2 KOSOVO INDEPENDENCE & European Union Accession process Kosovo declared it s independence on 17 February 2008 Kosovo is a Potential Candidate country for EU accession.

3 Key figures about Kosovo Land area: 10,900 km² About 1.8 million (165 inhabitants per km²) Kosovo Albanians 92%, Other 8% (Serb, Bosniak, Gorani, Roma, Turk, Ashkali, Egyptian) 2/3 of population live in rural areas 27.2% of population under 14 years 66.1% between15-64 years Less than 6.5% of population over 65 years old

4 Agriculture of Kosovo Kosovo has a total area of 1.1 million hectares (ha), of which 53% is agricultural land. Agriculture: Products-fruits and vegetables (potatoes, berries), wheat, corn, wine, beef. GDP: Agriculture 14% Kosovo is still an importer of many agricultural products, which accounted for 24.4% of overall imports Agriculture provides jobs for approximately 42% of the population, primarily on an informal basis

5 IADK The Initiative for Agriculture Development in Kosovo (IADK) is a non-profit, nongovernmental organization that was established in 2004 in Mitrovica, Northern Kosovo, as a result of a localization initiative of Lutheran World Federation Balkan Programme. IADK s mission is to promote socio-economic development of rural areas, to reduce unemployment and create income generating opportunities, to contribute on reducing migration to urban areas, and to support farmers and agricultural activities. Taking into account gender equality, the involvement of minorities and increasing awareness of environmental protection in Kosovo are also important concerns of IADK s mission. IADK aims to address particularly the agricultural sector problems by improving the quality and quantity of the agriculture sector, increasing knowledge and competiveness of farmers and strengthening the role of farmers.

6 Projects implemented by IADK During the last 10 years IADK implemented 48 projects funded by different donors such as EU, UNDP, USAID, Mercy Corps, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), GIZ, and different church-based funding opportunities. Since February 2013 the internal management and control system for provision of services is certified according to ISO 9001:2008 to assure also in future a high standard of IADK s services.

7 Projects implemented by IADK Recently IADK established a new office and training centre in Vushtrri with space of around 1,200 m2. Seven cars and modern office equipment and IT systems are available. Due to the successful work during the last 10 years the number of staff and annual turnover increased each year. The staff is now 20 full time All those mentioned specific local knowledge, experience, networks and resources of IADK are very valuable for successful development of future agricultural advisory system and services in Kosovo.

8 Activities of IADK Provision of advisory and training services Livestock farmers support (health and production) Horticulture - growing and cultivation of fruits and vegetable, medicinal herbs Food processing, module of fruit, vegetable, cheese and dough Visits and experience exchanges Market access - fresh products & processors Farmers associations and network union FA Cooperation and increase of local institution - local NGOs, and regional and central structures Lobbing for central governmental/municipal level on behalf of farmers interests. IADK offers advisory services to the MAFRD in agriculture sector(part of working strategically plans, rule making, law preparing) Diversification of activities (widow women's/buffets in school) Publications of brochures/leaflets for different sectors of agriculture

11 Increase quality of Advisory services IADK also has created her own curricula's that are used during trainings in livestock (cows, goats, sheeps, bees,) horticulture, (fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs) and food processing(fruits, vegetable, cheese, dough). One of Cooperation's of IADK with EUFRAS can be creation the curricula's according to European standards, which could be used to improve the quality of Advisory services in different sectors of Agriculture in Kosovo

12 Advisory services in Kosovo IADK is Certificated for Accreditation and Validation from our National Qualification Authority for the Livestock Sector for level 3 according to the Kosovo standards for education. IADK staff is in process of certification for the private adviser from the Ministry of Agriculture.

13 The best ways of consulting services: Direct-farm advice face to face, follow consistently farmers with advisory services and practical methods learning by doing. Organization of consulting services together with processing companies and collection of agricultural products. Preparation of educational materials for farmers on specific topics, where an educational material addresses only a problem of the farmer which confronts the farm. Challenges for advisory services: Organization of advisory services by inadequate institutions and non-qualified expert for corresponding fields training Law on is incomplete advisory services with administrative instructions, MAFRD has no clear strategy in organizing consulting services. No profiled farmers and a large number of small farmers who have no other alternative but farming.
