1 Market overview for the 5/6 production season Markoorsig vir die 5/6-produksieseisoen Challenging year for grain production Uitdagende jaar vir graanproduksie PRODUCTION CONDITIONS IN THE 5/6 PRODUCTION SEASON Conditions were already challenging when the 5/6 production season started. 5 was a particularly dry and hot year and was recorded as one of the hottest years in a global context. The soil moisture was already exhausted to a great extent in large parts of the summer sowing areas and at the start of the planting season rain was essential to get seed in the ground. However, the weather did not play along. The market experienced considerable panic because the plantings could not be done in time. In most areas the plantings took place much later than usual because of the rain that only started falling later in the season. The late plantings were seen as very risky, because there were fears that if the winter cold were to come early, production would be negatively affected. The entire season was late including the cold and yield ultimately looked better than was initially expected. The plantings of most of the summer crops declined considerably from the 4/5 production season to the 5/6 production season. The reductions in die areas planted for the various summer crops were as follows: Maize (-6,7%), soybeans (-6,69%), sorghum (-45,6%), groundnuts (-56,64%) and dry beans (-86%). Sunflower was the only summer crop with higher hectares planted for the 5/6 production season than for the 4/5 production season. The sunflower plantings in this period increased by 4,74%. In the winter grain producing regions the wheat plantings for the 6/7 production season looked better. They increased by 5,9% from the 5/6 to the 6/7 production season. However, the barley and canola plantings declined by 5,68% and 4,65% respectively. The expansion of the number of hectares of wheat for the 6/7 season can be attributed to favourable weather conditions in the wheat-producing regions of the Western Cape. The Free State was also seen to have planted more hectares of wheat. The hectares of wheat planted in the Free State increased by about 7,5% from the 5/6 to the 6/7 season. Maize The total maize plantings declined drastically from the 4/5 production season to the 5/6 production season. The greatest decrease in the hectares planted was in white maize, which dropped by 4,7%. The hectares planted with yellow maize declined by 9,7% from the 4/5 to the 5/6 production season (see Graph ). The drastic decrease in maize plantings can be attributed to the dry conditions that prevailed during planting. Some of the main maize-producing regions did not plant at all during the past season. Graph indicates the ratio between white and yellow maize plantings from 99/99 up to 5/6. In the 5/6 production season the white maize plantings occupied around 5% of the total hectares, while the yellow maize plantings occupied about 47%. Die weer het egter nie saamgespeel nie. Baie paniek is in die mark ervaar omdat die aanplantings nie betyds kon plaasvind nie. Die aanplantings het in meeste gebiede baie later as normaal plaasgevind as gevolg van die reën wat eers later in die seisoen begin val het. Die laat aanplantings is as baie riskant beskou, omdat daar vrese bestaan het dat indien die winterkoue vroeg in die seisoen sou aanbreek, dit produksie nadelig sou beïnvloed. Die hele seisoen was laat so ook die koue en opbrengste het uiteindelik beter gelyk as wat aanvanklik verwag is. Die aanplantings van die meeste van die somergewasse het van die 4/5-produksieseisoen na die 5/6-produksieseisoen aansienlik gedaal. Die afnames in die area aangeplant vir die onderskeie somergewasse is soos volg: Mielies (-6,7%), sojabone (-6,69%), sorghum (-45,6%), grondbone (-56,64%) en droëbone (-86%). Sonneblom is die enigste somergewas waarvan die hektare aangeplant vir die 5/6-produksieseisoen hoër was as die 4/5-produksieseisoen. Die sonneblomaanplantings het in hierdie tydperk met 4,74% gestyg. In die wintergraan-produserende streke lyk die koringaanplantings vir die 6/7-produksieseisoen beter. Dit het van die 5/6- na die 6/7-produksieseisoen met 5,9% toegeneem. Die gars- en kanola-aanplantings het egter onderskeidelik met 5,68% en 4,65% gedaal. Die uitbreiding van die aantal hektare vir koring vir die 6/7-seisoen kan toegeskryf word aan gunstige weersomstandighede in die koring produserende streke van die Wes-Kaap. Daar is ook waargeneem dat daar in die Vrystaat meer hektare met koring beplant is. Die hektare in die Vrystaat wat met koring beplant is, het vanaf die 5/6- na die 6/7-seisoen met ongeveer 7,5% toegeneem. Mielies Die totale mielie-aanplantings het van die 4/5-produksieseisoen na die 5/6-produksieseisoen drasties gedaal. Die grootste afname in die hektare aangeplant was dié van witmielies wat met 4,7% gedaal het. Die hektare wat met geelmielies beplant is, het van die 4/5-produksieseisoen na die 5/6-produksieseisoen met 9,7% gedaal (sien Grafiek ). Die drastiese afname in mielieaanplantings kan toegeskryf word aan die droë toestande wat tydens planttyd geheers het. Van die belangrike mielieproduserende streke het hierdie afgelope seisoen glad nie geplant nie. Grafiek dui die verhouding tussen wit- en geelmielie-aanplantings vanaf 99/99 tot en met 5/6 aan. In die 5/6-produksieseisoen het die witmielie-aanplantings om en by 5% van die totale hektare beslaan, terwyl die geelmielie-aanplantings ongeveer 47% beslaan het. 3 Sorghum Graph 4 clearly shows that sorghum production showed a downward trend, while the yields in the 99/99 season showed an upwards trend. The area planted with sorghum in the 5/6 season declined by 45,6% compared to the 4/5 season. The final production estimate for the 5/6 season by the National Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) stood at 74 5 tons. It was about 6,5% lower than the 5 tons of the 4/5 season. The average yield for the season was a little higher than in the previous season and the average yield for the country was,8. It was considerably lower than the long-term average of,48. The drought had a significant impact on sorghum production, as sorghum is generally planted in marginal soils. Sunflower seed The sunflower plantings for the 5/6 production season were the only ones of all the local commodities that showed an increase in plantings compared to the 4/5 season. The number of hectares planted increased by about 4,74% from 576 ha in 4/5 to 78 5 ha in 5/6. The CEC s last production estimate for the season estimated the sunflower seed production for the 5/6 season at 755 tons which is about,88% more than the 66 tons of the 4/5 season. The increase in hectares planted was the result of rain falling later than usual in large parts of the country. 4 be planted later. The yields were affected by the drought conditions and the average yield of,4 was lower than the,5 for the previous season, as well as the long-term average of,4. Graph 5 shows the area planted with sunflower seed, as well as the average yield from 99/99 up to 5/6. Groundnuts Graph 6 shows the area for groundnut plantings, the production and the yields from 999/ up to the 5/6 season. It is clear that the plantings as well as the production of groundnuts have come under pressure over the past few years and that it is demonstrating a significant downward trend. Factors contributing to this decline are increasing labour costs, the price ratio between groundnuts and maize, and the high capital costs of mechanising groundnut cultivation. Groundnut plantings declined drastically from the 4/5 production season after the 5/6 production season. The hectares planted decreased by about 56% from 58 ha in 4/5 to 6 ha in 5/6. dropped from 6 tons to 6 ton tons. This is a decline of,5%. These are the lowest planting and production figures for groundnuts recorded since the 999/ production season. The drought also had a significant negative effect on groundnut production during the 5/6 season. Soybeans In the past few years soybean production in South Africa showed a considerable rising trend and the hectares planted and production kan word. The yields also showed a rising trend over this period. The area planted, total production and yields are shown in Graph 7. The total hectares planted, as well as the total production, decreased from the 4/5 production season to the 5/6 production season. In the 4/5 production season season South Africa documented record production levels for soybeans. That was the first time in history that South Africa produced more than tons of soybeans. The total hectares planted in the 5/6 production season dropped by about 6,7% from 687 ha in 4/5 to 5 8 in 5/6. According to the CEC s final crop estimate figures, production also dropped from 7 tons in the 4/5 production season to tons in the 5/6 season. The average yield declined and the yield of,475 was lower than the,557 of the previous season, as well as than the long-term average of,5. Dry beans Like most of the other crops, the planting of dry beans was under pressure in the 5/6 season. The total hectares planted dropped from 64 ha in the 4/5 production season to 4 4 ha in the 5/6 production season. This was a year-on-year decline of 86%. The production also dropped by roughly 7% from 7 9 tons in 4/5 to tons in 5/6. This was the second lowest production in South Africa over the past 6 years. The average yield also declined considerably, and the yield of,9 was lower than the,47 of the previous season, as well as than the long-term average of,4. Graph 8 shows the area planted, the production and the average yield of dry beans in South Africa from 99/99 to 5/6. Wheat Wheat plantings for the 6/7 production season stand at 58 5 hectares. This is more than the 48 5 hectares of the previous season. It represents an increase of approximately 5,4% compared to the 5/6 production season. According to the CEC s second crop estimate for the season the expected wheat production for the 6/7 production season is 7 9 tons. This is roughly 8% more than the 44 tons of the 5/6 production season. Although the area planted over the past 7 has decreased, the yield has increased. The expected average yield for the 6/7 season is,5. This is higher than the, of the previous season, and also higher than the long-term average of,48. The area planted, production and average yield of wheat from the 99/99 production season up to the estimated values of the 6/7 season are shown in Graph 9. as die produksie, het drasties toegeneem. Droëbone Die aanplanting van droëbone was, soos die meeste van die ander gewasse in die 5/6-seisoen, onder druk. Die totale hektare aangeplant het vanaf 64 ha in die 4/5-produksieseisoen na 4 4 ha in die 5/6-produksieseisoen gedaal. Dit is n jaar op jaar-afname van 86%. Die produksie het ook met ongeveer 7% vanaf 7 9 ton in 4/5 na ton in 5/6 gedaal. Dit is die tweede laagste produksie in Suid-Afrika oor die afgelope 6 jaar. Die gemiddelde opbrengs het ook aansienlik gedaal en die gemiddelde opbrengs van,9 is laer as die,47 van verlede seisoen, asook die,4 -langtermyngemiddeld. 6 Malt barley According to the CEC s second production estimate for the 6/7 production season, hectares of malt barley have been planted. This is about 5,68% less than the 9 7 hectares of the 5/6 production season. The production for the season is estimated at tons in the CEC s second production estimate. This is,86% less than the previous season. The area planted has remained relatively constant from the / season until the 6/7 season. No major changes in the area planted have been observed. However, the total production has shown a rising trend with yields having improved over the past few years. The expected yield for the 6/7 production season is,9. This is lower than the,54 of the previous season, but higher than the long-term average of,86. The area planted, production and average yield from / to 6/7 are shown in Graph. Dit is laer as die,54 van verlede seisoen, maar hoër as die langtermyngemiddeld van,86. The area planted, as well as the production, showed a rising trend in this period, although it was under pressure again during the past three seasons due to the area planted and production dropping. According to the CEC s second production estimate for the 6/7 production season, the hectares planted are estimated at hectares. This is about 4,65% less than the 78 5 hectares of the 5/6 production season. This also indicates that the yields expected for the 6/7 production season should be higher. The better yields can be attributed to favourable weather conditions in the Western Cape during the growing season of the 6/7 production season. The expected yield of,5 is higher than the,5 of the previous season and also higher than the long-term average of,. CROP ESTIMATES COMMITTEE The National Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) has constantly proven itself to be credible over the years by making good and accurate estimates. In order to increase the credibility and transparency of the CEC, they are releasing additional yield information. The yield per magisterial district for the respective provinces is shown in Tables to. This yield information was obtained from a sample of producers of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The yields in red indicate that higher yields were harvested in that particular district during the 5/6 production season than in the previous season. Table shows among other things that the Free State was under pressure in the past production season due to the drought. In the Boshof and Brandfort areas there were no plantings in the sample areas, while only % of the sample area in the Hoopstad district was planted in 5/6 most of which was under irrigation. OESSKATTINGSKOMITEE Die Nasionale Oesskattingskomitee (NOK) het hulself al deurlopend oor die jare as geloofwaardig bewys deur goeie en akkurate skattings te maak. Ten einde die geloofwaardigheid en deursigtigheid van die NOK te verhoog, word daar addisionele opbrengsinligting deur hulle vrygestel. Die opbrengs per landdrosdistrik vir die onderskeie provinsies word in Tabel tot getoon. Hierdie opbrengsinligting is vanaf n steekproef van produsente van die Departement van Landbou, Bosbou en Visserye verkry. Die opbrengste wat in rooi aangedui is, dui daarop dat daar gedurende die 5/6-produksieseisoen hoër opbrengste vergeleke met die vorige seisoen in daardie spesifieke distrik voorgekom het. Tabel toon onder andere dat die Vrystaat die afgelope produksieseisoen onder druk was as gevolg van die droogte. In die Boshof- en Brandfortareas was daar geen aanplantings in die steekproefareas nie, terwyl slegs % van die steekproefarea in die Hoopstad-distrik in 5/6 beplant is waarvan die meeste onder besproeiing was. U word aangemoedig om, indien u nie alreeds aan die oesskatting deelneem nie, asseblief die vraelyste wat aan u gestuur word, te voltooi.
