1 SECTOR - Livestock Australia is a big exporter of livestock and livestock products such as meat, wool and sheepskins. A variety of livestock is produced including cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry as well as deer, alpacas and native livestock - crocodiles and kangaroos. The livestock sector is going through an exciting phase with technological changes meeting demands around the world for product quality and safety. New ideas and products have greatly affected the day-to-day management of livestock. JOB AREA - Beef Production If you enjoy working outdoors with large animals and machinery, then a career in the beef sector may interest you. Beef is one of Australia's largest rural exports reaching several billion dollars per year. Success in the sector requires a broad range of skills including the management of cattle, property, people and finances. Opportunities exist in gene technology, embryo transfer and artificial insemination as the sector aims to meet select export and domestic market standards. Wool harvesting involves the shearing of sheep and preparing wool for sale. You could be working in regional and remote areas of Australia and there are very good financial returns for top shearers. With around 5000 shearers and a similar number of wool handlers and crutchers needed each year, it is estimated that over 1000 new staff are required annually, as well as new woolclassers to prepare the clip for sale. The main occupations in the wool harvesting sector are wool handler, shed hand (or roustabout), shearer and woolclasser.

Chicken meat production is a complex and technologically advanced system seeking continual improvement in genetic material and nutrition and husbandry techniques. Today's poultry are the product of complex, scientifically based programs aimed at producing more meat or eggs while consuming less feed. The sector needs competent and skilled people including poultry hands, hatchery attendants and chicken sexers. Supervisors and managers are required to run egg farms, hatcheries, broiler farms and "contract growing" establishments. Next Step An Australian Apprenticeship, which includes both apprenticeships and traineeships, is a great way to start your career. At the completion of your apprenticeship or traineeship you ll receive an industry qualification that is recognised throughout Australia. You can often start vocational education and training courses (VET) at school or possibly do a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
