4 Preface Professor Chander Parkash Malik-the doyen of plant biology in India, a scholar who is the architect of a major restructuring of plant researching in this country. This includes histoenzymology, Cell biology, Cytogenetics, chemical embryology and now molecular biology especially, use of molecular markers in understanding genetic divergence in various crop plant species. He is founder of Botany Department at, Ludhiana and headed the same for more than two decades. He built a strong school of plant Reproductive biology and Crop Productivity. He was elected to the Fellowships of several Academies including Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. He is also recipient of several coveted national and International awards including Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Prize by ICAR, Bir Bal Sawhney Gold Medal, J.J.Chinoy Gold Medal. He was also President Indian Science Congress ( Plant Sciences), and President International Society of Plant Morphology. I had the unique pleasure to work with him closely on several occasions especially after he joined SADTM, now Jaipur National University, Jaipur. As President of Indian Botanical Society we discussed, shared and proposed several novel ideas to promote plant sciences. He is full of devotion, diligence and insurmountable energy to acquire latest knowledge on different aspects of biotechnology. A perusal of various titles comprising this volume shows that they cover biodrainage, carbon and nitrogen assimilation and dynamics in productivity, cadmium uptake. And future concern for health, The present volume Plant, Environm ent and Sustainability is compiled in his honor and. recounts his contributions in the varied fields of plant biology especially stress physiology- a tribute to his wide academic contributions. Mixed with feelings of honor, affection and great satisfaction, this volume is dedicated to him. I admire him because he knows clearly what he wants out of life, and what he wishes to accomplish.. Well versed in instrumental music, he perhaps enhances the intensity of his consciousness of life in him! A perusal of various titles comprising this volume shows that they cover photoreceptors for flowering, antioxidant efficacy, role of phytoalexins, ABC transporters, Prospects of herbal medicine, mitigation of green house gases, fluoride pollution in India, scientific methods of research, flowering, plant growth regulators, molecular mechanism (s) of drought tolerance, electrophysiology of

5 trapping mechanisms in carnivorous plants, etc. The twenty articles cover wide varieties of topics. The topics are bound to enthuse the readers and create eagerness to dwell into new information and insights, especially with the speed of new discoveries being made regularly. I thank all the contributors for their outstanding outputs. P C Trivedi
