14 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management General Evaluation: The trial was established as an efficacy trial (growth regulation) in winter barley with the objective of testing Medax Top at different doses. The treatment with Medax Top was carried out when the winter barley was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 5% at a half dose and by 7% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. At the time of full earing a delay in growth was recorded at half and quarter doses compared with untreated. On 9 July it was recorded that the treatment had resulted in a reduction in the breaking of the ears compared with untreated. The treatment with Moddus M was carried out when the winter barley was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment there was no reduction in the height of the straw at a half dose compared with untreated. At a normal dose the straw height was increased by 5% compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. No delay in growth was recorded at the time of full earing at half and quarter doses compared with untreated. The treatment with Terpal was carried out when the winter barley was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment there was no reduction in the height of the straw at a half dose compared with untreated. At a normal dose the straw height had been reduced by 2% compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. No delay in growth was recorded at the time of full earing at half and quarter doses compared with untreated. There was a significant difference in the breaking of the ears at one of the treatments. At the measuring of the straw height 3 and 6 weeks after treatment there was a significant difference between 2 treatments but none compared with untreated. The treatment with Medax Top was carried out when the winter rye was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 12% at a half dose and by 21% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times. At harvest, the score in untreated was 13, which is equivalent of approx. 5% of the straws leaning. At a half dose the score was 8, which is equivalent of approx. 3% of the straws leaning. At a normal dose the score was 4, which is equivalent of approx. 15% of the straws leaning. At the time of full earing in untreated, growth stage 59, a delay in growth was recorded at half and normal doses. At a half dose the winter rye was at growth stage 57 and at a normal dose the winter rye was at growth stage 55. At harvest, a reduction in straw breaking was recorded at half and normal doses compared with untreated. The treatment with Moddus M was carried out when the winter rye was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 3% at a half dose and by 12% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times. At harvest, the score in untreated was 13, which is equivalent of approx. 5% of the straws leaning. At a half dose the score was 1, which is equivalent of approx. 4% of the straws leaning. At a normal dose the score was 8, which is equivalent of approx. 3% of the straws leaning. At the time of full earing in untreated, growth stage 59, a delay in growth was recorded at half and normal doses. At a half dose the winter rye was at growth stage 58 and at a normal dose the winter rye was at growth stage 57. 41 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management General Evaluation: The trial was established as an efficacy trial (growth regulation) in triticale with the objective of testing Medax Top at different doses. The treatment with Medax Top was carried out when the triticale was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 22% at a half dose and by 32% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. Neither was any breaking of straws or ears recorded at half and normal doses. The treatment with Moddus M was carried out when the triticale was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 8% at a half and normal doses. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. Neither was any breaking of straws or ears recorded at half and normal doses. The treatment with Terpal was carried out when the triticale was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 11% at a half dose and by 18% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. Neither was any breaking of straws or ears recorded at half and normal doses. At the measuring of the straw height 3 and 6 weeks after treatment there was a significant difference between several treatments and compared with untreated. 52 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management General Evaluation: The trial was established as an efficacy trial (growth regulation) in winter wheat with the objective of testing Medax Top at different doses. The treatment with Medax Top was carried out when the winter wheat was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 7% at a half dose and by 13% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. At earing in untreated, growth stage 55, a delay in growth (growth stage 53) was recorded at a normal dose. No breaking of straws or ears was recorded at half and normal doses. The treatment with Moddus M was carried out when the winter wheat was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 1% at a half dose and 2% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. At earing in untreated, growth stage 55, no delay in growth was recorded at half and normal doses. Nor was any breaking of straws or ears recorded at half or normal doses. The treatment with Terpal was carried out when the winter wheat was at growth stage Measuring of the straw height was carried out 3 and 6 weeks after treatment. 6 weeks after treatment the height of the straw had been reduced by 3% at a half dose and 6% at a normal dose compared with untreated. Lodging was assessed several times, but no lodging was recorded at normal and half doses. At earing in untreated, growth stage 55, a delay in growth was recorded at a normal dose at which time the winter wheat was at growth stage 54 in normal dose treatments. No breaking of straws or ears was recorded at half and normal doses compared with untreated. At the measuring of the straw height 3 and 6 weeks after treatment there was a significant difference between several treatments and compared with untreated. 72 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management Appendix B. 1. Reading Guide Guide Lines EPPO Guidelines are used as basis for the trial work at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management (Effect of Pesticide). At a number of situations the EPPO Guidelines give a possibility to choose between several methods. Therefore, it is the methods used by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management (Effect of Pesticide) that are described in the following. Trial Design All trials have been carried out as field trials at farmers in Zealand and Jutland. They are designed as randomised bloc design with 2 factors, herbicides and doses, with untreated as comparison treatment. Three different designs are normally used: 1. Selectivity trial with normal dose and double dose, respectively (1/1 and 2/1). 2. Efficacy trial, 3 doses with quarter, half and normal dose, respectively (1/4, 1/2 and 1/1). 3. Efficacy trial, 2 doses with half and normal dose, respectively (1/2 and 1/1). Growth regulation trials are normally with half, normal and double dose, respectively (1/2, 1/1 and 2/1). Desiccation trials are normally with half and normal dose, respectively (1/2 and 1/1). Dosage of surfactant and oil follows the water volume and not the dosage. Therefore, the quantity of surfactant and oil is the same irrespective of herbicide dosage. Trial descriptions Estimations of climatic and soil characteristics at the time of treatment: Cloud cover: Soil moisture: Clear sun Misty sun Slightly clouded sun Slightly clouded Overcast Very dry Dry Moist Wet Very wet Research Centre Flakkebjerg Flakkebjerg 72 Tel: DK-42 Slagelse Fax:

73 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management Water balance of the plants: Wet Slightly damp Dry, turgid Dry Marked by drought Visual Assessments and Scales At the estimation of stage of development of crop and weed, the BBCH scales are used if these are elaborated. In 25 the BBCH scales are used for cereals, oil seed rape, beets, maize, peas and potatoes. For other crops and for weeds, the BBCH common scales are used. Scorings on crop: Non specified: Scale (percentage): ARM Code Crop damage (phytotoxicity) - 1. untreated = PHYGEN Specified: Leaf/ear/stem deformity - 1. untreated = PHYDEF (Part of total foliage/ear/stem with abnormal shape) Leaf colour - 1. untreated = - Bleaching PHYBLE - Chlorosis PHYCHL (Part of total foliage with diverging colour) Leaf necroses - 1. untreated = PHYNEC (Part of total foliage dead) Mortality - 1. untreated = MORTAL (Part of plants missing) Lodged corn - 1. LODGIN (All parcels) Research Centre Flakkebjerg Flakkebjerg 73 Tel: DK-42 Slagelse Fax:

74 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management Evaluation of the effects on weeds All visual assessment of effect on weeds, are carried out in following way. The untreated plots are estimated for coverage by using scale -1 %. The effect is seen as effect in relation to biomass in untreated plots by using scale -1 %. Coverage in untreated plots 1 % Effect in treated plots 1 % The calculations of effect to the individual weed species are carried out by a registration of numbers and fresh weight of each species after three counts of.25 m² (or.1 m²) in all plots. The results are stated as average of 3 counts and 4 replications and as percent effect compared to the untreated plots. Weed species, which are estimated as too sparse or unequally represented, are summarised DICSP. All analyses of variance are made on original data. 75 Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Integrated Pest Management 2. The Climate in Flakkebjerg For the country in general the climate during the growing season (Sept. 28-Aug. 2) was mild and sunny. The average temperature was 1,2 C above normal and the global radiation was 12% above normal. The precipitation was 3% less than normal and the evaporation was 16% higher than normal. At Flakkebjerg the autumn (September November) was sunny and the average temperature was normal. September was exceptional dry but the rainfall during October November was a bit higher than normal. The first frost came late (1. November). The weather did not affect the sowing of winter crops. The winter (December February) was cold and dry. Especially January was very dry with only 5% of the normal precipitation. The spring (March May) was warm and sunny and in April the rainfall was only 6mm. The evaporation was much higher than normal, and some crops were affected by the dry and sunny weather. The summer (June August) was warm and sunny. June was wet but it was owing to heavy rainfall (66 mm) on the June. August was very dry (16 mm). The harvest started 2 weeks before normal. Due to the rain in May and June the yields were normal. The automatic weather station at Flakkebjerg is located 12 km from the West Zealand coast. The climate at Flakkebjerg is representative of the area in which most of our trials are situated.
