The rice plnts of Nipponre, Jpnese rice cultivr, were grown in PVC rootox (25 cm 2 cm 4 cm, L W H) under vinyl house. There were three moisture tretments: continuously wterlogged (CWL) condition nd two wter deficit (WD) conditions s 25% w/w nd 2% w/w. The N fertilizer (ure: 46%N) ws pplied t three different levels: 3, 6 nd 12 mg N rootox -1. Ech level of N fertilizer ws thoroughly mixed with 8 mg phosphorus, 7 mg potssium nd 2.5 kg ir-dried soil per rootox prior to seed sowing. The otined results showed tht incresing the N level from 3 to 6 mg N rootox -1 incresed root system development (s totl root length, nodl root numer, nodl root length, nd lterl root length), wter use, nd shoot dry weight of Nippore under WD conditions (t oth 25 nd 2% w/w of soil moisture content (SMC)), ut there ws no significnt difference in the ove trits etween the 6 to 12 mg N rootox -1 tretments. Under CWL conditions, however, the ove root trits incresed significntly fter incresing the N ppliction from 3 to 12 mg N rootox -1, which led to n increse in wter use, nd eventully significnt increse in dry mtter production. Furthermore, incresing the N ppliction levels incresed wter use through incresed totl root length, which led to the positive nd notly significnt correltion etween the totl root length nd wter use under oth CWL nd WD conditions.
