1 WATER FOR PEACE Press Kit 2018

2 Dear Media Contact: We strongly believe that the world suffers not because we lack the capacity to tackle the challenges ailing it, but because of lack of engaging with each other, and lack of connecting to combine our collective resources and capacities. Right now, 1/3 of the world s population lives in water-stressed areas. By 2025, 2/3 of the world s population may face water shortages. The global water crisis is the defining challenge of our time, and it will take no less than the concerted effort of every sector to address it. That is why we invite you to join us in spreading the message far and wide about Water for Peace, taking place this June 2 nd at the Spoke Club in Toronto. This event serves as a meeting point for likeminded individuals with the urge to address the water crisis, bringing together national and international leaders, worldrenowned humanitarians, environmental champions, peace activists, and key industry leaders and stakeholders in Canada. Canadian hero, the Hon. Lt. Gen. (ret d) Roméo Dallaire, will be our keynote for the evening; award-winning recording artist and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal will be our lead performer; and the evening will be MC d by award-winning host of Discovery Channel s Daily Planet, Ziya Tong. There are several ways that you can help us support the Water for Peace Cocktail Event: Purchase event tickets (CAD $200 each) Promote the event through your media, option to conduct an interview with James Madhier, founder and Executive Director of the Rainmaker Enterprise, or one of our other distinguished performers or guests This is an opportunity for you to identify yourself and your news outlet within an event featuring high-level dignitaries and in support of the Rainmaker Enterprise, which has gained coverage by CTV, the Toronto Star, CBC, the UNEP, and more! 4 KEY FACTS 1 in 9 people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water 1/3 of the world s population now lives in water-stressed areas. By 2025, 2/3 of the world s population could face water shortages 1 out of every 5 deaths of children under 5 is due to a water-related disease. Every 90 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease In developing countries, as much as 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions Girls under the age of 15 are twice as likely as boys to be the family member responsible for fetching water. Sub-Saharan Africa loses 40 billion hours per year collecting water; the same as an entire year s labor in all of France 70% of freshwater worldwide is used in agriculture. Agriculture is a major cause and casualty of water scarcity As the global population rises from 7.4bn to close to 10bn by the middle of the century, it is estimated that agricultural production will have to rise by 60% to fill the world s bellies. This will put water supplies under huge strain For every $1 invested in water and sanitation, there is an economic return of between $3 and $34 In 2015, the World Economic Forum cited global water crises as the biggest threat facing the planet over the next decade The decade has been declared by the UN as the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development
