1 P21 Telford Farmlet Weekly summary: 30 Jan 15 DM / (co ( ) / Control % Off paddock % Optimised feeding % Rainfall: 27 Soil temperature: 13.9 GEERAL Tail paint all s and record the numbers of s on heat to identify empties for culling Schedule 2 nd pregnancy diagnosis for as early as possible to allow culling decisions to be finalised Book culls in to the works for early March and early April now Re-evaluate ing frequency based on average pasture cover and body condition score targets. OAD ing likely for the whole herd from early February Continue to monitor crop yields and confirm baleage on nd Confirm winter grazing contracts Do costings on supplements available and the profit/return from purcsing OFF PADDOCK Complete summer/autumn feed budget to determine ing frequency continue with pasture silage and PKE feeding Identify culls and remove from herd to reduce feed demand Investigate options for securing silage/winter feed for in the barn considering supplementing the winter diet with PKE if pasture silage is short. OPTIMISED FEEDIG Complete summer/autumn feed budget to determine ing frequency 340 DM cereal silage available in the stack for this herd o Conservative growth rates used: 25 d growth for the next 2 weeks then 30 and 35 through till late April Calculate spacings for baleage on winter crop paddocks and fence off critical source areas before the crop gets too tall Monitor cereal silage crop to ensure a timely rvest to maximise quality /

2 P21 Telford Farmlet Weekly summary: 23 Jan 15 DM / (co ( ) / Control Off paddock Optimised feeding Rainfall: 13.8 Soil temperature: 14.9 degrees GEERAL Implement 3 times in 2 day ing interval (5 am, 4 pm, noon) for all TAD herds from Thursday 22 nd January to reduce pressure on s and pastures while growth rates recover following the rain. Reassess in 10 days time based on average pasture cover. Apply maintenance fertiliser to all paddocks based on annual soil test results Resume topping of paddocks with dead material accumulating in clumps, to regain quality after the dry spell Recommence nitrogen applications while there is sufficient moisture Continue to identify genuine culls to manage pasture and silage availability Reassess split of s between OAD and 3 in 2 day ing intervals based on and yield Identify paddocks for regrassing in February using annual DM production data, physical condition and species present Continue with PKE feeding Commence feeding PKE in troughs in the paddock with the intention of reducing the amount of silage offered. We are considering this for part of the diet during winter due to the current shortage of pasture silage on the farm OPTIMAL Commence feeding PKE in troughs in the paddock with the intention of reducing the amount of silage offered Remove the bulls on Saturday 24 th (10 weeks mating) Target the Italian ryegrass paddocks for fertiliser following grazing applied to cereal silage paddock following the rain /

3 P21 Telford Farmlet Weekly summary: 15 Jan 15 DM / (co ( ) / Control Off paddock Optimised feeding Rainfall: 0.0 Soil temperature: 14.6 degrees GEERAL The rising plate meter (winter equation) is currently overestimating pasture mass by around 400 DM/ due to stem & seedhead rate is now significantly below demand and significant rainfall is unlikely in the next 10 days therefore action is required to reduce feed demand immediately 30 culls booked to go as soon as space is available. These will be removed from the herd now and used to clean up paddocks behind ers if required and offered silage on the pad. Remaining culls are being identified. Capitalise on the opportunity to drop effluent pond levels by utilising the effluent on dry paddocks Actively pursue grazing options for the R2 heifers from now Minimise post graze topping until after we ve rain Be vigilant with crop monitoring and spray for weeds and insects to maximise yield opportunities Revisit herd splits to get more even numbers between OAD and TAD herds to allow PKE feeding to both herds (currently the TAD herd is too big for the PKE feeding area) Increase amount of PKE offered to reduce the demand on the limited silage we ve available Investigate options to graze more s off over winter Apply 60 urea/ to summer turnips as soon as we get rainfall Commence silage feeding to maintain the rotation above 35 days Introduce PKE to reduce demand for silage Put lower producers (<1 /) and low (<4) onto OAD ing Purcse PKE for winter feeding to top up the silage; currently ve insufficient silage for wintering /

4 OPTIMAL Hold the rotation above 35 days using supplements Introduce PKE to reduce demand for silage Put lower producers (<1 /) and low (<4) onto OAD ing Apply 60 urea/ to whole crop paddock as soon as we get moisture
