2 Refer to the document Framework for Drafting Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Content of Document Legal Component ie. legal compliance Criterion 1.1 & 1.2 ( pg 7 ) 12 criteria Technical Component i.e. 4 parts 1. Economic sustainability ( ) pg 8-9 / Dr Corley 2. Soil & Water ( ) pg 9-10 / Dr Kee 3. Pest control ( ) pg 11 / Dr Asril 4. Nursery mgt & planting material ( ) pg 12 / Jean-Charles 1. Legal compliance Legal Component Criterion 1.1 There is compliance with all applicable local, national and international laws and regulations Criterion 1.2 The right to use the land can be demonstrated and does not diminish the legal or customary rights of other users CWG No-producers Suggestion : Breaking up to 3 criteria 1. Legal compliance Criterion 1.1 There is compliance with all applicable local, national and ratified international laws and regulations Criterion 1.2 The right to use the land can be demonstrated Criterion 1.3 The right to use the land does not diminish??? ( to be compensated ) the legal or customary rights of other users Issues: Inventory of all laws, different producer countries, smallholders, compliance 2

3 Technical Component : Economic Sustainability 2. Economic sustainability Lead: Dr Hereward Corley ( UK ) Criterion 2.1 Management planning aims at long-term financial and economic viability for plantations and mills Criterion 2.2 High productivity and quality of produce is achieved on planted land through appropriate agronomic and management practices Criterion 2.3 Plantation and mill operating procedures are appropriately documented CWG s Suggestion From guidance 2. Economic sustainability Criterion 2.1 Financial plans should take into account the need for continual improvement in productivity, economic, environmental and social performance Criterion 2.2 Optimal yield productivity and quality of produce is achieved on planted land through best practices *********** Smallholders!!! Criterion 2.3 Plantation and mill operating procedures are documented and followed through consistently Auditing? Inflation came in!!! Project disrupted, loans???? 3. Soil and water Technical Component : Soil and Water Lead: Dr Kee Khan Kiang (Malaysia) Criterion 3.1 Practices must be adequate to maintain, and if appropriate, improve, long-term soil fertility Criterion 3.2 Practices must be adequate to minimise and control erosion Criterion 3.3 Practices must be adequate to maintain the quality and quantity of fresh water 3. Soil and water Criterion 3.1 Practices must be adequate to maintain and if appropriate, improve soil fertility ( Note : smallholders intercropping practices causing erosion ) Cost? Criterion 3.2 Practices must be adequate to minimise the degree??? of soil erosion and degradation Criterion 3.3 Practices must be adequate to maintain the quality and quantity??? of surface and ground water that might be affected by plantation and mills ( efficiency of use /renewability??? source ) 3

4 4. Pest control Technical Component : Pest control Lead : Dr Asril Darussamin (Indonesia) Criterion 4.1 Pests, diseases and weeds are effectively managed whilst pesticide use is minimised Criterion 4.2 Herbicides and pesticides in WHO classes 1A and 1B or banned by national legislation shall not be used and any other herbicides and pesticides should be used in a way that minimises health and environmental risks 4. Pest & disease control Criterion 4.1 Pests, diseases and weeds are effectively managed whilst pesticide use is minimised integrated pest mgt/ invasive introduced species???? Criterion 4.2 Any pesticides should be used in a way that minimises safety, health and environmental risks and pesticides should not be used if banned by national legislation Note : Quantification of word minimise -> use as per label instructions Technical: Nursery management and planting material Lead : Jean-Charles Jacquemard (Indonesia) 5. Nursery management and planting material Criterion 5.1 Planting material should be of the highest quality available Criterion 5.2 Nurseries should avoid the use of forest topsoil, be sustainable in water-use and minimise chemical control of pests and diseases CWG propose moving these criteria as guidance under Criteria 2.2 i.e. best practices -> > BMP, GAP etc. 5. Nursery management and planting material Criterion 5.1 Planting material should be of the highest quality available (??? diversity/monocrop ) Criterion 5.2 Nurseries should avoid the use of forest topsoil, be sustainable in???? water-use and minimise chemical control of pests and diseases -> under P&D earlier 4

5 ON A LIGHTER NOTE : FOOD-FOR-THOUGHT Apparently, a survey was conducted by the U.N. worldwide. The only question asked was : "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world" The survey was a failure. WHY? 1. In Africa, many did not know what "food" meant. 2. In Western Europe, many did not know what "shortage" meant. 3. In Eastern Europe, many did not know what "opinion" opinion" " meant. 4. In the Middle East, many did not know what "solutions" solutions" " meant. 5. In South America, many did not know what "please" please" " meant. 6. In Asia, many did not know what "honesty" honesty" " meant. 7. And in the USA, many did not know what "the" rest of the world" " meant. Striving towards a more level playing field on planet Earth 5
