5 e-profit Moitor Aalysis Drystock Farms 2017 Foreword This year s aalysis of the 2017 beef ad sheep eprofit Moitors is made up of 2,159 beef farms ad 922 sheep farms from across the coutry. It also looks at the eprofit Moitors from 980 beef ad 211 sheep farms that completed data for both 2016 ad 2017 ad compares the differeces i output, costs ad profits o those farms from oe year to the ext. Drystock farmers that have completed a Teagasc eprofit Moitor for 2017 should bechmark their farms aalysis with the eterprise i this booklet that best matches their ow. To aid this we have icluded beef ad sheep tables behid the back cover that you ca fill i from your ow aalysis. By foldig this out you ca the compare your farms figures with ay of the tables i the booklet. Where the Top 1/3 of farmers figures are preseted i the tables this refers to the Top 1/3 of farms withi a eterprise whe the farms were raked o their gross margi per hectare excludig ay premia paymets. Gross margi excludig premia per hectare is a importat idicator because it highlights the curret level of techical efficiecy at which the eterprise is operatig as well as showig the potetial for improvemet. There is a high correlatio betwee this figure ad et profit per hectare. The Appedix Tables iclude more detailed aalysis of the differet eterprises ad show the rage i both physical ad fiacial performace that exists from the top to the bottom farms whe they were raked o gross margi excludig premia per hectare. They also have more detail o the breakdow of the variable ad fixed costs per hectare for beef ad sheep farms i Pearse Kelly, Head of Drystock Kowledge Trasfer iv

6 e-profit Moitor Aalysis Drystock Farms 2017 Sucklig to Beef Farms 2017 Beef farms that have a suckler cow herd ad where the progey of the herd are brought through to slaughter. 1

7 Sucklig to Beef Farms 2017 The top 1/3 of farms geerated a gross output of 1,932 per hectare compared to 1,334 o the average farms, a differece of 598 per hectare or 45%. The higher output o the top farms reflected a higher stockig rate (+0.41 LU/ha), a higher output per livestock uit (+48kg) ad a higher output value per kg (+18c /kg LW). Output per hectare o the top 1/3 of farms was 855 kg or 39% higher (+242 kg) tha o the average farm (613 kg per ha). Average suckler to beef farms had lower variable costs tha the top farms at 662 versus 821 per hectare. However, as a percetage of gross output they accouted for 50% o the average farms compared to 43% of the output o the top farms. The gross margi was 1,112 per hectare o the top 1/3 of suckler to beef farms which was 60% higher or 441 per hectare higher tha those o the average farms. The biggest variable cost o suckler to beef farms i 2017 was purchased forage ad cocetrate accoutig for 38% or 252 per hectare of total variable costs. The top three variable costs of feed, fertiliser ad cotractor accouted for 75% of all variable costs i The average suckler to beef farm i 2017 geerated a et profit of 145 per hectare excludig premia compared to 493 per hectare o the top 1/3 of farms. I real terms the top 1/3 of suckler to beef farms geerated 16,495 more et profit before premia tha the average of the group. 2

11 e-profit Moitor Aalysis Drystock Farms 2017 Sucklig to Wealig / Store Farms The top 1/3 of producers i this system carried 23% more stock at a modest 1.87 LU per hectare versus 1.52 LU per hectare for the average farm. They also produced 30 kg LW per LU more tha the average (318 kg v 288 kg). Gross output was 955 per hectare i the average group, 31% or 426 per hectare lower tha the top 1/3 of farms ( 1,381 per ha). The top 1/3 of farms based o output values achieved a average price per kilo LW of 2.32 compared to 2.18/kg LW o the average farms. Variable costs were 497 per hectare o the average farms or 10% lower tha o the top 1/3. However, as a proportio of gross output they accouted for 52% ad 40% of the output o the average ad top 1/3 of farms, respectively. Average fertiliser costs, feed costs (purchased forage ad cocetrates) ad cotractor charges accouted for 72% or 356 per hectare of total variable costs i Gross margi per hectare o the top 1/3 of sucklig to wealig/store farms was almost 81% higher whe compared to the average farm. Top 1/3 of farms geerated a gross margi of 830 per hectare compared to 458 o the average farm. The gross margi o the average farms was barely sufficiet to cover all the fixed costs of 447 per hectare o these farms. This left a meagre et profit of 11 per hectare before premia o these farms resultig i them holdig o to 102% of their premia. I cotrast, fixed costs o the top 1/3 of sucklig to wealig/store farms were 513 per hectare, leavig a et profit before premia of 318 per hectare. The top 1/3 of suckler to wealig/store farms geerated 10,382 more i et profit before premia compared to the average farm i the group.

15 e-profit Moitor Aalysis Drystock Farms 2017 No-Breedig Beef Farms 2017 The gross margi o the top 1/3 of o-breedig beef farms was 582 per hectare higher tha the average ( 1,352 versus 770 per ha). The higher gross margi was due to the higher level of output achieved o the top 1/3 of farms (gross output was 855 per ha higher o the top 1/3 of farms). The icreased gross output o the top performig herds came from three key areas; a higher output per LU, a higher stockig rate ad a higher value (9c) per kg liveweight sold. Output per LU was 81 kg higher tha the average o the top 1/3 of farms (494 kg versus 413 kg per LU). Stockig rate was 0.44 LU per ha higher (2.22 LU per ha o top 1/3 of farms versus 1.78 LU per ha o the average farms). The top 1/3 of farms achieved a value of 2.19 per kg live-weight versus 2.10 per kg achieved o the average farms. Variable costs were 273 per hectare higher o the top 1/3 of farms but the higher output offset these costs (variable costs made up 44% of gross output o the top 1/3 versus 50% of gross output o the average farms). Purchased feed ad cocetrates accouted for 47% ( 378/ha) of variable costs o o-breedig farms. Whe feed, fertiliser ad cotractor costs are combied they make up 81% of total variable costs. The average o-breedig beef farm made a et profit of 236 per hectare whereas the sigificatly higher gross output o the top 1/3 of o-breedig beef farms ad better cost dilutio resulted i a et profit of 714 per hectare before premia. 10

19 Compariso 2016 v 2017 (Beef Farms) There was a slight icrease i stockig rate (1.78 versus 1.73 LU per ha) ad a slight icrease i the output per LU (344 versus 336 kg per LU) which whe combied, resulted i a 5% icrease i output of beef produced per hectare (612 versus 581 kg per ha). With very little fluctuatio i overall beef price betwee 2017 ad 2016 the 5% rise i gross output value was as a result of a icrease i kilograms of beef output per hectare ( 1,308 versus 1,245 per ha). Variable costs rose margially i 2017 by 15 per hectare compared to the 2016 figures. Feed ad fertiliser costs varied by very little year o year with feed prices easig slightly i 2017 ad fertiliser prices risig i the secod half of the year. With a icrease i gross output ad variable costs per hectare similar for both years, the gross margi per hectare icreased to 660/ha i 2017 compared to 612 per hectare i 2016 (8% icrease). Fixed costs per hectare were up oly slightly ( 12/ha) i 2017 whe compared to Net profit excludig premia i 2017 rose by 36 per hectare o the recorded beef farms ( 145 versus 109). Premia received betwee both years remaied almost static at 492 ad 490/ha i 2016 ad 2017 respectively. 14
