1 SOUTHERN COUNTIES AUCTIONEERS Salisbury Livestock Market Tuesday 16 th August 2016 Head Of Stock (841) Barren Cows & Bulls (7) Auctioneer Iain Soutar Trade: Cow numbers are low everywhere and with our lack of local dairies we suffer more than most. Trade remains good, but no faster, although we had no really best sorts forward. There were, however, some good heavy animals on offer selling to 125p ( 1075) and 119p for Angus from Jane Lovelace, 122p for Charolais x from Steve Selby and 109.5p for Friesians from John Crocker. A few plain cows included which brought the average back to just over the 1 per kilo mark. Cows 125.0p to 51.5p av p or av Friesian to 109.5p ( ) Charolais x to 122p ( ) British Blue x to 71.5p ( ) Angus x to 125p ( 1075) OTM Clean Cattle (10) Auctioneer Iain Soutar Trade: The best continentals with a bit of time to 3 years of age continue to be in demand at up to 165.5p for a Simmental x steer from Messrs Head Bros. A run of well fed over three year old non-assured Friesian steers from Owen Martin met the usual good response from those buyers looking for cheaper cattle to bone out selling to 129.5p or Just one heifer, a strong Angus from Keith Ashburner which returned well at Steers 165.5p to 113.5p av p or av Simmental x to 165.5p ( ) Friesian to 129.5p ( ) 128.0p or ( Angus x ) UTM Finished Cattle (36) Auctioneer Iain Soutar Trade: Numbers remaining pretty good and steady although somewhere along the line we will get a very short week. The general shortage of stock across the country has forced the larger supermarket abattoirs to move their prices up at last and this is reflecting in a stronger trade in the live ring, producing much better returns, although today there were no suckler bred cattle to produce the really high figures. Top prices within the different sexes and weight ranges were dominated by two runs of cattle from Matthew Pickford, Stoke Farms who sold medium steers to 186.5p, heavy steers to 180.5p and heavy heifers to 182p ( all Blues ) with steers returning up to and heifers , and Messrs Head Bros who sold light steers to 185p, medium steers to 186.5p and light heifers to 171.5p, ( all Simmentals ). Top price heifer however was a medium weight Limousin from Henry and Stan Rawlins and family at 186p per kilo. A run of Angus x Friesian heifers from Brian and Jim Down sold well to average 1050 at 600 kilos. Friesians also receiving an uplift and selling to 146.5p from David Hole and family, well ahead of the price in the store ring today. Just a couple of bulls with the pick an Angus from Howard and Alison Smith at 154p.

2 Farm assurance is getting more and more important, unless you ve got the very best butcher s quality or you leave enough time and scope for someone else to get them assured ( 90 days ). Although you may not agree with the principle, or practice of it, there is no doubt it is essential to access the main markets for beef cattle and allow all to bid for your cattle. Steers (19) Top price 186.5p per kilo Lightweight 185.0p to 131.5p av p or av Mediumweight 186.5p to 175.5p av p or av Heavyweight 180.5p to 144.5p av p or av Overall average p per kilo British Blue x to 186.5p ( ) Simmental x to 186.5p ( ) Hereford x to 175.5p ( ) Angus x to 179.5p ( ) Friesian to 146.5p ( ) Young Bulls (2) Top price 154.0p per kilo Mediumweight 154.0p to 114.5p av p or av Angus to 154p ( ) Gloucester to 114.5p ( ) Heifers (15) Top price 186.0p per kilo 171.5p or Mediumweight 186.0p to 173.5p av p or av Heavyweight 182.0p to 167.5p av p or av Overall average p per kilo British Blue x to 182.5p ( ) Limousin x to 186p ( ) Simmental x to 173.5p ( ) Angus x to 179.5p ( ) Sheep (459) Auctioneer Simon Whaley PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT As from January 1 st 2015 all sheep must have electronically readable ear tags. 4 Store Cattle (119) Auctioneer Ian Tanner Trade: Another good number forward for a fine summers day, a real mixed entry with nice better end stores of all grades, particularly 450kg upwards, a very strong trade, with harder older or more awkward cattle a more challenging trade. Certainly plenty of strong support for stronger cattle, which were keenly contested. Young stores 4-5 m.o. found good support. Freefolk Farms sold Simmental steers to 420 and heifers to 386. Morgan Manston s Fleckvieh found tremendous competition topping at 374. Plenty of hard Friesian steers 9-12 m.o. traded from 330 to 288. A smashing run of Sussex cattle saw steers to 730 and heifers to 600 from Hazeley Down Farm, Mick Newell s smart Beef Shorthorn steers sold to 745 at 15 m.o. Stronger cattle the order of the day, with Keith Ashburner selling Limousin heifers to 955 and overage Angus heifers to 825. A good run from Henry & Stan Rawlins and family saw Angus trade from 970 to 818 or 180p to 185p per kilo, their British Blue steer selling to 1115, and James Renwick s lorry load of stores saw British Blue steers to 1158, Angus steers to 990, Angus heifers to 950, topping the day. Robert White s strong Aberdeen Angus steer to a grand Stronger cattle wanted and nice young stores keenly contested. Certainly more awkward out of spec cattle trading at lower levels.
