The AGP-LMD project addresses USAID's Strategic Objective of improving smallholder incomes and nutritional status through the achievement of three key USAID intermediate results. IR1: Increase productivity and competitiveness of selected livestock value chains. IR2: Improve the enabling environment for livestock value chains. IR3: Improve the quality and diversity of household diet through intake of livestock products.

Integrated into these components are the cross-cutting objectives of engaging people living with HIV/AIDS, gender equity, promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions, environmental mitigation, and natural resource management. AGP-LMD is working on Dairy and Meat and Live animal middle Value chains.

Key themes for driving the AGP-LMD Project approach include: Market development; Increased productivity and efficiency throughout the livestock value chain; Private sector focus and investment; Smallholder impact; Gender Equity Environmental conservation ICT

AGP-LMD approach for gender equity is based on the findings of gender analysis during inception period. The findings were women are mostly engaged in production and taking care of animals. They have limited participation in livestock marketing. Limited access, control and benefits of resources. To Bring Gender Equity LMD Designed: A. Mainstreaming gender in all value chain activities; B. Women s empowerment.

Why it is important to mainstream gender and work on women empowerment for AGP-LMD Project?

Livestock plays a critical role in farming systems, nutrition and as a ladder for asset accumulation. Both men and women are involved in livestock sector in different ways. The constraints facing both are different based on their roles. Women play significant role in downstream livestock V/C including feeding, watering, cleaning and milking cows. Men play mostly in upstream V/C such as marketing (buying and selling)

Men s heavy involvement in the upstream v/c has given them an advantage to control and access sales revenues. While women s role being mostly on the downstream v/c undermines their ability to spend more resources for improved productivity.

A focus on gender equity can increase the productivity of agriculture and livestock systems, and improve food security and nutrition. Improving smallholders income and nutritional status is the project objective.

What are the activities of AGP-LMD to bring Gender Equity : Give Gender mainstreaming training to V/C Managers, other staff, IPs and to beneficiaries to make them aware on gender issues.
