae survied at 5-7cm length size; at the second spawning time, 25,000 new hatched larvae were produced. In addition, the project has obtained results on some technology stages such as: selection of broodstock, rearing conditions for maturation of broodstock; temperature - temperature range - overwinter priod for brooder sexual maturity; type and dosage of hormones stimulating ovulation; methods of collecting eggs, sperm and temporary storage of sperm; artificial insemination; de-adhesive eggs materials and de-adhesive eggs methods; equipments and Artificial insemination for Siberian sturgeon eggs. Photo by Nguyen Duc Tuan This is the first successful time in researching on artificial reproduction of the Siberian sturgeon in Vietnam by the effort of RIA1 s staff and coordinating agencies and it marks advances in cold-water fish hatchery technology in Vietnam. Reviewed by MSc. Nguyen Anh Hieu methods of egg incubation. In the coming period, the project will continue to enhance technical criteria such as the proportion of fish sexual maturity after artificial overwinter, sperm quality of males, fertility, hatch ability, survival of fish from fry to fingerling stage. 10 RIA1 s Newsletter.
